“Durban riots latest: Watch SANDF confirms deployment to support police”- https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/breaking-durban-riots-latest-watch-sandf-confirms-deployment-to-support-police/

The SANDF has confirmed that troops have been deployed to KwaZulu-Natal to support the police in their battle against violent looters.

The SA National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that it has deployed soldiers to support the police to quell the violent looting that has lashed KwaZulu-Natal over the past 24 hours.

SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi said in response to the South African’s questions regarding whether troops were being deployed to quell the violent looting, that a request had been received.

He further confirmed that SANDF troops have been deployed to the province.

“I can confirm that members of the SANDF have been deployed in support of the SAPS,” Mgobozi said.

Watch a video of SANDF troops that has been circulated on social media on Monday. The video was purportedly taken in Pietermaritzburg.

“The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has commenced with pre-deployment processes and procedures in line with a request for assistance received from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) to assist law enforcement agencies deployed in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal Provinces respectively to quell the unrest that has gripped both Provinces in the last few days. The deployment will commence as soon as all deployment processes are `in place,” the SANDF said in a statement.

“The duration and number of deploying soldiers will be determined based on the assessment of the situation on the ground by the relevant law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, it must be emphasised that the SANDF’s deployment objective is to provide safety and a safe working environment for members of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies whilst they carry out their constitutionally mandated law and order duties. SANDF deployment-related information updates will follow in due course,” the SANDF said

The SANDF’s confirmation of the deployment followed unabated incidents of looting and burning of businesses. Spar supermarkets and bottle stores across Durban appeared to be a most frequent target of the violent looters who could be seen laughing as they ran with their arms full of stolen goods.

Durban residents awoke to a stream of reports of violent looting across the city that had continued throughout the night into the early hours of the morning. Looters continued their rampage after sunrise, looting a Spar in Berea Road and descending on Glenwood Village Spar and Davenport Centre. Several bottle stores including Fourways Spar Tops in Pinetown were also raided. Security companies were out assisting police to keep looters at bay in Waterfall and videos of residents fighting back against the looters also went viral.

The South African had asked Mgobozi to confirm whether a WhatsApp message that has been circulating on Monday was in fact true or not and whether troops were being deployed.

The message was purportedly from a Spar retail manager advising their stores.

The message read: “SPAR KZN: Urgent Retail Communication!!

Government have officially deployed the SANDF to KZN to attempt to get matters under control. We as the SPAR Group are continuing to engage with Government. Take care, hang in & be safe!”

Mgobozi responding saying only: “I can confirm that a request has been received.”

Social media groups and residents reported that helicopters could be heard circulating in the Pinetown and Waterfall area on Monday morning.

“‘They can’t kill us all’: Malema urges EFF to join riots as SANDF deployed”- https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/kzn-gauteng-riots-protests-zuma-eff-julius-malema-latest-news-breaking-monday-12-july/

EFF Leader Malema said that the chaos unfolding in KZN and Gauteng on Monday should be resolved through engagement rather than soldiers.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has warned that should the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) be deployed to support police as they battle against protesters in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, his party will involve themselves against government.

The EFF condemned “incompetent and useless” President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday, saying that he has failed to handle the situation that has led to widespread violence and looting after supporters of incarcerated former President Jacob Zuma began rioting over the weekend.

MALEMA CONDEMNS SANDF DEPLOYMENT

In a tweet sent out at lunchtime on Sunday after it was confirmed that the SANDF will be deployed to Gauteng and KZN to support the South African Police Service (SAPS), Malema directed EFF supporters to “be ready” to assist rioters.

“No soldiers on our streets! Otherwise, we are joining. All fighters must be ready… they won’t kill us all. We need a political solution to a political problem, not soldiers,” he said.

In a statement released earlier in the day, the EFF said that the distressing scenes unfolding around the country on Monday are the result of the ruling party having failed to

The EFF has observed the complete incompetence and uselessness of Matamela Ramaphosa, in handling the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread uprisings that have resulted in violence and looting in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng stem from “factional warfare within the political party, and have now turned into rolling mass-actions by thousands of poor South Africans”.

“At no single moment has he attempted to engage the masses of people he purports to lead within his own political party and the people he claims to be a President of,” they said.

“Instead, he continues with his dictatorial tendencies, of adjusting when South Africans can sleep, suppressing political dissent and running the country behind a television screen.”

