If you don't know where to start with reading the bible, Try the book called "1 John". It's short, covers the most important topics, and is a good intro. (A guy named Greg Laurie suggests that.)

It's not the same as the book of John, as in Matthew-Mark-Luke-John at the beginning of the new testament.
