They were called subscription schools.

The men of the community or area would build a small, one-room schoolhouse, hire a young man or woman from the area, and then everyone with children paid a subscription price for the school year for each child. It was all voluntary. School was not manditory then.

That's what freedom looks like.

I beleive the modern American schools were created on the Austrian model. This was after Marx-Hegel and the Communist manifesto. The American Civil War was just after the birth of Communism.

Yes, that came later and is the current model/philosophy, but the origins of the manditory school system in the US was from an earlier 1800s Austrian model. Kindergarten was a part of the Frankfurt model. Get 'em young to impress their minds. Daycare literally raises the child from birth now. This is all planned.
