Amid last week’s thunderstorm, between 100 and 200 lightning strikes were thought to have occurred, The Washington Post reported.
It's estimated thunderstorms like this in Alaska's far north areas only form once or twice every decade, it reported.
Summer lightning in the Arctic Circle has tripled since 2010, and this is believed to be linked to a loss of sea ice, a study in the Geophysical Research Letters found.
When the sea ice disappears, more water is able to evaporate which adds moisture to the warming atmosphere, the researchers said.
“It’s going to go with the temperatures,” The Independent reported study co-author Robert Holzworth, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Washington in Seattle, saying.
