35,000 Descend on Berlin for U.S. Embassy-Backed LGBTQ Street Parade

BERLIN (AP) – Some 35,000 revellers marched for LGBTQ rights at Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day celebration on Saturday, twice as many as expected.

The parade started with a call from Klaus Lederer, Berlin’s senator for culture, to make the city a “queer-freedom zone” in response to deteriorating safety for gays and lesbians in Hungary and neighbouring Poland.

“LGBT-free zones” have been declared in parts of Poland, while Hungary recently passed a law banning the depiction of homosexuality or gender reassignment to minors that has been denounced as discriminatory by human rights groups.

Lederer said the situation in the two EU members “sends shivers down my back.”

The senator also noted that the pandemic had been particularly hard for some gays and lesbians at home as shelters were closed. He said “there is still much work to be done.”

Organizers of the parade had been expecting around 20,000 people amid social distancing rules and a ban on alcohol to combat the risk of new coronavirus infections.

There was no parade last year due to the pandemic so many people took advantage of the warm sunny weather and relatively low rate of infections to take part in the last major gathering for Berlin’s Pride month.

Nearby, the United States embassy flew a rainbow flag under the American flag.

The parade was led by five trucks that were spaced apart to give demonstrators more room as they danced their way to techno beats past the city’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. Organizers made repeated calls for revellers to put masks on and keep their distance – though it wasn’t always possible due to the sheer number of people.

The celebrations were preceded by an apparent homophobic attack on a male couple in a Berlin subway late Friday. Police said the men were sitting in a train when they were approached by a stranger who insulted them and then punched one of the men several times. Other passengers intervened and he was apprehended after fleeing briefly.

Also Friday, Bishop Christian Stäblein asked during a service at Berlin’s Marienkirche for forgiveness from the LGBTQ community for the suffering caused to them by the evangelical church.

Anti-Vaccine Passport Protesters Storm French Town Hall, Pull Down Macron Portrait.

Around 300 anti-vaccine passport protesters stormed the town hall of Chambéry, denouncing French measures to implement a vaccine passport.

The group had gathered in front of the courthouse at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday before heading for the town hall.

After noticing that the door to the town hall had been left open, the protesters entered, yelling various slogans, including, “No to the [vaccine] pass,” and “Macron must resign!” French broadcaster France Info reports.

The protesters then took down the official portrait of President Emmanuel Macron, a symbolic gesture that was also seen in late 2019 when climate activists stole the presidential portraits from some 130 town halls across France.

“The city of Chambéry condemns with the utmost firmness this intrusion,” the mayor’s office said in a statement, and added that it was not “tolerable to attack republican symbols and the symbolic place that is a city hall”.

According to France Info, the demonstrators only remained in the town hall for 10 to 15 minutes before departing. They then continued their demonstration in other parts of the town before attempting to march to a nearby expressway road, but were blocked by local gendarmes. It was the third protest against vaccine passports in the city in a week.

The protest comes just days after an alleged arson attack on a vaccination centre in the municipality of Urrugne in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques county.

Philippe Aramendi, the mayor of Urrugne, said: “It may be too early to know if we are dealing with anti-vaxxers, but if they are, it is saddening.”

Last weekend, over 100,000 people took to the streets to protest France’s vaccine passport policy, which will see people required to present a health pass to access certain businesses such as restaurants or engage in various forms of travel.

Business owners that do not check for the health pass could also be punished under the new policy, with fines of up to €45,000 (£38,487/$53,100) and a year in prison.

Farage: Far from Opening Up, We’re Locking Down, as 600,000 Pinged by NHS App

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has said that since ‘Freedom Day’ on Monday, England appears to be locking down rather than opening up, as hundreds of thousands of Britons are told to quarantine after being pinged by the NHS coronavirus app.

The National Health Service app alerts users if they have been in proximity to anyone, also with the phone app, who has tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus and instructs them to self-isolate. Recent weeks have seen an increasing number of people told to quarantine, giving rise to the term ‘pingdemic’. In the first week of July, the NHS app pinged more than 500,000 people; the following week, 600,000.

The pingdemic has resulted in staff shortages, including at petrol stations and supermarkets, with reports across the country of empty shelves, prompting Tobias Ellwood MP, the chairman of the defence select committee, to state that the army could be used to help if staff shortages continue.

