China accused of cyber-attack on Microsoft Exchange servers

The UK, US and EU have accused China of carrying out a major cyber-attack earlier this year.

The attack targeted Microsoft Exchange servers, affecting at least 30,000 organisations globally.

Western security services believe it signals a shift from a targeted espionage campaign to a smash-and-grab raid, leading to concerns Chinese cyber-behaviour is escalating.

The Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) has also been accused of wider espionage activity and a broader pattern of "reckless" behaviour.

China has previously denied allegations of hacking and says it opposes all forms of cyber-crime.

The unified call-out of Beijing shows the gravity with which this case has been taken. Western intelligence officials say aspects are markedly more serious than anything they have seen before.

It began in January when hackers from a Chinese-linked group known as Hafnium began exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange. They used the vulnerability to insert backdoors into systems which they could return to later.

The UK said the attack was likely to enable large-scale espionage, including the acquisition of personal information and intellectual property.

It was mainly carried out against specific systems which aligned with Hafnium's previous targets, such as defence contractors, think tanks and universities.

Celebrities in Australia anger stranded citizens over 'double standard'

It started with Zac Efron. Then Mark Wahlberg flew over, Matt Damon jetted in, and dozens of other celebrities followed - all to set up temporary homes in Australia.

More recently, Julia Roberts touched down. She's due to film a movie here with George Clooney later this year, one rather aptly titled Ticket to Paradise.

Because amid the pandemic, it does appear that half of Hollywood has fled to Australia, viewing it as a Covid-free idyll.

Life is good in a country that's largely eliminated the virus - people are freely enjoying beaches, bars, and nightclubs.

Most of the famous arrivals are here to work. Australia's government has lured over productions like the next Thor film with tax breaks.

That's led to a bonanza of celebrity sightings, particularly in Sydney:

There's Idris Elba showing up on a concert stage; Natalie Portman buying groceries in Bondi; Chris Pratt partying in a hotel; and Efron lunching at a Korean barbecue restaurant in Chinatown.

The visitor book also includes Awkwafina, Ed Sheeran, Jane Seymour, Melissa McCarthy, Michelle Ye, Paul Mescal, Rita Ora, Ron Howard, Taika Waititi, Tessa Thompson, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hanks and Lord Alan Sugar.

There's also the Australian stars who've come home: Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Kylie and Danni Minogue, Rose Byrne, Isla Fisher and her British husband Sacha Baron Cohen.

"They're calling it Aussiewood," one local entertainment reporter told the BBC.

Pegasus: The System That Links Classified Info-Sharing Among US, UK, Can, Aus, NZ

BY RUSS KICK · PUBLISHED MARCH 29, 2017 · UPDATED MAY 18, 2017

Pegasus 101 Brief [PDF]

>>> The defense and intelligence agencies of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (known as “Five Eyes”) have a long history of cooperation. The US Department of Defense – through the Defense Information Systems Agency – spearheads several initiatives to communicate and share info between the militaries of many countries. One of those efforts is the Pegasus network (formerly Griffin), which links the classified military info-sharing systems of the Five Eyes nations.

There’s very little info about Pegasus online. While poking around an obscure military site, I found a “For Official Use Only” presentation called “Pegasus 101,” which seems to be the most detailed available look at Pegasus and the networks it links.
