The Lords Commissioner for Standards today confirmed that the Tory peer is being investigated over his 'use of facilities' in relation to Gina Coladangelo.

Mr Hancock's embrace with the former adviser ultimately cost him his Government job after it was revealed the pair breached social distancing rules.

Ms Coladangelo, a long-term friend of Mr Hancock, was brought into the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) first as an unpaid adviser before getting a £15,000-a-year director role in September.

Members of the House of Lords can sponsor passes for secretaries and research assistants if they 'genuinely and personally' fulfil those roles for the sponsoring member.

The sponsor has to sign a declaration to that effect, and it would be against the rules if the individual did not work for the peer.

A House of Lords spokesman said: 'The Commissioner for Standards is investigating a complaint regarding Lord Bethell sponsoring a pass for Gina Coladangelo.'

Passholders have free access to the Palace of Westminster, where they can mingle with ministers and MPs and use the estate's facilities such as bars and restaurants.

Mr Hancock announced he was stepping down as health secretary on Saturday June 26.

He quit following the leaking of video footage showing him breaking social distancing rules by kissing Ms Coladangelo in his ministerial office.

Sajid Javid was appointed by Boris Johnson as Mr Hancock's replacement at the Department of Health and Social Care.

Russia is ready to respond 'harshly & decisively' to any future US power plays, country's foreign minister Lavrov warns Washington

Moscow’s most senior diplomat has said that his country will not allow the US to dictate negotiations and relations from an unequal position of power, insisting that it would view any such attempts as an escalation of hostilities.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “has made it clear, including publicly, that achieving results is only possible through finding a mutually acceptable balance of interests on a strictly equal basis.”

Despite constructive talks between Putin and his American counterpart, Joe Biden, in Geneva last month, Lavrov said that Washington’s officials had made a return to “lecturing” the Kremlin. This included a warning that the country could soon face more sanctions if it does not accept “the rules of the game” set out by US envoys in Geneva, he said.

“Attempts to conduct dialogue with us from a position of strength are doomed to fail,” the foreign minister blasted. “We will respond harshly and decisively to unfriendly actions.”

In March, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized American officials for what he saw as attempts to deal with the country in a confrontational and superior manner. “The Americans are now repeating like a mantra the idea that they will speak with everyone from a position of power,” the spokesman added. “Neither Putin, nor anyone else from the Russian administration, will allow the US or other nations to talk to us like that – it’s out of the question,” Peskov said.

The summit between the two world leaders was broadly hailed as a success, and Putin said that it was civil in tone and he “didn’t think there was any kind of hostility” behind negotiations. Lavrov added that the main outcome had been “modest, but a step towards the resumption of normal relations.”

In 2014, as relations between the two countries frayed in the face of Russia’s reabsorption of the Сrimean peninsula, the president forewarned that “talking to Russia from a position of strength is meaningless,” slamming sanctions and international condemnation over the development. According to him, “Every time somebody believes Russia is becoming too powerful and independent, such instruments are turned on immediately,” said Putin.

Legal Expert Warns of Coming 'Canadian Ministry of Truth, a Modern Inquisition'

Last month, Canada’s Liberal Party headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau proposed legislation to criminalize “hate speech” online, punishable by a $50,000 (roughly $40,000 U.S.D.) paid to the government. A former Crown prosecutor and lawyer who has appeared at every level of court throughout Canada raised an alarm about the new bill, telling PJ Media that it would undermine Canadians’ rights and punish “independent thought.”

“Bill C-36 is calculated to punish legal independent thought and crush it out wherever it finds it using punitive fines and imprisonment,” Jay Cameron, litigation director at the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, told PJ Media. “Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault clearly aspires to be the director of the new Canadian Ministry of Truth, a modern Inquisition where every social media post is scrutinized by spying bureaucrats with the power to censor and punish Canadians until they submit.”

“The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is specifically intended to protect individual Canadians from legislation like Bill C-36. Section 2(b) protects freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression specifically because there will always be tyrants who gain government power and then abuse it by attempting to compel citizens to think and speak in accordance with orthodox diktat,” Cameron argued (emphasis original).

Bill C-36 would enable citizens to bring legal claims against people who engage in “hate speech” online, and if a member or panel of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal finds the accused guilty, the tribunal can either order the accused to “cease the discriminatory practice” and take steps to prevent it from happening again; order the accused to pay compensation of up to $20,000 “to any victim personally identified in the communication that constituted the discriminatory practice”; or order the accused to “pay a penalty of not more than $50,000 to the Receiver General” if the tribunal “considers it appropriate” considering “the nature, circumstances, extent and gravity of the discriminatory practice.”

The “Canadian Human Rights Tribunal” seems similar to bodies like the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which discriminated against Christian baker Jack Phillips. Phillips refused to bake a custom cake celebrating a same-sex wedding, and the commission found him guilty of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, even though the same commission defended another baker’s right to refuse to create cakes that stated a message with which she disagreed.

“The Liberal Party’s crusade against ‘hate’ is in reality a crusade against disagreement and dissent,” Cameron argued. “It is not ‘hate’ to have one’s own personal opinions on politics, religion, sexuality, gender, lockdowns, or any other subject, which is why there are few prosecutions in Canada for ‘hate speech.'”

“Dissent, debate, and disagreement are the nutrients of a free society,” the litigation director insisted. “The protection for free speech in the Constitution is a result of hundreds of years of oppression and resistance to the cruel rule of historical tyrants.”