“The urgency of staff shortages now impacting on supermarkets and, by extension, national food distribution, warrants a Cobra meeting today for which the deployment of the army to assist in HGV driver shortfall should be a last-resort option considered,” Mr Ellwood said on Thursday, according to The Times.

There are also staff absences in police forces, public sanitation services, and railway network control centres, including signallers.

Responding to the surge in self-isolation being prompted by the NHS app, Mr Farage said during his GB News evening programme on Thursday: “What a mess the whole thing is! I thought, with the early vaccine rollout, not only had Brexit been fully vindicated but that we put ourselves in a very advantageous position compared to other countries.”

Remarking on the hundreds of thousands advised to self-isolate this month, Farage said: “Far from opening up, we’re actually beginning a process of lockdown down. If we go on at this rate, goodness knows where we’ll be.”

Unlike orders from the NHS’s Test and Trace team, it is not a legal requirement to self-isolate if pinged by the app, with some employers reportedly instructing their staff to ignore the alerts if a PCR test shows a negative result. However, ministers have told Britons to follow the app’s orders to isolate for 10 days.

Reports also suggest that people are deleting the app in order to avoid being pinged, with a YouGov poll finding this week that 52 per cent of young people have either deleted the app or refused to use it when they should have, such as switching off the Bluetooth or avoided checking in to venues with the QR code. The poll found, as per the reports from The Times, that of the people that downloaded the app in the first place, 10 per cent have deleted it.

“Is it time to scrap the app?” Farage said. “I think it really is.”

“I think the app is now doing more harm than good,” he added.

Czech Senate Approves Amendment Granting Right to Bear Arms in Constitution

The senate of the Czech Republic has approved adding a right to self-defence with a weapon to its Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms following a successful petition campaign.

A total of 54 of the 74 senators voted to amend the charter, surpassing the needed three-fifths majority of votes, and will become law once signed by Czech president Milos Zeman, who has previously expressed support for a European Second Amendment and is unable to veto the constitutional change in any case.

The new section of the charter will read, “the right to defend one’s own life or the life of another person with a weapon is guaranteed under the conditions laid down by law,” broadcaster Czech Radio reports.

The amendment comes after a successful petition campaign that saw over 102,000 signatories, including constitutional officials, demand that a right to bear arms in self-defence be added to the country’s constitution in response to European Union moves to put continent-wide limits on the ownership of firearms and other weapons.

While the Czech Republic has previously been forced to implement European Commission regulations on firearms, the constitutional change should now prevent any EU directives restricting the right to bear arms for citizens and residents of the country.

The European Commission has argued that restricting firearms was needed to fight terrorism, but critics noted that terrorists have been found to mainly use illegal weapons.

The Czech Republic has fought against EU pushes for gun control for years, and President Miloš Zeman has been an ardent supporter of the right to bear arms, signing the petition that led to the constitutional change in 2018.

Zeman outraged journalists the year prior after he brandished a fake rifle during a press conference with the words “for journalists” inscribed on the side of it, despite the fact the only “ammunition” it contained being Becherovka liquor.

Contrary to European Union bureaucrats, the Czech leader has argued that European citizens should have a right to bear arms to defend themselves against terrorists.

American Jewish Congress Demands Twitter 'Permanently Ban' Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

The American Jewish Congress is demanding Twitter "permanently ban" Georgia Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene for having political opinions they disagree with, which they claim is a form of violence that puts their lives at risk.

Greene last month took a field trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and apologized for drawing parallels to the unpersoning of mask-resisters to the unpersoning of Jews in 1930s Germany but it got her nothing.

On Monday, Twitter temporarily suspended the Georgia lawmaker from the platform for tweets which included the claim that COVID-19 was not dangerous for those under 65 who are not obese.

The violation of Twitter's misinformation policy, sparking a 12-hour suspension, came on the heels of controversial comments she had made about COVID measures where she invoked the Holocaust.

"Greene is an unrepentant misinformation machine and should be permanently banned from Twitter," it added.

The AJCongress said that Greene had been "deliberately spreading misinformation about the Holocaust to help grow her political power, putting the Jewish community's safety at risk."

[…] Meanwhile, the American Jewish Congress released a report this week which said Greene was being among lawmakers who were targeting American Jews for political purposes.

