Time to Move to Canada? Alberta Declares COVID-19 a Common Flu

If it weren’t for the snow and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, I would emigrate to Alberta, Canada. Like Sweden, which displayed significant intestinal fortitude in defying the lockdown drumbeat throughout the pandemic, Alberta is using common sense. The province is satisfied with the vaccine uptake among its citizens, and COVID-19 is losing special status.

COVID-19 is officially losing its special status in Alberta, signalling an end to the pandemic in the province. The Chinese Virus will be treated just like the flu and other respiratory diseases in Alberta, according to the latest provincial guidance.

On Wednesday, Premier Jason Kenney’s government took a bold step and announced that quarantines are no longer mandatory for anyone who tests positive for the virus beginning on July 29th.

According to the press release, provincial leaders are recognizing that viruses are going to virus:

Nearly 75.6 percent of eligible Albertans have now received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 64.3 percent are fully immunized. Vaccines dramatically reduce the risk of severe outcomes and the risk of infection. While COVID-19 cases may rise in the coming months, a surge of hospitalizations and other severe outcomes is much less likely thanks to vaccines.

In the coming weeks, Alberta’s health system will take steps to make sure that it is ready to support all patients, including those with COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses, like influenza, which health officials expect to increase this year.

Alberta measures severe illness and hospitalizations rather than positive tests. Quarantine will now move from mandatory to recommended if you receive a positive test. They will continue to test for severe cases and manage outbreaks in high-risk settings like nursing homes. However, this is typical of what the United States does for influenza.

Republicans demand answers about Wuhan lab gain-of-funtion research, why top scientist said COVID-19 looked engineered then called it 'crackpot theory' after speaking with Fauci

Republican lawmakers are demanding answers about potential gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Two House Republicans want to question a top scientist as to why he originally said the COVID-19 virus looked engineered, but then just days later he called the idea a "crackpot theory" after speaking with Dr. Anthony Fauci.

House Committee on Oversight and Reform ranking member Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) and House Committee on the Judiciary ranking member Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) are calling to speak to Fauci and Kristian Andersen, a virologist at the Scripps' Department of Immunology and Microbiology. The Congressmen want Fauci and Andersen "to brief the committees about gain-of-function research conducted at the Wuhan lab and the possibility COVID-19 was engineered to be more contagious."

In the news release from the Republican House members, they cite an email Andersen sent to Dr. Fauci on Jan. 31, 2020, which stated that COVID-19 appeared to be engineered. Andersen noted that he and three other scientists "all find the genome inconsistent with evolutionary theory" of the coronavirus origin.

However, Andersen did an about-face, saying the possibility that the coronavirus was engineered was a "crackpot theory" after speaking with Dr. Fauci on a conference call with other international virologists.

"In three days, with no explanation as to why, you flipped your perspective entirely and began calling a theory you lent credence to only days earlier a 'crackpot theory,'" wrote Jordan and Comer. "It would appear the primary intervening event was the February 1 conference call with Dr. Fauci. We are very interested in understanding what happened on that call or what science came to light that caused such a dramatic change in your own hypothesis as to the engineering of COVID-19."

According to a USA Today report, the Feb. 1 meeting "played a pivotal role in shaping the early views of several key scientists whose published papers and public statements contributed to the shutting down of legitimate discussion about whether a laboratory in Wuhan, China, might have ignited the COVID-19 pandemic."

In the letter from the Republican lawmakers to Andersen, they highlight that Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which "has provided you with millions of dollars in taxpayer funded grants."

"The American public does not know what happened on this call, as all emails pertaining to the content of the discussion have been redacted," the letter reads. "But we do know what happened after."

The letter states, "On February 4, 2020, you sent an email to Dr. Peter Daszak, the Chief Executive Officer of EcoHealth Alliance, Inc.—another organization that had received millions of dollars in taxpayer grants from Dr. Fauci—stating: 'The main crackpot theories going around at the moment relate to this virus being somehow engineered . . . and that is demonstrably not the case.'"

Andersen deleted his Twitter account in June, following scrutiny when unearthed emails surfaced that he warned Fauci that "some of the features" of the virus "(potentially) look engineered."

The GOP lawmakers also fired off a letter to Dr. Fauci, questioning President Joe Biden's chief medical advisor about gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab.

"Dr. Fauci has repeatedly told Congress, under oath, that NIAID has not funded dangerous gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab," the Republicans declared. "However, new emails show a closer relationship between NIAID and the Wuhan lab than previously known, including NIAID funding gain-of-function research without needed oversight and reviews."

The Republicans note that the Wuhan Institute of Virology is listed as a "Key Laboratory of Special Pathogens and Biosafety" in the paper, and that the work was funded by an NIAID grant.

PBS's Yamiche Alcindor: 'White Male Conservative Voters' to Blame For New CDC Crackdown

White male conservatives are the real virus, so says PBS's Yamiche Alcindor and MSNBC's Geoff Bennett.

