Two deaths of Australians in their 40s linked to AstraZeneca

Despite risks, Scott Morrison asks ATAGI to reconsider advice on AstraZeneca

Two more Australians, this time in their forties, have died from the rare blood clotting disease known as thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome or (TTS).

This brings Australia's total to 87 cases with 6 confirmed deaths from a vaccine pool of 6.1 million doses.

The 44 year-old Tasmanian man and 48 year-old Victorian woman both died after receiving their first dose AstraZeneca, which is considered to be higher risk than the second.

A spokesperson from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) confirmed the incidents in a report earlier in the week.

"Sadly, this week we were notified that two confirmed cases of TTS after the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine were fatal. The TGA extends its sincerest condolences to their families and loved ones.”

Also known as Vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia (VIPIT), TTS is normally considered to be an extremely rare blood clotting condition observed in people who have received an adenoviral vector Covid vaccine such as AstraZeneca or Johnson&Johnson.

TTS is triggered by the body’s immune response to the vaccine, and is not related to other blood clot risks such as air travel or birth control medications. TTS, while much rarer than ordinary blood clots, is considered to have a significantly higher fatality rate. The World Health Organisation puts the risk of developing TTS at anywhere between 0.5 – 6.8 per 100,000.

The distribution of AstraZeneca is currently subject to caution for younger Australians after a review of advice by an independent group. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been accused of leaning on the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) in order to change their advice for younger Australians to expedite the vaccine roll-out in Australia. He later clarified that he ‘cannot control what ATAGI advises’ despite his admitted constant appeals to the group.

Pfizer is currently recommended as the preferred vaccine for those between 16-60, but with the two largest states in Australia under strict lockdown, pressure has been put on Scott Morrison to speed up vaccinations.

Adults under 60 can still apply for AstraZeneca if they wish.

“It’s for [ATAGI] to now constantly reconsider how that balance of risk applies and provide their advice accordingly. The situation Australia faces should be managed on the balance of risk as ATAGI has said to me in the past,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in response to questions regarding his ‘constant’ appeals to the ATAGI.

The ATAGI advise the Minister for Health on matters relating to the National Immunisation Program and a range of broader immunisation issues.

They issued a statement on June 17 stating that Pfizer was the preferred vaccine for those between 16-60.

"The recommendation is revised due to a higher risk and observed severity of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) related to the use of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine observed in Australia in the 50-59 year old age group than reported internationally and initially estimated in Australia.”

Democrats Revive Kavanaugh Sex Abuse Allegations, Slam FBI’s 2018 Probe

Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats demanded this week that the FBI hand over additional information related to its 2018 investigation into Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The Democrats led by Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Chris Coons raised a series of questions about the FBI’s handling of its sexual misconduct probe into Brett Kavanaugh in response to a letter the Bureau sent them in June. They expressed particular concern that the FBI had received more than 4,500 tips and shared ones deemed “relevant” to former President Donald Trump’s White House.

“The admissions in your letter corroborate and explain numerous credible accounts by individuals and firms that they had contacted the FBI with information ‘highly relevant to . . . allegations’ of sexual misconduct by Justice Kavanaugh, only to be ignored,” seven Judiciary Democrats wrote in a letter addressed to FBI Director Christopher Wray late Wednesday.

“If the FBI was not authorized to or did not follow up on any of the tips that it received from the tip line, it is difficult to understand the point of having a tip line at all,” the letter continued.

The lawmakers asked the FBI to share additional details including how tips were considered to be “relevant,” how many tips it shared with the Trump White House, whether tips were ever fully investigated and if the Bureau still had copies of the tips. The lawmaker also asked why potential witnesses identified through the tip line were never contacted or interviewed.

In the FBI’s letter, the agency noted that it gave the tips to the Office of the White House Counsel because that was the “requesting entity.” The Bureau also said the Kavanaugh background investigation involved different procedures than the FBI’s criminal probes.

In mid-2018, after Trump nominated then Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, several women came forward with allegations he had sexually assaulted or harassed them. But Judiciary Committee and FBI investigations determined the accusations were unsubstantiated and the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh in October 2018.

On Wednesday, the seven Democratic senators gave Wray until Aug. 31, 2021 to respond to their questions. In addition to Whitehouse and Coons, Sens. Dick Durbin, Patrick Leahy, Richard Blumenthal, Mazie Hirono and Cory Booker signed the letter.

Chinese-controlled Port of Darwin ‘Australia’s most strategic northern port’

Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Dr John Coyne says the Port of Darwin is Australia’s “most strategic northern port” and ownership of the Port is vitally important to Australia’s defence future.

Dr Coyne, who is head of the Northern Australia Strategic Policy Centre at ASPI, told Sky News that Australia hasn’t had a unified strategy around the port “since Federation”.

“Everyone agrees – Northern Territory, Northern Australia is strategically important to the country,” Dr Coyne said.

“We just can’t articulate that into practice.”

Dr Coyne told Sky News host Peta Credlin if we left the Port of Darwin as is, “we leave investment in our northern port in the hands of a Chinese owned company”.

“They will make the decisions.”