With the title "Jews Are Not a Prop," the report described how the "toxic drivers of antisemitic hate" also included QAnon, the Christian Identity Movement and those who push claims that the 2020 U.S. election was stolen.

The advocacy group also said that the online platform Gab facilitates supporting these ideologies.

Last month, the American Jewish Committee wrote an article in Newsweek calling for Gab to be shut down through the creation of "exceptions" to the First Amendment.

"There are two options for dealing with online platforms that promote hate and potential violence in our political system," said American Jewish Congress president Jack Rosen. "The first is to ban them. There are precedents in law where exceptions to the First Amendment regarding hate speech exist."

Rosen cited no legal precedent to ban "hate speech" as no such precedent exists.

Nonetheless, Big Tech have instituted such "hate speech" bans on their own thanks to lobbying from groups like the AJC and the Anti-Defamation League.

Taliban Wants Afghan President to Step Down Before Ceasefire

A Taliban spokesman said women would have more rights under the new government than during earlier Taliban rule

In an interview with The Associated Press, a Taliban spokesman said there won’t be peace in Afghanistan until a new government is formed and President Ashraf Ghani steps down.

Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen called Ghani a “warmonger” and accused him of using his Tuesday speech on the Muslim holiday of Eid to call for an offensive against the Taliban. Shaheen also brought up allegations that the 2019 election Ghani won was fraudulent. Both Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah claimed victory in the election.

Shaheen said there must be an agreement on a new government that is acceptable to the Taliban and to other Afghans. If that happens, he insisted, “there will be no war.”

Shaheen said the Taliban does not want to monopolize power in any future government that might be formed. “I want to make it clear that we do not believe in the monopoly of power because any governments who [sought] to monopolize power in Afghanistan in the past, were not successful governments,” he said. “So we do not want to repeat that same formula.”

The Taliban spokesman also brought up women’s rights, an issue that is frequently used as an argument in Western media for why the US should continue the war since the Taliban is notoriously oppressive towards women. Even George W. Bush claimed he cared about the women of Afghanistan when he warned against President Biden’s decision to leave the country.

Shaheen sought to ease those fears in his discussion with AP. He said under the new government, women will be allowed to work, go to school, and participate in politics. He added that Taliban commanders in districts recently captured have orders to allow women to carry on as before.

Many Soldiers Still Aren’t Vaccinated; What’s The Army’s Plan?

Thousands of soldiers are still not vaccinated against COVID-19, and Army leaders are moving to educate the unvaccinated as the deadly Delta variant sweeps through the country.

Col. Owen Price, the Fort Bragg Force Health Protection officer, said vaccine hesitancy mostly spurs from health concerns and latching onto misinformation mostly found on social media.

“There’s two camps,” Price told Military.com in an interview. “One is they just haven’t heard the message that resonates with them to overcome hesitancy. Whether that concerns pregnancy or side effects, long-term health effects are a big concern for some. The other camp is people who have just received a ton of misinformation, and it’s very hard to unseat that even when providing them facts.”

Price said soldiers who have come to recent education sessions on the vaccine are misinformed about it. He said in his experience, soldiers are usually not pedaling conspiracy theories surrounding the virus, but some have leaned on random, faulty information from social media, versus the science, and they are coming with concerns from a health conscious point of view. He said the key now is talking to soldiers individually and addressing their concerns respectfully.

“This has been an uptick recently, with soldiers coming to education sessions with a list they found online – with ingredients such as metals and plastics, which aren’t in the vaccine at all,” Price said. “One soldier had an outlandish figure of people that have died from the vaccine but couldn’t explain where they got that information from. There’s crazy stuff out there.”

But some soldiers have health concerns, even if experts say the research doesn’t back up those fears. Pvt. Abegail Finck, who is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, has a family history of an autoimmune disease she’s afraid the vaccine could inflame. She is also pregnant and concerned whether the vaccines could harm her or her baby.

“For me, I’ll keep wearing the mask to work,” she said. “ This being my first child, I didn’t want to risk anything.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the vaccines are safe for pregnant women and recommend meeting with a health-care provider to go over concerns.

For other soldiers, some are concerned with having feverish symptoms for a day or two, which could mean missing out on training days or not being able to attend a school that will help them with promotion.

“My unit tried to get us all vaccinated, but I was going to Air Assault school soon,” a non-commissioned officer with the Texas National Guard told Military.com on the condition of anonymity.