RAMAPHOSA URGED TO ENGAGE WITH RIOTERS

The EFF called for Ramaphosa and his government to take a different approach to resolving the violence, saying that he should engage with the protesters instead of deploying the SANDF.

“We call for the leadership of the country to engage in peace-making efforts in Kwa-Zulu Natal primarily,” they said.

“The situation in Kwa-Zulu Natal requires stakeholder engagements at a ground-level, not self-centred addresses on television where no questions are allowed.”

“Without this, the country must expect protests to spread and continue, as the hunger of our people will not disappear because of empty condemnations from individuals who are detached from reality.”

“Retail losses mount, risks of food scarcity” - https://youtu.be/tumBXEiEpfs. Most, if not all, truck companies have also stopped delivering goods.

“South Africa’s top companies, including Vodacom and MTN, shut shops amidst riots”- https://mybroadband.co.za/news/business/405764-south-africas-top-companies-including-vodacom-and-mtn-shut-shops-amidst-riots.html

South Africa’s largest companies were among those forced to halt operations as some of the worst protests since the end of white minority rule erupted in parts of the country, with rioters torching trucks and looting stores.

The nation’s biggest four lenders led by Standard Bank Group Ltd. and FirstRand Ltd. all closed branches in KwaZulu-Natal, the province at the heart of the violent unrest, and the economic hub of Gauteng, the companies said in emailed responses to questions Monday.

Walmart Inc.-owned Massmart Holdings Ltd. and mobile-phone giants Vodacom Group Ltd. and MTN Group Ltd. were among others to shutter outlets, while the latter is running its main call center at minimal capacity.

Dis-Chem Pharmacies Ltd. closed all its drugstores in KwaZulu-Natal, hampering South Africa’s Covid-19 testing and vaccine rollout, according to text messages sent to customers.

Smaller shops across downtown Johannesburg closed as looters roamed the streets, while the affluent Rosebank Mall near the city’s financial hub of Sandton shut early as a precaution.

Business leaders are calling on authorities to quell the violence that has escalated since the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma last week, with the army being deployed to help police.

The looting and destruction have emptied the shelves of grocers and closed major roads in the country, including the N3 highway between the port city of Durban and Johannesburg. At least six people have died to date, according to police.

“We are doing all we can to ensure that the disruptions are minimized,” Trudi Makhaya, an economic adviser to President Cyril Ramaphosa, said in webinar organized by the World Bank. “Of course, that begins with arresting criminals, intervening in those hotspots where we’re seeing challenges.”

The impact of the riots has delivered a further blow to industries already contending with lockdown restrictions in South Africa to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections, which were toughened late last month to combat a third wave. It’s also hampering efforts to revive an economy that suffered its largest contraction in a century last year.

South African stocks pared losses as investors kept a close eye on the protests, while the extension of the current hard level of lockdown weighed on sentiment.

The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index was up 0.7% by 3:51 p.m., erasing earlier losses of as much as 0.7%, though the FTSE/JSE Retailers Index fell 1.4%.

“There is definitely a more somber mood on the JSE today,” said Michele Santangelo of Independent Securities in Johannesburg.

“South Africa-centric shares are mostly under pressure today as is the rand. Investors are likely not overly concerned given the recent events but they are certainly not overly optimistic either,” he said.

“LIVE President Cyril Ramaphosa & Boerelegioen's General Izak van Zyl makes public announcements.”- https://youtu.be/n8z2P5C2FH0

32:12 – “I really observe a hidden agenda and depending on what Cyril Ramaphosa is going to state tonight will guide us in taking proper decisions for the few weeks to come.”

36:04 – “So my prediction is that this is the start of the real revolution in South Africa and that if Ramaphosa doesn’t kill the revolution within 48 hours from now on, we are going to see them gaining momentum and that will become the new normal in South Africa for the next few weeks until there is nothing left and then we will be in a state of total anarchy where there is no government anymore, where there is no law anymore, where there is no law enforcement anymore and we are then in a position to restore law and order”

Concerning his response concerning Ramaphosa as a leader;