From NewsBusters:

Appearing on Wednesday's Katy Tur Reports on MSNBC, PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor declared that "white male conservative voters" and former President Trump are to blame for the CDC's flip-flopping on their latest guidelines that says vaccinated people should be wearing masks, but the facts said otherwise.

Guest host Geoff Bennett had asked Alcindor to comment on the "confusing" nature of the rule, but she decided to attack instead…

Transcript:

YAMICHE ALCINDOR: That's right. The Biden administration and President Biden have really underscored that they are going to follow the science and not let politics play into this, but we have to underscore that the people who benefit the most from the CDC guidance that was updated just a day ago are the same people who are least likely to follow that guidance, the people who are unvaccinated, the people who don't want to wear masks, largely Republicans, largely white male conservative voters who are looking at these guidance and thinking that there's some sort of conspiracy against their freedoms.

The original sin of this pandemic from a government standpoint was politicizing it. It was this idea that President Biden's predecessor, former President Trump, that he politicized the idea of wearing masks, that he floated all sorts of issues when it came to what could actually treat coronavirus and then finally when the vaccine that he had been pushing scientists to develop, when it was finally ready, he didn't do the real work of trying to convince his supporters to get vaccinated and left states flat-footed when it came to distributing the vaccine so the Biden administration is having to contend with the idea that they are having to tell vaccinated people, people that they told "if you'll follow the rules you'll be able to get this great thing in July which is a sense of normalcy and your masks off," that is all now being reversed.

You can see it when you talk to sources at the White House here, when I talk to sources at the White House, you can you hear the frustration in their voices, the concern in their voices because we're now nowhere near where the president wanted to be in this part of summer.

Sydneysiders await COVID update as NSW Police sternly warn not to protest lockdown

Sydneysiders have been warned they will meet with a 1,000 strong police presence today if they choose to protest lockdown restrictions.

The New South Wales government has sternly warned Sydneysiders not to participate in a second “Freedom Rally” on Saturday as the lockdown looms for another month.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and the state’s top cop, Commissioner Mick Fuller, shared the same sentiments on Friday as they urged people to stay home at the weekend.

Commissioner Fuller warned if anyone chose to breach the health orders and march “you will be met by up to 1,000 police who will be ready to deal with you”.

He further said police “will be mobile and will be waiting for you” if protestors attempted to rally in other parts of Sydney.

The order comes after thousands of demonstrators gathered in the city’s CBD last Saturday, beginning at Victoria Park in Camperdown and walking toward Town Hall shouting “freedom”.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyard earlier this week revealed police had uncovered information indicating people were planning to hold another protest at the weekend.

“We made it very clear on that day that type of protest would not be tolerated … I think the community has made it very clear that type of action would not be tolerated,” he said.

“Nothing has changed, now is not the time to conduct unauthorised protests and police are well prepared, well-resourced and we will not tolerate those types of actions”.

Large parts of the community seem to have taken the police warning on board after Crime Stoppers received more than 20,000 complaints since last week’s rally.

NSW Police Minister David Elliott reassured the public, however, Australia was not becoming “a nation of dobbers”.

“What we are [is] a nation of family lovers,” he said on Wednesday.

“We’re a nation of people that want to make sure that their families and their communities remain safe and we’re a nation that wants to make sure we get out of this pandemic, restrictions as swiftly as possible and with the minimum of fuss.”

Facebook Whistleblower Says Rejected $64k Severance to Be Able to Denounce Company

Facebook has seen a lot of backlash in various fields recently, particularly in relation to the platform allegedly allowing the spread of misinformation about coronavirus vaccines - with even the Biden administration joining the choir of critics.

An ex-data scientist who worked for Facebook said in a memo obtained by BuzzFeed News that she rejected a $64,000 severance package from the social media company to be able to ignore a non-disparagement clause, and roll out some revelations about the platform and her job experience.

In the memo, and in an interview with MIT Technology Review, Sophie Zhang, who worked as part of the 'fake engagement' management team, claimed that Facebook did little to address election interference and was involved in political manipulation.

“There was so much violating behavior worldwide that it was left to my personal assessment of which cases to further investigate, to file tasks, and escalate for prioritization afterwards,” she wrote in the memo, according to BuzzFeed News, saying that she often felt responsible for civil unrest breaking out in places she did not prioritize for action. "I have made countless decisions in this vein – from Iraq to Indonesia, from Italy to El Salvador. Individually, the impact was likely small in each case, but the world is a vast place.”

Breaking down multiple occasions when she allegedly faced the company's failure to address fake accounts, misinformation, and manipulation in different countries like India, Ukraine, Bolivia, Spain, and Brazil, Zhang revealed that she was distressed by the experience, going through a "physical and mental decline" in autumn 2019.

“In the three years I’ve spent at Facebook, I’ve found multiple blatant attempts by foreign national governments to abuse our platform on vast scales to mislead their own citizenry, and caused international news on multiple occasions,” she wrote in the memo.

