Likely referring to fencing "en garde" or on your guard before a fencing duel.

In reference to chess, 50 years ago in NYC matches we would announce "Queen check" as a courtesy to let the adversary know his Queen was being attacked. Ditto if the opponent mistakenly (?) put his Queen in check.
