AT LEAST six of the Democrats have tested positive for Covid and spread the virus to White House staffers and Pelosi aides.

The Democrat lawmakers shamelessly begged for care packages and donations on top of what they already receive per diem.

Now a couple of the gals have taken off and jet-setted to Portugal.

The Texas House Democratic Caucus could not account Tuesday for two of the members who broke quorum and fled for Washington, D.C., over Republicans’ priority elections bill, while a Texas Monthly reporter said the members were on vacation in Portugal.

State Reps. Julie Johnson of Farmers Branch and Jessica González of Dallas were not with other House Democrats on Tuesday in the nation’s capital, according to a person familiar with the situation. On Tuesday evening, Texas Monthly reporter Jonathan Tilove tweeted that he “can confirm [Johnson] and her wife & [González] and her fiancé are in Portugal for a vacation they had been planning, with non-refundable tickets, for a year-and-a-half.”

In a text exchange though with the San Antonio Express-News on Tuesday evening, González referred to the Portugal trip as “rumors” and said “no one has shown proof.”

“These are rumors, period,” she said. “End of story.”

TX Judge Sides With Authoritarian DOJ, Temporarily Blocks Abbott’s Executive Order That Bans Ground Transport of Illegals; Issues Restraining Order

On Tuesday, a federal district judge granted a DOJ request for a temporary restraining order that blocks Governor Abbott and the state of Texas from enforcing a new executive order that bans the transportation of illegal immigrants by anyone other than law enforcement officers.

The restraining order will remain in effect until an official hearing set for August 13th.

The situation on the border is worse than it has ever been before. Abbott issued his order last Wednesday because of the “countless” number of untested illegals “who pose a risk of carrying Covid-19” that were being released by federal agents into the state. The order instructs law enforcement officers to pull over vehicles that were suspected of transporting illegal aliens after they had been released from custody, escort anyone who shouldn’t be in the US back to a port of entry, and even impound the vehicle.

This posed a serious problem to the Biden Administration’s open-border agenda. The federal government spends hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on non-profits and contractors for the daily transport of illegals using vans and busses.

The mandate was immediately met with a threat of legal action by Merrick Garland at the DOJ, who filed a lawsuit against Texas on Friday.

Abbott argues that his executive order is necessary to protect the people of Texas and blames Biden for the crisis, saying that he doesn’t enforce immigration laws that are already in place. Texas AG Ken Paxton agreed and called his order “much needed’ and “perfectly legal.”

Despite this administration’s clear disregard for any of the federal immigration laws that are currently in place, Texas Judge Kathleen Cardone claims in her ruling that if the Governor’s order were enforced it would be an “obstacle” to federal immigration law and would be directly regulating the federal government’s operations.

She also makes it clear that illegal immigrants who shouldn’t be here take priority over American citizens.

“The executive order causes irreparable injury to the United States and to individuals the United States is charged with protecting, jeopardizing the health and safety of non-citizens in federal custody, risking the safety of federal law enforcement personnel and their families, and exacerbating the spread of Covid-19.”

The last line – exacerbating the spread of Covid-19 – is especially ridiculous, considering the mass releases of untested, unvaccinated invaders happening daily. The illegals who test positive are even being released.

Pennsylvania Democrats Push Legislation to Require Photo ID to Buy Ammo

Pennsylvania Democrats are pushing legislation requiring a photo ID to purchase firearm ammunition.

These are the same radicals who argue voter ID is racist.

A bill requiring photo identification to purchase firearm ammunition in Pennsylvania is intended to keep loaded guns out of the hands of minors, according to its sponsor, Democratic state Rep. Brian Kirkland.

Current law prohibits ammunition from being sold to anyone the seller has reasonable cause to believe is younger than 18 or 21 depending on the type of ammunition. However, sellers are not required to verify the buyer’s age by asking to see an ID.

The legislation would require all ammunition buyers in Pennsylvania to provide an official form of photographic identification with every purchase of ammunition. It would reinforce current law, ensuring ammunition is not sold to children, without infringing on any individual’s Second Amendment rights, Kirkland said.

“This is very safe legislation, “Kirkland told The Epoch Times. “I don’t think this is making it harder for anyone to get a gun. You get carded to buy alcohol or tobacco. There is no accountability for the person selling ammunition.”

Despite Deadly Results the FDA will Fast Track Pfizer COVID Vaccine Approval by Early Sept. — Will Allow States and Businesses to Begin their Forced Vaccinations

The VAERS database contains information on unverified reports of adverse events (illnesses, health problems and/or symptoms) following immunization with US-licensed vaccines. The CDC government website links to VAERS platform. The elites have yet to offer a credible explanation on how these thousands of reported deaths are illegitimate.

There have been over 400,000 adverse reactions reported to the COVID vaccine according to the VAERS website.

