Intelligence agency busted for blatant Photoshop job on cover of diversity report

Hopefully, America’s spies are a little more stealthy.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) was roundly mocked on social media Thursday for using an image on the cover of its annual diversity report that was obviously Photoshopped.

The report, subtitled “Hiring and Retention of Minorities, Women, and Persons with Disabilities in the United States Intelligence Community,” featured a photo of smiling, diverse office staffers standing in a lobby, flanked by a woman in a wheelchair and a blind man with a seeing-eye dog.

The title of the image on stock photography company Shutterstock is: “Portrait Of Multi-Cultural Office Staff Standing In Lobby.”

But one glaring problem — which was first pointed out by Republican political consultant and podcaster Luke Thompson — is that the woman in the wheelchair and the blind man don’t appear in the original stock photo. They seem to have been Photoshopped into the image used on the ODNI report.

“Siri, show me the worst use of stock photos ever,” Thompson tweeted Thursday.

The Photoshopped image quickly gained more traction than the actual report, which noted that the percentage of minorities and people with disabilities among civilian intelligence community employees ticked up to 27 percent and 11.9 percent, respectively, in fiscal year 2020 (up from 26.5 percent and 11.5 percent respectively in fiscal year 2019). The percentage of female civilian intelligence community employees held steady at 39.3 percent.

SWAT teams responded to the Maven Hotel and Wazee Street was closed to the public as investigators combed the scene.One witness saw a car being loaded on a flatbed.Other witnesses said Denver Chief of Police Paul Pazen was one of the law enforcement officials investigating the scene at the hotel.

Police credit ‘astute employee’ for arrests at Denver hotel

Denver police officers initially responded to the Maven Hotel Friday for a report of a suspicious occurrence. After obtaining a search warrant, searching two rooms and impounding two vehicles, three men and a woman were arrested, police said in a news release. The arrests were made without incident, said Denver Police Chief Paul M. Pazen.

The individuals were identified as Richard Platt, 42; Gabriel Rodriguez, 48; Ricardo Rodriguez, 44; and Kanoelehua Serikawa, 43.

Platt was charged with investigation of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Platt also had a warrant from another jurisdiction, Denver police said in a news release.

Gabriel Rodriguez was charged with investigation of possession of a weapon by a previous offender and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Ricardo Rodriguez was charged with investigation of possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Serikawa was charged with investigation of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Serikawa also had a warrant from another jurisdiction, police said.

CNN has been unable to reach any of the individuals arrested and is trying to determine if they have legal representation.

Pazen said Sunday weapons and narcotics were recovered from the room, but no other information was available.

“We cannot definitively say what this situation is yet,” said Mayor Michael B. Hancock, adding that he does not want people speculating. “If we take away anything from this incident in our city is if you see something, say something.”

There have been no calls to the White House and no games have been postponed, Hancock said at a Sunday news conference.

Sage Hospitality, the operator of the Maven Hotel, released a statement saying it was “incredibly proud that our team swiftly alerted the authorities in this instance.”
