This is not a very complicated technology, you can build these devices at home. When something you are focusing on (a letter or word) suddenly jumps, the resulting eeg waves are easy to distinguish from noise. Focus on the letter you want, and within a second or so it will be the one that blinks, wait for it to blink again to confirm the output.
