Maritime Prepositioning Squadron vessels have the capability to discharge their AAVs to the Sea.
They are not expendable but their operating concept is to offload to a benign secure shore.

The MPS concept has been in place since the 1985. They offloaded in SA in 1990, Somalia in 92 (some pierside and others at anchor) & Kuwait in 03. They provide the equipment for a full MEB for 30 days…they are not amphibs.
