Madagascar leader urges use of supposed COVID-19 cure

Last May 2020, the president of Madagascar urged citizens to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus by drinking COVID Organics (CVO), an organic herbal beverage he claimed could prevent or cure the virus.
“Let’s drink this herbal tea to protect ourselves, to protect our family and our neighbors […] and there will be no more deaths,” Andry Rajoelina said in a speech on Sunday night, according to local daily L’express de Madagascar.
His remarks came a few hours after the announcement of the country’s first coronavirus death — a 57-year-old man who also had diabetes.
Rajoelina said none of the new cases in the country had drunk CVO, which he said was distributed free of charge in the three regions affected by the pandemic.
Earlier this month, Rajoelina said his government was collaborating with foreign doctors and scientists to study alternative research possibilities, though carrying on with trials of the Artemisia plant, the main component of CVO.
Known under the scientific name of Artemesia Annua, the plant of Chinese origin was first imported to Madagascar in the 1970s to treat malaria.
So far, Madagascar has sent CVO to several African countries including Comoros Island, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Niger, Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal and Chad.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned against the use of CVO without medical supervision and cautioned against self-medication.

Several arrested over plot to kill Madagascar president, attorney general says
ANTANANARIVO, July 22 (Reuters) - Madagascan authorities arrested several people, including foreign nationals, on Tuesday on suspicion of plotting to kill the president, the attorney general said.
Andry Rajoelina was sworn in as president of the Indian Ocean island country in 2019 after a hard-fought election and a constitutional court challenge from his rival.
"According to the evidence in our possession, these individuals had devised a plan for the elimination and neutralization of a number of people including the head of state," the attorney general said in a statement.
It added that investigations were under way and further details could not be disclosed.
The extent of the plot, or how far advanced, was not immediately clear.
The statement did not specify the nationality of the foreign nationals.

Madagascar President Andry Nirina Rajoelina has survived an assassination attempt, AFP reported citing prosecutors.
Several "foreign and Malagasy" suspects, including to two French people, were arrested on Tuesday on "as part of an investigation for undermining state security," AFP reported.
