Gilbert Levin, scientist who sought to detect possibility of life on Mars, dies at 97

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/gilbert-levin-dead/2021/08/03/4a05b1ae-f473-11eb-9738-8395ec2a44e7_story.html

He was an engineer by training, not a physicist or biologist, and never held a staff job at NASA. Some colleagues have speculated that professional jealousy may have played a part in the dismissal of Dr. Levin’s findings by leading NASA scientists.

“Gil’s a sanitary engineer, he’s not a biologist,” Viking project manager James S. Martin told The Washington Post in 2000. “I’ve often wondered if one of his problems was that he wasn’t a member of the club.”

In recent years, more scientists have come around to thinking that Dr. Levin’s 1976 Mars experiments may have merit, and that he may be proved right in the long run.

“He never gave up and was unfailingly cheerful and positive,” Arizona State professor Davies said of Dr. Levin. “That’s a lesson for us all, from someone who devoted his life to science and remained positive about it.”

Archaeologists Resolve Enigma of Man Savaged 3,000 Years Ago in Japan

https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/archaeologists-resolve-enigma-of-man-savaged-3-000-years-ago-in-japan-1.9945494

The man was attacked by a shark while still alive; the attack had to have been fatal, judging by the 790-plus injuries he sustained. Yet somehow enough remained of him to be buried in a communal graveyard, now an archaeological site near Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, concluded Rick Schulting and J. Alyssa White of Oxford, with George Burgess of the University of Florida, Masato Nakatsukasa of Kyoto University and colleagues.

This is by far the earliest evidence we have of a shark attack on a human; it is even earlier than the known records of such events in ancient Greece. The previous record (not evidence, mind you) was from 1,000 C.E., the team says.

DOJ repatriates looted “Dream of Gilgamesh” tablet, other artifacts to Iraq

https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/08/doj-repatriates-looted-dream-of-gilgamesh-tablet-other-artifacts-to-iraq/

Hobby Lobby founder Steve Green purchased the tablet from Christie's in 2014.

By March 2020, the museum had identified some 5,000 fragments of papyri and 6,500 clay objects from Egypt and Iraq in its collection that also had questionable provenance and vowed to return them. “My goal was always to protect, preserve, study, and share cultural property with the world," Green said in a statement at the time. "That goal has not changed, but after some early missteps, I made the decision many years ago that, moving forward, I would only acquire items with reliable, documented provenance. Furthermore, if I learn of other items in the collection for which another person or entity has a better claim, I will continue to do the right thing with those items.”

It looks like he's making good on that promise. Just this past January, Green announced that the museum had returned over 8,000 clay objects to the Iraq Museum, and the DOJ said that Hobby Lobby has consented to the forfeiture of the Gilgamesh tablet. Hobby Lobby, in turn, has filed lawsuits against Christie's for selling it the Gilgamesh tablet and against an Oxford University classics professor, Dirk Obbink, who allegedly sold the company stolen Bible fragments.

Transgender Lifter Hubbard Retires After Olympic Debut

https://www.ibtimes.com/transgender-lifter-hubbard-retires-after-olympic-debut-3265784

"Age has caught up with me. In fact if we're being honest it probably caught up with me some time ago," said Hubbard, who at 43 was more than 20 years older than most of her rivals.

"My involvement in sport is probably due, if nothing else, to heroic amounts of anti-inflammatories, and it's probably time for me to start thinking about hanging up the boots and concentrating on other things in my life."

Hubbard praised the IOC for showing "moral leadership" in adopting inclusive polices that allowed her to participate at the Games.

Hubbard said she welcomed the discussion about the issues her debut had highlighted.

"I'm certain that a conversation needs to be had," she said.

"Although we have rules at the moment, they will no doubt change and evolve as more is known about transgender athletes and what that means for participation in sport."

Tyson Foods will require all U.S. employees to be vaccinated by November

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/08/03/tyson-foods-vaccine-mandate/

“Large companies are realizing that if they’re waiting on a green light or blueprint from the government to mandate vaccines, they’re going to be waiting a long time,” said Chris Allieri, a crisis management expert and founder of Mulberry & Astor, a public relations firm in New York. “This is a massive public health — and economic and societal — crisis we’re in and it’s never going to go away without some sort of vaccine mandate.”

Challenges are particularly acute for corporations with operations in multiple states juggling public health rules and case rates that differ wildly from one place to another. This has left some to pursue alternatives as a way of getting employees vaccinated: Retailers like Walmart and Dollar General are promising extra pay and cash bonuses to inoculated workers, while other firms are limiting access to office gyms, cafeterias, shuttles and free lunches to vaccinated employees.

On Tuesday, Microsoft joined the list of tech giants and other companies in revising their plans to bring workers back to the office. The company — which expects to fully open its offices Oct. 4 — will now require workers to prove they’ve been vaccinated, after previously saying it would not do so. Microsoft will also require vaccination proof for its vendors and any guests entering Microsoft’s buildings in the United States, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer Chris Capossela said in a statement.

>>Was a loser as a male and now a loser as a mentally retarded "female".

This was an eye opener was for many normies who watched the Olympics out of habit.

I saw a few reports who had daughters in sports and it opened their eyes that their daughters could have to compete with someone who has hormone and a biological DNA body that could be the waste of years their children train to compete.

There is no middle road outside of Trans having their own sporting event against Trans only.

They(IOC) drug test these athletes and for good reason, yet turn a blind eye to trans because we don't want to rock the boat. Enough of the insanity. Rock the fucking boat.

Test them for DNA. DNA you are a man, you compete as a man. DNA as woman, you compete as woman. The End.

Tucker Carlson makes light of Gov. Cuomo sexual harassment report, calls him 'Governor Creep-o'

https://www.insider.com/tucker-carlson-jokes-about-cuomo-investigation-2021-8

"Now, we didn't show the tape but we just want to be totally clear that the video of the slideshow that Andrew Cuomo put on the screen showed him hugging Al Gore but not reaching up under Gore's shirt to grab his man boobs," Carlson said, referencing Cuomo reaching up the shirt of his executive assistant.

Carlson then had former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes on as a guest to provide her analysis of the situation, asking her, "How would you assess what we've just learned about Governer Creep-o?"
