Gavin Newsom invites world's homeless to California

California Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged to house and feed the world’s homeless population this week during a whirlwind “Comeback California” tour that is designed to stave off a September recall by angry voters.

The Golden State is already cracking under the weight of the nation’s largest homeless population and one of the worst economic climates post-COVID-19. With millions of middle-class residents and business owners fleeing to red states, those left behind have seen a burgeoning lower class emerge.

Gasoline is pushing $5 a gallon, 18 million homeless pack into all the blue cities, and dilapidated freeways are strewn with trash.

Even the Atlantic outlined the hostile economic environment in a lengthy article titled “The California Dream is Dying.”

It’s against this backdrop that Newsom held a press conference Monday pledging $12 billion to combat homelessness on top of billions that have already been spent. People will be taken care of, and anyone who wants to avail themselves to the California dream is welcome, he said in response to a reporter who asked whether he expected the nation’s homeless to descend upon California with this new expenditure.

“It’s about getting people off the streets, out of incidents of crisis, and meeting people where they are and to the extent that people want to come here for new beginnings and all income levels, that’s part of the California dream,” Newsom said. “We have a responsibility to accommodate and enliven and inspire, and California’s dream is still alive and well.”

Newsom added: “I’m proud of people from around the world looking at California again for opportunity, and that, again, that should not just be for certain people. All people should aspire to that California dream regardless of their income level and regarding their lot in life.”

California is the highest-taxed state in the nation, and buying a home is out of reach for the average resident. Newsom did not mention this but rather pointed to an $80 billion budget surplus that he said is enough money to help all achieve the American dream.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva listened to Newsom’s message and was not pleased with what he heard.

“As a private citizen, I support the [Newsom] recall,” he said.

Villanueva has tried to stand in the gap of rising crime and increased homelessness despite a $145 million “defund the police” cut to his budget in the current year.

“Those comments blew us away, we are trying to keep our heads above water, and he goes and says that?” Villanueva told the Washington Examiner. “When he invites the rest of the nation’s homeless to California, that is the death wish.”

Homicides in Los Angeles County are up 58% from last year, and newly elected District Attorney George Gascon refused to file a record 5,900 criminal cases brought by detectives this year, Villanueva said. Gascon ran on a platform of less prosecution and more community assistance for lawbreakers.

“With [Gascon’s] privileged upbringing, this doesn’t impact him,” Villanueva said. “I have homeless with mental illness on the streets who attack residents, set their houses on fire, and run over them with cars. Just the sheer level of violence that comes with the increase in population of homeless is like pouring gasoline on the fire.”

Five arrested in Hong Kong over children's books

Five people in Hong Kong have been arrested on charges of sedition for books they published featuring sheep and wolves.

Hong Kong police say the stories are aimed at inciting hatred amongst young people towards the city's government.

Those arrested were members of a speech therapists' union that produced books for children.

They were arrested under a colonial-era law targeting sedition, which had been rarely used before the anti-government protests.

First convictions under the sedition law carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

At a media briefing on Thursday, police displayed the confiscated books.

One of them is titled "Defenders of the Sheep Village" and tells the story of wolves wanting to occupy a village and eat the sheep, who in turn use their horns to fight back.

Police say the book was connected to the 2019 protests.

Two other books were highlighted as raising concern, including one about 12 sheep taken by wolves to the beasts' village, where they would be cooked.

It potentially alludes to the 12 Hong Kong people captured by China in August last year as they tried to flee the city by boat.

Thursday's arrests add to fears about the shrinking space for dissent in Hong Kong since Beijing imposed a national security law last year.

Security officials have said law enforcement is based on evidence and has nothing to do with an individual's political stance, background or profession.

And this is why the RINO's can't fathom the numbers of people who will NOT be forced into a box job, wearing a mask, for little pay.

But, but, but, it's because they just want the big 300.00 whopping govt unemployment money. Get real.

Keeping up with the Jones' mentality died. It was a victim of COVID.

Chief: Teen who died in Land of Illusion incident wasn't found for 30 minutes because water like 'a pond'

Jul. 22—A local school district is mourning the loss of one of its students as the sheriff's office is continuing to investigate the deadly incident.

Mykiara Jones, 14, a Dayton native who was an incoming freshman at Middletown High School died Tuesday night at the Land of Illusion's Aqua Adventures Waterpark, the Montgomery County Coroner's Office confirmed Wednesday morning.

The incident investigation is ongoing, according to an official with the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

In a letter sent to district parents Wednesday morning, Middletown City Schools Superintendent Marlon Styles wrote that the mother of the girl works in the district so "we will be wrapping our arms around her during this extremely difficult time."

The Student Services Department is working with Access Counseling to have grief counselors available to support students, staff and parents as needed, according to Styles. Access Counseling can be reached at 513-649-8008, Ext. 038.

Butler County Sheriff deputies were called to Land of Illusion Amusement Park at 8762 Thomas Road in Madison Twp. for a report of a juvenile drowning, according to the office. The Madison Twp. EMS and the Land of Illusion staff were attempting to locate the girl who went underwater at approximately 5 p.m.

Kent Hall, Madison Twp. fire chief, said he was the first on the scene and he called for assistance from the Middletown and Franklin fire department water rescue crews and for CareFlight from Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

A Land of Illusion lifeguard located Jones in the water at about 5:30 p.m., 30 minutes later, according to the sheriff's office. She was flown to Dayton Children's Hospital, where she died.

When asked why it took 30 minutes to locate Jones, Hall described the water park as "a pond" and the water isn't clear like a swimming pool.

The BCSO received two 911 calls regarding the search, according to the calls obtained by this news outlet.

One caller said the girl wasn't wearing a life jacket. The teen went into the water and "she never came back up," the caller told dispatchers.

She said the girl was missing for about 12 minutes at the time.

"This is a tragedy no parent should have to endure," Sheriff Richard Jones said in a press release. "These are the calls first responders dread and have difficulty dealing with."

In a post on its Facebook page, Land of Illusion said it is "saddened to learn of the passing of a young girl" at the Aqua Adventure Park.

The park was closed Wednesday "out of respect for her and her family, and for our employees who are also dealing with this tragedy," the Facebook post said.

The trailer will have a new owner come August 13, as it's listed without a reserve so when it crosses the auction block, it will sell. Bonhams estimates the trailer will sell for between $150,000 and $250,000. That's certainly quite a bit higher than a typical Airstream trailer from the early 1990s, but as we've said all along, this trailer is far from typical. With the extraordinary Hollywood connection, all we can say is the sun will rise on August 13. Who knows what the tide could bring.