42:41 – “I know Ramaphosa from the days he was still in labour organisations, COSATU. I was a very young police officer and I know the militant way and the very harsh way he dealt with negotiations pre 1994. To such an extent that South Africa Police Service at one stage about 3 000 of his people/followers at kanana at one of the gold mines near Klerksdorp, Stilfontein, and that caused a huge outcry from his side because he blamed the police for police brutality and all this stuff. That was almost the mid phase in the 80s when the struggle was almost at a high point. Where the images of the so called police brutality was sent internationally. The picture was painted that the police was the instrument of the Apartheid’s government to bully the black people and that was really not the case as I was a part of Apartheid’s police at that stage… never ever when I can remember I was in the situation where we had to use excessive force to arrest people… To the contrary, I saw many instances in the past 5-6 years where police used extreme force, more extreme force we have used in the 80s to control crowds… The time period from where you as a commander of a riot unit instructed the crowd to disperse until you actually act, was a very short space of time. What we see these days, is that the crowd already gained momentum and even finished their looting and breaking down or burning down the buildings, then the police try to come in and stop it. That is an unacceptable way of controlling crowds.”

50:18 – “It’s just anarchy, Izak. It’s pure anarchy.”… “That is because the leaderships in this country are also part of it. I think it is very difficult for a man like Cyril Ramaphosa who is himself guilty of lots of crimes and corruption in the past. That is allegations that surfaces the last few months to quite a huge extent. Is that it is very difficult for a criminal to police a criminal. That’s also in the days of Zuma, it is very difficult for a criminal to control other criminals.”

51:27 – “It is the same that is currently going on in… many parts of South America with the drug trafficking and human trafficking. The leaders of the countries are actually the criminals who are dealing with this stuff.”

58:38 – “We have to follow the agenda of this whole protest action and that‘s why I said in the beginning of this interview that the agenda of this protest action is not to go into white neighbourhoods to kill all the whites. The agenda is purely faction fight between the Zulus part of the ANC and the Ramaphosa part of the ANC. That is the part where we say that we will not get involved there.”

1:37:40 “Messages I heard sounded to me like it comes from one of the Zuma family where he said that they will not focus on black townships, they will focus on white monopoly capital, they will burn down everything owned by white people. That is enough evidence to prove that there is a coordinated leadership that are sitting behind the violence that we are seeing… What we saw in the last 2 days is nothing else than domestic terrorism. The instigation of the violence, the committing of the violence is nothing else than terrorism… I want to almost use the word acts of war because there was instances where automatic weapons was used… and fire arms… against the police.”

“Kenya arrests ‘bloodthirsty vampire’ over child killings”- https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/africa/kenya-arrests-bloodthirsty-vampire-over-child-killings/

The 20-year-old took officers to the site where he had dumped the bodies in nairobi and confessed to the cold-blooded killing of children.

Kenyan police were on Thursday holding a man described as a “bloodthirsty vampire” accused of the grisly murders of at least 10 children.

Masten Milimo Wanjala was arrested on Wednesday over the disappearance of two children but in a chilling confession, admitted to killing many more, police said.

The 20-year-old took officers to the site where he had dumped their bodies in a forested area of the capital, and confessed to the cold-blooded killing of at least 10 young teenagers, they said.

Police described his arrest as a major breakthrough in an investigation into a spate of disturbing child disappearances in Kenya — almost two a day in recent weeks, according to police data.

‘VAMPIRE’ KILLER IN CUSTODY FOR 30 DAYS

“Wanjala single-handedly massacred his victims in the most callous manner, sometimes through sucking blood from their veins before executing them,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Twitter late Wednesday, describing him as a “bloodthirsty vampire”.

A Nairobi court ordered Thursday he be held in custody for 30 days to give police more time to investigate the case.

The murders, targeting 12- and 13-year-olds, stretch back five years. His victims were drugged and drained of their blood and some of them strangled, police said.

Such cases of kidnappings involving school-going children, some ending up dead, have become rife in recent months and sent parents panicking.

Wanjala’s arrest was splashed across Thursday’s front pages of the main newspapers in Kenya, with some publishing pictures of the suspect in a blood-stained football jersey.

INNOCENT CHILDREN, ‘LEFT TO ROT’

According to police, Wanjala’s first victim was a 12-year-old girl he kidnapped five years ago in Machakos county east of Nairobi.

The murder of his next victim in western Kenya sparked protests, with locals torching the house of the person they suspected killed the boy.

“In a nerve-wracking blow-by-blow account, the murderer recounted harrowing details of how he lured victims to his killer jaws before squeezing (the) dear life out of the innocent children,” the DCI said on Twitter.