Air Assault is a grueling 10-day course where soldiers have to pass numerous physical challenges such as a long ruck march and obstacle course.

“I probably should still go get it, but I didn’t want to be knocked out or be the one in a million dude who gets the heart problem, be benched forever,” he said referring to myocarditis,. a rare heart inflammation condition associated with vaccines.

Meet the CDC-Backed Groups That Want To Teach Trans Ideology to Kindergartners

Controversial sex-ed curriculum draws ire from parents

Justin Thiel, 31, was ready to send his oldest daughter to kindergarten at the public school in his rural Nebraska town. He made a sudden change of plans once he read the new sex education standards adopted by the state.

"I signed her up for a Christian school the day I read the standards," Thiel told the Washington Free Beacon.

The National Sex Education Standards, which provided a roadmap for Nebraska Department of Education, teach kindergartners the names of reproductive body parts and define gender identity and reproduction. Children in Grades 3-5 are taught about masturbation, hormone blockers used to transition pre-pubescent children, STDs, and the differences between cisgender, transgender, nonbinary, and "gender expansive." Grades 6-8 are taught about abortion, contraception, and differences between vaginal, oral, and anal sex. Grades 9-10 must teach "reproductive justice," which entails unlimited abortion access.

Dr. Susan Greenwald, a retired pediatrician in Nebraska who worked with childhood victims of sexual abuse for 35 years, said the standards are closer to "grooming" than age-appropriate education.

"The first thing out of my mouth was, ‘holy s***—what pedophile wrote this?'" Greenwald told the Free Beacon. "This is grooming 101. If you were a pedophile and wanted to teach your kid to be a victim, this would be what you use."

The Nebraska curriculum takes a number of exact phrases and guidelines from the National Sex Education Standards' Second Edition, which was released in 2020 by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), Advocates for Youth, and Answer. The three groups rake in millions of dollars each year from the federal government and abortion-focused charities. State and local education departments from Nebraska to New York have adopted the curriculum, but parents, doctors, and government officials are starting to push back against lesson plans that focus on hormone therapy, abortion, and gender transition.

Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts (R.) is publicly feuding with the state's department of education. The governor calls the curriculum unworkable and is hosting town halls across the state for hundreds of parents to voice their concerns about the sex education standards.

"The people pushing this are not the parents—they're advocates," Ricketts told the Free Beacon. "I tell parents, ‘Don't settle'—there's no fixing these standards. They have to be scrapped."

The Nebraska Department of Education, which consists of elected members separate from the governor, defended the process for drafting the curriculum as "transparent."

"We appreciate feedback from everyone in Nebraska including the Governor and we are in the process of using public comments and concerns as we write a second draft," a spokesman said. "We intend to have a second draft out in the coming weeks."

Dr. Jeanne Stolzer, professor of child development at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, said it is hard to know exactly what impact these standards will have because nothing this radical has ever been taught in schools before.

"It has the potential to really wreak havoc with kids socially, psychologically, emotionally," Stolzer told the Free Beacon. "Why would we want to experiment on our kids like guinea pigs?"

Neither SIECUS, Advocates for Youth, nor Answer returned requests for comment.

Annoyed With Israeli Strikes, Russia To Invest In Syrian Air Defence: Report

Russia is unsatisfied with Israel’s repeated attacks on Syria and is stepping up support for the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces (SyAADF), a well-informed Russian source told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on July 24.

The Israeli Air Force carried out two attacks on Syria this week. On July 19, a series of airstrikes hit targets in the northern governorate of Aleppo. On July 21, several airstrikes targeted al-Daba air base in the central governorate of Homs.

Losses were reported after both attacks. Nevertheless, the spokesman for the Russian Reconciliation Center claimed that most Israeli missiles were intercepted by the SyAADF.

The Russian source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the recent statements were related to the talks launched with the US following the first summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden in June.

“Moscow received a confirmation that Washington does not welcome the continuous Israeli raids, according to the source,” Asharq Al-Awsat source said. “The rhetoric was escalated against any Israeli military action targeting Syria’s sovereignty, and in violation of international resolutions.”

According to the source, Russia has not only toughen up its rhetoric against Israel’s repeated attacks on Syria, but also stepped up its support for the SyAADF.

