286 arrested in global human trafficking and migrant smuggling operation

Police rescue 430 human trafficking victims and identify 4,000 irregular migrants from 74 countries

LYON, France – Criminal groups behind human trafficking and migrant smuggling have been hit hard in an operation coordinated by INTERPOL, with 286 suspects arrested worldwide.

Law enforcement officials from 47 countries participated in Operation Liberterra (5 - 9 July), carrying out some 500,000 inspections at checkpoints and airports as well as at hotspots identified through intelligence and investigations.

Authorities rescued some 430 human trafficking victims and identified 4,000 irregular migrants originating from 74 different countries. Many of them required medical, psychological and housing assistance and were taken into the care of protective services.

In addition, 60 new transnational investigations were initiated.Fake or stolen identity documents remain the golden ticket when it comes to helping people cross borders illegally, with such documents seized on every continent. On the first day of the operation, authorities in Tanzania arrested a Ugandan bus driver carrying a box of 169 forged passports from Kampala to Dar Es Salaam.

“Operation Liberterra is a five-day snapshot of the global trafficking and smuggling situation, and how multinational, highly organized criminal networks only focus on one thing: profit,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock.

“With 22 criminal groups dismantled, it also shows what coordinated, global law enforcement action can achieve.”

Crime groups dismantled around the world

Operational highlights included:

Algerian authorities dismantled a smuggling group focusing on maritime routes to European coasts.

Colombia dismantled two different criminal organizations, making 22 arrests. While one group was dedicated to smuggling migrants to the US, the other group focused on bringing Cuban and Haitian migrants from Ecuador into Colombia. In addition, two subjects of INTERPOL Red Notices wanted internationally by Spain for human trafficking were arrested.

Authorities in Ecuador arrested 8 suspects who smuggled migrants to the US using a legitimate travel agency as a cover to book flights via Mexico.

Officers in Ghana intercepted two Nigerian suspects accused of running a human trafficking ring between Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

Six members of an organized crime group were arrested in North Macedonia. The leader had been working with associates in the Middle East to smuggle migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Syria to Greece.

Authorities in Sudan rescued 253 victims of human trafficking, arresting 32 suspects.

Police have seized 48 terabytes of mostly adult images and videos in a raid on Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty's home as part of a probe into her husband's alleged connections to illegal porn films.

Officers are now seeking to clone Ms Shetty's phone and may also bring her in for a second round of questioning, the Times of India reported.

Husband Raj Kundra, 45, was arrested on July 19 in Mumbai by police who said they have 'sufficient evidence' that he is a 'key conspirator' in a porn production ring.

Mr Kundra attended the search with officers on Friday and later had his police custody extended until July 27. He has denied all allegations.

Ms Shetty, 46, told police during questioning on Friday she believed Mr Kundra was innocent and claimed his brother-in-law Pradeep Bakshi was the one involved with mobile app 'HotShots', which allegedly streamed pornographic content, the Economic Times reported.

She said she was 'unaware of the exact nature of the content' on the app, but described it as 'erotica' rather than pornography.

Alleged director Tanveer Hashmi, who has denied ever meeting Mr Kundra, described the clips as 'soft porn… short films of 20-25 minutes, which had nudity'.

Publishing or transmitting 'obscene' material including porn is illegal in India under a 2015 law and punishable by up to seven years in jail.

UP Cops Bust Child Trafficking Racket, Rescue 6 Kids In Overnight Op

The children were rescued during an overnight operation conducted in Aligarh and surrounding areas as part of anti-human trafficking "Operation Khushi", police said.

Uttar Pradesh police has busted a child trafficking racket with the arrest of 16 persons, officials said on Monday, adding six kidnapped kids were rescued in the operation.

The children were rescued during an overnight operation conducted in Aligarh and surrounding areas as part of the special anti-human trafficking "Operation Khushi", they said.

Acting on a tip-off, police caught three persons near a crossing at village Borna under Mahuakheda police station area on Sunday evening, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kalanidhi Naithani said.

They told police that four kidnapped children were being held in a house in Ganga Nagar colony under Gandhi park police station area, he said.

Police immediately raided the premises and rescued them, the SSP said, adding two more kidnapped children were freed from the clutches of other members of the gang at another house in an area that falls under the Delhi gate police station area.

Two of these children had gone missing from Ghaziabad and four from Aligarh, Mr Naithani said, dubbing the overnight action as "unprecedented".

