I'm watching "Mega Disaster: It Happened Before, It Will Happen Again"

 

And it reminded me of something that I still don't have an answer to…Why are disasters not as bad or destructive as they use to be in the late 80's/90's/early 2000's?

When was the last time we had a 100k death count disaster? When was the last time we had a CA Earthquake like 1989 where a freeway collapsed?

Or did they change the deaths to more of a slow burn instead of large numbers at once
