Smithfield Foods — the world’s largest pork processing company — will no longer slaughter animals or process pet food in the town where it was founded.

Smithfield Foods announced plans to end slaughtering operations at its Smithfield facility after the completion of a months-long internal review. The operations will be shifted to other Smithfield locations in the United States, according to a company statement. (Andrew Harrer)
Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork processing company, will no longer slaughter animals or process pet food in the town where it was founded.
The decisions come after a companywide internal review that lasted several months, Chief Administrative Officer Keira Lombardo said in an emailed statement.
The company will be spending $5 million to reconfigure the Smithfield facility to produce packaged meat like bacon, ham, and other pork products.