“The fact that all the launched missiles were destroyed indicates a fundamental change in handling this issue,” the source said, adding that “Israel’s air force has not entered the Syrian airspace and carries out its attacks from neighboring lands, but the attacks are no longer effective because the Syrian anti-aircraft systems have been enhanced, and Moscow provided Damascus with air defense equipment.”

The unnamed source went on to reveal that Russian military advisors had supported SyAADF personnel during the last Israeli attacks.

Russia is apparently trying to set clear rules with Israel, which has been stepping up its attacks on Syria. So far, Israel has failed to achieve any of its declared goals in Syria. Moscow’s pressure will further complicate the situation for Tel Aviv.

Masking Up Is a Political Statement, Not Disease Prevention

Mask mandates are making a comeback in America and most of us are very unhappy about it. We should be. Even with the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus, masks simply aren’t necessary.

The best mitigation strategy against the pandemic has always been vaccines. Before vaccines became widely available, masking up, social distancing, and other disease prevention strategies made sense for some people.

But now that 160 million Americans have been fully vaccinated and the vaccines are in every pharmacy, doctor’s office, and county health facility in the nation, forcing people to wear masks becomes nothing more than tribal signaling.

If officials are more concerned with health than with partisan signals—and they should be—then the era of the mask mandate must come to and end. When vaccines were unavailable and even medical experts did not understand the circumstances under which the infected were most likely to transmit the disease, widespread mask usage was likely useful in certain indoor settings, though even then it was probably driven “by factors other than mandates.” But the vaccines change the calculation. If you’re a fully vaccinated adult, you don’t need the mask. And if you’re an unvaccinated adult, you also don’t need the mask—you need to get vaccinated. (If you’re a kid, COVID-19 poses very, very little risk to your health.)

Wearing a mask tells everyone that you are conspicuously following the advice of the CDC, Democrats, and other authoritarians. Ordinarily, no one would give a fig if you did. So the mask becomes an important self-justifying signal of support for an ideology.

What makes that so silly is how unnecessary it is.

Theoretically, if there are places in the country where vaccine rates are very low, people who obstinately refuse to become vaccinated might get some small benefit out of widespread mask usage. But in practice, people who don’t want to get the vaccine are unlikely to follow the other, more annoying mitigation strategies. On the contrary, the places that are most likely to reintroduce mask mandates and see widespread compliance are places where vaccination rates are very high.

Vaccination should not be thought of as just one tool among many: It is the tool. The masks are an insult to this life-saving, pandemic-crushing medical innovation.

Masks are also an insult to the intelligence of the American people. Forcing people to wear masks presupposes they’re too stupid to know how best to protect themselves and their families. This point of view is prevalent not just among leftists, but also elitists on the right.

The choice of whether or not to wear a mask or get the vaccine is a personal one. We don’t need protection from ourselves for any reason, even if some of us believe in nutty conspiracies and ludicrous science. Mask mandates need to be tossed on the rubbish pile of history and forgotten.

Hunter Biden Will Not Talk About Art Sales at Gallery Events: White House

President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden will not discuss art sales at gallery events while mingling with prospective buyers, the White House said Friday.

Biden administration officials and the gallery helping sell the younger Biden’s art previously said Hunter Biden would attend gallery events in New York City and Los Angeles later this year.

But Hunter Biden will not have discussions about art sales at those events, White House press secretary Jen Psaki claimed.

“He’s not—those discussions will be happening with the gallerist,” Psaki told reporters in Washington.

Asked how the administration could guarantee that, Psaki could not provide an answer. Will there be anything stopping a prospective buyer from telling Hunter Biden that they plan to buy a piece? “He will not know, we will not know who purchases his art,” Psaki said.

The latest claim on the unusual arrangement, which the White House helped craft, drew criticism from Walter Shaub, who directed the Office of Government Ethics during the Obama administration.

He accused Psaki of deflecting when asked about possible buyers telling Hunter Biden they’d buy his art.

“The response? She deflects, saying Hunter won’t know who the buyers are, then jumps to another reporter. They have no answer,” Shaub wrote on Twitter.

“The secrecy agreement was designed to keep one group of people from knowing who buys Hunter Biden’s art: The public. There’s no mechanism for monitoring, no mechanism for notifying the public if confidentiality is broken, no mechanism for tracking if buyers get access to [government],” he added.