"Sixteen people who mediated the sale and purchase of infants and toddlers have been arrested. These include nine women," he said.

The male members of the gang with a nexus across the state would kidnap children and hand them over to the women, who would then sell them off to childless couples for ₹ 50,000 each and sometimes even in lakhs of rupees, Mr Naithani said.

The police teams that carried out the rescue operation under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (SP) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat have been rewarded, he said.

The children have been handed over to their families and further legal proceedings against the gang members are underway, he added.

No Trafficking: Border Police After 42 Children From Assam Rescued

Days after 42 people were rescued from human traffickers, a senior Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) officer has claimed that most of the people in Assam are migrating to other states in search of better avenues rather than being trafficked.

SSB Inspector General of Frontier Headquarters, Sanjeev Sharma said some bad elements take advantage of the economic condition of the poor people and indulge in trafficking them.

"There is not much difference between human trafficking and migration of population. When people find greener pastures and get better salaries, then they go to far away places also. It is not proper to term it as human trafficking," he told PTI in an interview.

Mr Sharma cited examples of many tea gardens, which have closed down and their workers have migrated to other places.

"The main reason is economic. If local industries are established and local tourism is developed, then there is huge potential. If such indigenous things are done here, then the locals would not like to leave their own home.

"Because of this, some migration takes place and some people exploit them too. For illicit trade also, people are taken from here. Awareness is prime to stop this," he added.

Reviewing the India-Bhutan border security scenario in Baksa district of Assam on Sunday, the IGP said the SSB is trying to ensure that no human trafficking takes place from the neighbouring nation.

On July 23, a total of 42 children were rescued from different parts of Sikkim, while efforts are on to locate 38 others who were trafficked from four villages of Chirang district along the Indo-Bhutan border.

Earlier this month, police had rescued nine girls from Kerala who were trafficked from Assam, while 37 others were rescued from Rangia and Baksa when they were being taken to Mumbai and Gujarat.

Mr Sharma further said that the SSB had taken initiative to rescue 34 people from a Gujarat-bound bus in June from Baksa.

He said that the 24th Battalion of SSB at Rangia recently apprehended seven traffickers and rescued seven juvenile girls, and assured that the force will take all possible action against human traffickers and drug peddlers active along the Bhutan border.

Altogether 107 people have been rescued in the last two months since Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed office.

Vice’s Liz Landers made reference to “some of these dark web, um, platforms we’re seeing kind of pop up like Gab” during the interview with Mayorkas during a broader video about Vice’s gripe with Americans who hold non-leftist, non-corporate political beliefs.

“The dark web is an extraordinary challenge,” Mayorkas said. “Drawing the line between speech and the connectivity between speech and violence is not always easy, but that’s our responsibility and we do it, always guided by our constitutional principles. Our focus on the dark web is in the criminal arena.”

Gab CEO Andrew Torba responded to Lander’s bungling of the term “dark web” by writing, “Thank you Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for defending free speech and Gab against the hateful attacks of this Vice News “reporter” who wrongfully referred to Gab as the “Dark Web. As he knows, we’re not a dark web site and we regularly work with law enforcement all around the world to stop criminals with evil in their hearts, many of whom are radical left wing communists who come to Gab to start trouble in our community. The US government knows this, which is why the Homeland Security Secretary didn’t get baited by Vice’s stupid question.”

Attacks on Gab have come from both sides of the political establishment. In March, Republican governor of Texas Greg Abbott pontificated that “Anti-semitic platforms like Gab have no place in Texas, and certainly do not represent Texas values.” Abbott did not provide any explanation or context as to why he made such bizarre claims about Gab, or why he seems to be obsessed with “anti-semitism.”

The Bible Is Clear: Transgender Identity Is Incompatible With Christianity

The transgender movement is making inroads across American society, from the White House to magazine covers to mainline Protestant churches. In less than a decade, the idea of changing one’s identity to match an internal sense of gender went from unthinkable to passé. In fact, schools and school boards have penalized teachers for disagreeing with this ideology. Yet millions of Christians — and those of other faiths and none — still reject the transgender orthodoxy, and for good reason.

On Sunday, Sam Ferguson, rector at my church, The Falls Church Anglican, delivered a fantastic sermon explaining why transgender identity is incompatible with biblical Christianity — and how Christians can disagree with transgender orthodoxy while extending kindness and God’s grace to the men and women who struggle with gender dysphoria (the persistent and painful condition of identifying with the gender opposite their biological sex).

