Quinta Columna

From the Castilian quinta columna, expression of General Emilio Mola, who commanded the Northern Army during the Spanish War.

According to the English historian Hugh Thomas, during an interview with foreign journalists the general was asked which of the "four columns" that made up his army would conquer Madrid; to which Mola replied that the initiative would belong to the fifth column (quinta columna), with implicit reference to the pro-monarchist and Francoist groups that operated clandestinely in Madrid.

Thomas claims that these "imprudent words" provided the pretext for a long series of killings in the capital. According to other sources, Mola allegedly stated, during a radio broadcast in 1936: «We have four columns advancing on Madrid. The fifth column will rise at the right time "(in fact it may be the same episode handed down in two different versions).
