Four people are confirmed dead after a business jet crashed and burst into flames Monday afternoon in Truckee, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane, a Bombardier CL 600 jet, crashed into a heavily wooded area near the Ponderosa Golf Course when the pilot was trying to land at the Truckee Tahoe Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Two flight crew members and two passengers died in Monday's crash. The aircraft has the capacity to hold about 14 people and two crew members.

"Sounded like two dump trucks hitting each other at 100 miles per hour," said Eric Conklin, who runs a mobile home park across the street. "[Heard] a large boom; felt like an earthquake in the house."

"There's no survivors that we know of at this point," the Nevada County coroner said at a Monday evening briefing.

A spokesperson with the Truckee Tahoe Airport said there was smoke and haze from the Tamarack Fire burning in Alpine County at the time, but it was not enough to restrict aircraft from flying.

Cal Fire said crews contained the fire to about a quarter of an acre, but people are being asked to avoid the area as trees damaged by the crash could still fall.

The Truckee Tahoe Airport announced on Facebook that it will be closed until Tuesday morning.

The FAA said it will release the aircraft tail number after investigators verify it at the scene.

It is still not yet known where the jet was flying from.

"I started to pray for the families in there," said Gia Jimenez, who lives across the street from the crash. "I saw a lot of people crying. This is a small town; you know everyone."

Conklin said he's concerned about how close the crash happened to a residential area.

"I don't know if there's anything that can be done in terms of diverting air traffic," he said. "It’s a terrible tragedy for all involved."