Ferguson noted that in modern America, “gender has become divorced from biology.” He recounted that his interactions with gender dysphoric friends taught him three key lessons: that gender dysphoria is real and involves real suffering; that uncertainty on these issues is pervasive, especially among Christians; and that Christian engagement requires compassion and clarity.

He laid out two essential questions in this debate: What does it mean to be human? Where do I go in the face of pain and dysphoria to find hope?

Ferguson recalled a long discussion with a friend who suffered from gender dysphoria, a man who saw himself as female. He let Ferguson pray for him, entered a long-term friendship with him, and accepted the gospel. The two of them delved into the Bible’s teaching on what it means to be human — specifically in Genesis 1-2 — and came to the conclusion that transgender identity is incompatible with biblical Christianity.

1. Humans are created

When Genesis recounts the origin of humankind, it places the emphasis not on men and women but on God as Creator. God, not humans, says, “Let there be light.” God, not humans, creates the birds of the air and the fish of the sea. God, not humans, places His image on mankind.

Ferguson zeroed in on Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

“We’re not our own authors,” Ferguson noted. “God grants us dignity to steward our identity but not to create it.” Furthermore, the Bible does not say “God made them, black and white” or “God made them, smart and not smart.” Rather, it emphasizes the gender — male and female.

1. Our bodies play a role in determining identity

God created humans as embodied creatures, so each person’s identity always includes his or her body. Ferguson noted the simple claim of transgenderism — that someone has a “boy mind in a girl body.” Transgender orthodoxy claims that the body is important but not essential to a person’s identity. It insists that authenticity may require changing the body, like one changes a winter coat.

Yet in Genesis 2, God forms Adam from the dust of the ground, and the first man gets his name from that very ground (adama means “ground” in Hebrew). God does not just use the dust however. He also breathes into Adam, giving him a spiritual life.

“Man is not less than a physical being but he is also spiritual,” Ferguson noted. “Our fundamental identity as male or female is about our whole being, not reducible to an inner sense.”

Cruz Blocks Israel Bill Over Watered-Down Support for Jewish State

Legislation equivocates on diplomatic support for Israel and Palestinian statehood

Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) is blocking a piece of Israel-related legislation over concerns that the measure's language waters down support for the Jewish state, congressional sources confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon on Monday.

Cruz will also introduce an amendment to the legislation that strips the contested language and replaces it with a statement enshrining American support for Israel, according to a copy of that amendment also obtained by the Free Beacon. The senator will block the bill from moving forward until his amendment is considered.

The bill in question is the Israel Relations Normalization Act of 2021, which has been working its way through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is now coming up for a vote in the Senate. The legislation broadly aims to solidify congressional support for Abraham Accords peace agreements but has been subject to increasing controversy in recent weeks due to the last-minute inclusion of language that would establish a different U.S. policy equivocating on diplomatic support for Israel and Palestinian statehood.

The changes prompted Cruz to pull his sponsorship of the original legislation late last month. Cruz says the current version of the bill would pour millions of dollars in aid into the Palestinian government and completely rewrite longstanding U.S. policy, which specifically supports Israel in its peace negotiations. Cruz's amendment would strip the language in question, bringing the bill back in line with established U.S. policy on the issue.

The dispute hints at deeper divisions in the Senate over the direction of U.S. policy on peace negotiations and relations with Israel. The Biden administration wants to boost diplomacy with the Palestinian government and has unfrozen millions of dollars in U.S. taxpayer aid as a good-will gesture—a decision that Cruz and many other Republicans opposed, citing the Palestinian leadership's ongoing support for terrorism and incitement against Israel.

The most controversial change in the legislation is the insertion of language that would rewrite American policy regarding peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Congress has mandated since 2012 that U.S. policy must be to "assist" and "support the Government of Israel" in its ongoing talks with the Palestinians. The Israel Relations Normalization Act, however, alters this language to strip statements of American support for Israel in peace talks, instead stating only that the United States supports "a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resulting in two states living side by side in peace, security, and mutual recognition."

The language, Cruz said, was not included in the original legislation and was inserted late last month, just hours before the bill was set to be advanced. Cruz, in a statement at the time, said his efforts to delete the language were thwarted by Senate Foreign Relations Committee leadership. He is now offering an amendment that reinserts language enshrining American support for Israel in peace talks.

Cruz's amendment reasserts that America’s policy should be to support "the Government of Israel" as it negotiates with the Palestinians.
