Same Oxford University scientists who developed Covid vaccine launch trial of a HIV jab on humans in bid to crush AIDS-causing virus

Thirteen HIV-negative Britons aged 18 to 65 who are deemed at low risk of infection will take part in the trials launched this week.

It comes on the back of Oxford's Covid vaccine success, which has seen a billion doses of the jab it developed with AstraZeneca sold worldwide so far. The jab has been instrumental in Britain's inoculation roll-out, helping protect more than 25million against the virus.

Participants in the trial, for the HIVconsvX vaccine, will receive an initial injection followed by a booster dose four weeks later.

Scientists will then take blood samples 11 times to monitor their immune response, and find out whether the vaccine is safe and can stop HIV infections.

It will also be tested in Kenya, Zambia and Uganda — where HIV is most widespread — on a small number of people.

Results from the Phase 1 trials are expected in April next year and, if successful, it will move into larger studies.

Like the Covid jab, the 'mosaic' vaccine will also use a common cold virus that has been modified so it does not cause illness.
