What's going on in Japan?

"Japan's Meteorological Agency issued its strongest emergency warning for heavy rain on Saturday in the southwestern prefectures of Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Kumamoto. People are urged to protect their lives.

Officials say disasters could be imminent, or may already have occurred.

The officials say there is a risk of heavy damage from what they describe asonce-in-decades rainfall. They also call for utmost caution against swollen rivers and flooding in low-lying areas.

Landslide alert information has also been issued for the three prefectures.

Agency officials advise residents to monitor the situation outdoors. If it appears too dangerous to evacuate to a public shelter, they should move to a sturdy building nearby.

If stepping outdoors is too risky, residents should remain on second or higher floors of the building they are in – and in rooms furthest away from cliffs or slopes.

The downpours are the result of an active seasonal rain front. In Kagoshima, a band of rain clouds is raising the likelihood of potentially life-threatening landslides and flooding.

In the one hour through 5 a.m. on Saturday, Ebino City in Miyazaki observed 100 millimeters of rain. Isa City in Kagoshima had 92 millimeters, and Minamata in Kumamoto had 75 millimeters.

Some rivers in Kagoshima and Miyazaki are at risk of flooding.

The Kyushu region can expect continued heavy rain accompanied by lightning. There could be downpours of more than 50 millimeters per hour."