“Unbeknownst to some of the worried families, their children were long executed by the beast and their remains dumped in thickets. Others were submerged in sewer lines in the city and left to rot away,” it added.

Police said he had demanded 30,000 Kenyan shillings (R4,036) from the parents of one teenage boy before killing him.

The bodies of several children feared to have died at Wanjala’s hands have yet to be found.

Wanjala was unapologetic over his actions and told detectives he derived “a lot pleasure” from killing his victims.

“‘There was a plot to remove our govt’ – ANC confirm insurrection claims”- https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/breaking-latest-news-is-there-insurrection-anc-south-africa/

Right-wing forces [their favourite scapegoat], a former top spy, and an ex-SANDF general have all been accused of plotting an 'insurrection' against the ANC this week.

There you have it. Deputy Minister for the State Security Agency, Zizi Kodwa, has told the media that the recent unrest across South Africa has been inspired by a genuine insurrection attempt – which was allegedly in the works way before former president and ex-ANC leader Jacob Zuma got himself sent to jail.

INSURRECTION CLAIMS CONFIRMED BY DEPUTY MINISTER

Kodwa said that there was a ‘big plot’ to topple the government, by shutting down major ports and food distribution lines. Those behind the riots have been largely successful, bringing the country to its knees this week. However, the prominent ANC representative believes that the masterminds of this chaos have also collaborated with ‘right-wing forces’.

“There was a big plot for domestic instability before Zuma was jailed. The plan was just to destroy everything else, there must be agitation and remove this government. To an extent, they wanted to destabilise the country and they also planned what is called in a right-wing language, a lone wolf must start racial tension and racial war in SA.”

“There was a clear orchestrated plan of economical sabotage, with right-wing elements. Part of targetting malls is part of agitating for what is called popular revolt so that people at the end of the day abuse and exploit their socio-economic conditions which at the end of the day, those who loot do not understand the bigger plan.” | Zizi Kodwa

SOUTH AFRICA RIOTS: WHO HAS BEEN INSTIGATING THIS?

Not everyone shares Kodwa’s point of view, however. Dianne Kohler Barnard is the Shadow SSA Minister, and she is openly wondering why blatant social media campaigns – which hinted at an insurrection – were not picked up by the country’s intelligence department. Kohler Barnard, meanwhile, suspects ex-spy Thulani Dlomo is one of the instigators:

“Any 10-year-old would have been able to show them the threatening leaflets flying over social media – giving dates and venues for various protests and looting days in advance. Yet, to quote the Minister of Defence, they were ‘caught with their pants down’. Specialised cybercrime units exist – but seemingly did nothing.

Was it an attempt at a coup? A name that has emerged time and again over the years, is back. He is former Ambassador to Japan Thulani Dlomo who went AWOL from the SSA for months after he was axed from the position. He is widely known as “Zuma’s personal spy”. He is one of the 12 names being bandied about as instigators of the insurrection.”

“Violent anarchy: you were WARNED | Frans Cronje”- https://youtu.be/G4_M8YDFzA0

David Ansara and Frans Cronje of the CRA examine the underlying causes of the violent anarchy engulfing South Africa, and assess the ability of the state to resolve the current crisis.

10:41 – “If those 2 events; the xenophobic pogroms and the national uprising can be avoided then this thing calms over the next week but it calms back to that same very high level of violent anarchic protest that I mentioned to you earlier. It doesn’t go back to peace. I mean the government speaking about a return to peace and law and order. There hasn’t been that in South Africa for a great many years and anyone lives in the country appreciates that. The only people that don’t are the members of the cabinet who are not aware of this. We then get back to that status quo which will in the absence of real reform be interspersed on regular occasions with the kinds of blow-ups that we’ve seen now and where that culminates takes you back to an old 2014 Center For Risk Analysis call that the ANC’s time in government in South Africa is reaching the end.”

“Over a million rounds of ammunition looted from Durban container” dated 16 July 2021 at https://www.defenceweb.co.za/land/land-land/over-a-million-rounds-of-ammunition-looted-from-durban-container/

More than 1.5 million rounds of ammunition have apparently been stolen during looting in Durban.

News24 reported that sources in law enforcement said the ammunition was imported from Brazil and looted from a container depot in Mobeni south of Durban.

