Never heard the expression

like high tea in hell?

High tea is to tea and biscuits what a full English is to a continental breakfast: it is the real deal and then some.

We have the expression 'from hell' to indicate the worst imaginable of its kind. The neighbours from hell are the worst you could imagine. The 'high tea from hell' would be the sort of refreshment the Devil would enjoy.

Stephen King ( Sleeping Beauties ) changes that expression to 'in hell' because it is not logical to think of the Devil's high tea taking place outside hell.