After being fired from Facebook over "poor performance", she posted her memo internally during her last day at work. Facebook reportedly deleted it, but then restored access following outrage from employees.

"I know that I have blood on my hands by now," Zhang wrote in her memo. “[…] I consider myself to have been put in an impossible spot – caught between my loyalties to the company and my loyalties to the world as a whole."

According to MIT Technology Review, Facebook denied her claims and insisted that the 'fake engagement' continued her work.

"In 2016, we and those in the government and media did not fully recognize the nature and scope of foreign interference in our elections," a Facebook spokesperson said earlier, cited by The Business Insider. "Since 2017, we have removed over 150 covert influence operations originating in more than 50 counties, and a dedicated investigative team continues to vigilantly protect democracy on our platform both here and abroad."

“In All Probability” – Joe Biden When Asked if Americans Should Expect More Covid Restrictions

Joe Biden Friday afternoon answered a few questions from the South Lawn of the White House before he left for Camp David for the weekend.

A reporter asked Biden if Americans should expect more Covid restrictions.

“In all probability,” Biden said as he rattled off the number of people who received the Covid vaccine this week.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday said a federal vaccine mandate is not currently under consideration.

On Thursday Biden said he’s exploring a federal vaccine mandate.

However, Jean-Pierre was deployed to do damage control during Friday’s press briefing.

“A national vaccine requirement is not under consideration at this time,” Jean-Pierre said.

CDC releases study showing 3/4 Delta cases are among the vaccinated, says masks are the answer

The CDC has released a study backing up its decision to recommend indoor masking for both vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans. The study examined one outbreak and found three-quarters of people testing positive were vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its masking guidelines on Tuesday, urging all Americans in areas with high Covid-19 transmission to mask up when indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Mask mandates in companies, government departments, and certain local jurisdictions followed, as CDC Director Rochelle Walensky insisted the decision was made on the back of fresh scientific evidence.

The CDC released that evidence on Friday. In a study of 469 cases of Covid-19 that broke out in the resort town of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, earlier this month, 74% occurred in “fully vaccinated persons.” Four out of five patients hospitalized were fully vaccinated, and on average the inoculated had completed their two rounds of doses only 86 days before infection.

The cases studied occurred in people vaccinated primarily with Pfizer and Moderna shots, with a smaller number having received Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose jab. No one vaccine was singled out as providing better or worse protection, and none appeared to prevent symptoms from developing. Some 79% of vaccinated patients were symptomatic, the study noted.

Lab testing revealed that 90% of all the Cape Cod infections involved the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

The report lends weight to the argument that the current crop of vaccines aren’t as effective against the Delta variant, although the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) both insist that vaccination is effective against “severe disease and death” from the virus, to quote WHO technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove in a briefing earlier on Friday.

Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt nominated as US antisemitism envoy

Diverse array of Jewish groups welcome announcement, which also included tapping of New York LGBT synagogue Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum to Commission on International Religious Freedom

The White House on Friday announced its appointment of Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt to serve as US Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, drawing praise from Jewish groups across the political spectrum.

Lipstadt was a favorite for the role, and pressure had mounted on the Biden administration to fill the position amid an uptick in antisemitic incidents in recent months, and with added urgency after a swastika was found on Monday etched into an elevator in the US State Department building, near the vacant office of the antisemitism envoy.

Lipstadt, 74, is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, where she was the founding director of the Institute for Jewish Studies.

She is the author of “Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust 1933-1945”; “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier”; “The Eichmann Trial” and “Holocaust: An American Understanding” and “Antisemitism: Here and Now.”

Lipstadt is best known to the wider public from her appearance in a landmark British legal case in which she fought a libel suit brought by Holocaust denier David Irving. That experience was portrayed by superstar actor Rachel Weisz in the Hollywood feature film “Denial.”

She has also served in several roles at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, including twice as a Presidential Appointee to the Museum’s Council, and was asked by former president George W. Bush to represent the US at the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the White House noted in its biography of Lipstadt.

The historian received a BA from City College in New York and an MA and PhD from Brandeis University. She is also fluent in Hebrew.

Last year, during the election, she broke a longstanding taboo on comparing present-day American politicians to the Nazis and endorsed an ad by the Jewish Democratic Council of America likening the Trump administration to 1930s Germany. Lipstadt said Holocaust analogies were still off-limits, but she could see parallels to the rise of the Nazis.

“I would say in the attacks we’re seeing on the press, the courts, academic institutions, elected officials and even, and most chillingly, the electoral process, that this deserves comparison,” she said at the time, referring to the JDCA ad. “It’s again showing how the public’s hatred can be whipped up against Jews.”

Lipstadt will be the first nominee who will need to be confirmed by the Senate since the post was first created in 2004. Last year, Congress moved to elevate the position to ambassador level, with more funding and easier access to the secretary of state and the president. If confirmed, Lipstadt will be the fifth individual in the post.