“Sources with knowledge of the incident said that the bullets were stored in a container at a depot on Leicester Road in the Durban south basin – an industrial precinct which was overrun by looters during the week. The lion’s share remains missing,” News24 said.

It appears the looters had inside knowledge of the shipment, which was stored high off the ground.

While visiting police operations in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that 10 000 rounds of ammunition, thought to have originated from the container, were seized.

A shipping invoice which defenceWeb has seen, and which has not been verified as authentic, appeared to show that the ammunition was ordered in February this year by Centurion-based outdoor and sporting goods company Formalito, and supplied by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos, one of the world’s largest ammunition manufacturers.

According to the invoice, the container contained 800 000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, and several hundred thousand rounds of .38, .32, .44, .45, .357 and .40 calibre ammunition.

“SA riots: Probe launched after ‘1.5 million rounds of ammunition’ looted”dated 16 July 2021 at https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/ammunition-looted-durban-where-is-it-update-riots-friday-16-july/

That's A LOT of ammunition. The shadow police minister is demanding answers, after more than a million rounds of ammo were stolen during the KZN riots.

The DA has officially written directly to the National Police Commissioner, after it was reported that one-and-a-half million rounds of ammunition were looted from an industrial complex near Durban during the riots earlier this week.

WHERE HAVE 1.5 MILLION ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION GONE?

Kevin Mileham, the Shadow Minister for Police, has released a statement condemning the incident, and questioned why certain security details were changed for the looted container. The DA representative is far from satisfied…

“It’s understood that a container with more than 1.5 million rounds of ammunition was looted at the Mobeni industrial area near Durban. This took place on Wednesday evening and that sources have stated that the ammo, imported from Brazil, would have ordinarily been shipped to Cape Town. It is unclear why the weaponry had been shipped to Durban.”

“These allegations coincide with a report in the Mail & Guardian this morning claiming that the violent riots, looting, and burning of businesses and malls were simply the first stage of a larger concerted strategy to destabilise the country.”

RIOTS LATEST – MISSING AMMO CAUSING POLITICAL PANIC

Riots have brought large parts of the country to its knees: Gauteng has been badly affected, but KZN is the epicentre of looting and violence. Hundreds have been arrested, and thousands of businesses have been trashed completely.

The death toll is also a grim statistic. As of 16:00 on Friday 16 July, a total of 212 people have been killed as a direct result of these riots. For Mileham, however, he suspects that the looters in question had some help from ‘inside sources’. According to the opposition figure, there is likely to have been some ‘willful cooperation’ from SAPS officials.

“The DA is also of the view that it would have been impossible for this incident to occur without the willful cooperation from some within the South African Police Service (SAPS), who would have been involved in safeguarding this ammunition. A case has been opened and a team has been assembled to trace the missing ammo.” | Kevin Mileham

“Statistics show increase in violent crimes” – 1 April to 30 June 2021- https://youtu.be/aNBGa2a1pg4

“Over 5 000 people were murdered and over 10 000 raped in South Africa in the last quarter. The figures reflect startling increases in violent crimes like murder, sexual violence and hijackings. These contact crimes increased by 60,6% compared to the same period last year.”

“KwaZulu-Natal remains the murder capital of South Africa” - https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/kzn-crime-statistics-2021-murder-rate-police-station/

KwaZulu-Natal remains the murder capital of the country with 1404 people killed during the first quarter of 2021 according to the latest police crime statistics released on Friday.

Umlazi and Plessislaer police stations were again at the top of the list when it comes to murder cases reported while the Inanda SAPS reported the most cases of rape. A told of 1959 people were raped in KwaZulu-Natal during the three month period from April to June 2021.

DA member of the provincial legislature (MPL) and spokesperson on community safety and liaison Sharon Hoosen said that the crime statistics were an indictment against both the police and the government.

“When governance fails, criminals thrive and this, unfortunately, is the case in our province. The statistics see massive increases in criminal activity in comparison with the same period last year, with the Police Minister attempting to blame this on the fact that the country was in hard lockdown at the time,” Hoosen said.

“The fact remains that even before the pandemic, KZN’s crime levels were rising at an alarming rate. Every quarter, the people of KZN are promised reduced crime in their communities and a safer environment for women and children. Yet they remain empty promises as the top brass continue to fail to provide necessary resources to KZN’s 184 SAPS stations,” she said.
