Cleveland is tied for the highest crime rate in the country. It is one of the most violent cities in America. Calling attention to the level of violence and demanding safety for our neighborhoods is not a scare tactic; it addresses facts. Those who say otherwise are ignoring the issues we face every day.
As Mayor, I plan to hire 400 additional police will build up the homicide unit, the scientific investigation unit, and the gang unit. We will employ 100 safety assistants with special skills to deal with nonviolent disturbances. Not every 9 1 1 call requires an armed response. We will attract quality applicants to law enforcement by providing college tuition for those who commit to five years of service in the Cleveland Police Department.
Most importantly, we will create a cabinet-level #CivicPeaceDepartment. The Civic Peace Department will identify trouble spots in the city, intervene before an outbreak of violence, and create new policies addressing safety, security, crime, and rehabilitation, and establish and coordinate new community-based violence prevention programs and conflict resolution strategies.
When we ignore our safety, progress in Education, Health, and Housing can not happen. Nothing will change until we take strides to make all of our neighborhoods safe again. Our Administration will take an all-encompassing, holistic approach to the economic and social challenges confronting all Clevelanders. People have said, again and again. I was ahead of my time.