But this hasn’t stopped the Biden-Obama government from pushing the FDA to give full approval to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

That way they can force Americans to get the vaccine to participate in public life.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aiming to give full approval to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine by early September, according to The New York Times.

The two-dose vaccine, which Pfizer developed in collaboration with German-based BioNTech, was granted emergency use authorization by the FDA last November.

It is one of just three COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. stockpile, along with the two-shot vaccine from Moderna and the single-dose version developed by Johnson & Johnson.

The newspaper says the FDA is accelerating its normal timetable to grant full approval to the two-dose vaccine as the United States undergoes a new surge of coronavirus infections and hospitalizations caused primarily by the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.

The recent surge of new infections is mainly among people who have not gotten vaccinated. The Times quotes recent polls by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a health care research group, which found that three of every 10 unvaccinated people in the U.S. said they more likely would take a fully approved vaccine.

The surge has prompted a growing number of public and private entities to issue mandatory vaccinations for all of its employees, including an order last week by U.S. President Joe Biden for all employees of the federal government.

'For $1/Day'… Double-Blind Ivermectin Study Reveals COVID Patients Recover More Quickly, Are Less Infectious

A double-blind Israeli study has concluded that Ivermectin, an inexpensive anti-parasitic widely used since 1981, reduces both the duration and infectiousness of Covid-19, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The study, conducted by Prof. Eli Schwartz, founder of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Disease at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, looked at some 89 eligible volunteers over the age of 18 who had tested positive for coronavirus, and were living in state-run Covid-19 hotels. After being divided into two groups, 50% received ivermectin, and 50% received a placebo. Each patient was given the drug for three days in a row, an hour before eating.

83% of participants were symptomatic at recruitment. 13.5% of patients had comorbidities of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, hypertension or cancer. The median age of the patients was 35, ranging from 20 to 71-years-old.

Results

Treatment was discontinued on the third day, and patients were monitored every two days thereafter. By day six, 72% of those treated with ivermectin tested negative for the virus, vs. 50% of those who received the placebo. Meanwhile, just 13% of ivermectin patients were able to infect others after six days compared to 50% of the placebo group - nearly four times as many.

Hospitalizations

Three patients in the placebo group were admitted to hospitals for respiratory symptoms, while one ivermectin patient was hospitalized for shortness of breath the day the study began - only to be discharged a day later and "sent back to the hotel in good condition," according to the study.

"Our study shows first and foremost that ivermectin has antiviral activity," said Schwartz, adding "It also shows that there is almost a 100% chance that a person will be noninfectious in four to six days, which could lead to shortening isolation time for these people. This could have a huge economic and social impact."

The study, which appeared on the MedRxiv preprint server and has not yet been peer-reviewed. That said, Schwartz pointed out that similar studies - 'though not all of them conducted to the same double-blind and placebo standards as his' - also showed favorable results for the drug.

French firefighters’ & hospital unions declare strikes against ‘unconstitutional’ vaccination mandate

Two French unions have called for strikes against the compulsory vaccination of firefighters, healthcare workers, and caregivers. They say the measure violates fundamental rights.

One of the leading French firefighters’ unions, FA/SPP-PATS, which boasts 7,000 members, said it will go on strike starting Monday unless changes are made to the recent law on compulsory vaccination of certain employees.

“The obligatory vaccination of firefighters under [the threat] of penalty violates the constitution,” the union said in a statement.

“Our union does not oppose vaccination,” the organization’s spokesperson, Andre Goretti, told BFM TV. “But the conditions, under which it is being imposed on the professional level, with [the threat of] financial and other sanctions – that’s where we disagree.”

The hospital and caregivers’ union, SUD Sante Sociaux, also called for a strike and protests against the measure which it labelled “a new attack on labor law.”

According to the legislation, which was approved by parliament late last month, firefighters, medical workers, caregivers, and certain soldiers have until September 15 to get vaccinated or face sanctions. The controversial provision containing the vaccination mandate will be examined by the country’s Constitutional Council on Thursday.

The government has been pushing the population to get vaccinated in greater numbers amid the spread of the more contagious Delta variant of the virus.

Starting from August 9, people will be barred from restaurants, cafes, and long-distance transportation unless they have a health pass. The pass is already required for museums, cinemas, and other cultural venues with a capacity of more than 50 people.

These restrictions, along with the vaccination mandate, sparked protests across the country. More than 200,000 people participated in demonstrations across France on Saturday.

A group of uniformed firefighters was seen marching in a protest column in the southern city of Nice on Saturday, where around 6,500 people rallied against the government’s restrictive Covid-19 response.

Charles-Ange Ginesy, the head of the Alpes-Maritimes region and president of the regional firefighters’ board of directors, told BFM TV that he was “very disappointed” after seeing uniformed firefighters participating in a protest.

“The right to protest is a right that belongs to each of us. On the other hand, they wore their uniforms, which surprised me a lot,” the official said, expressing hope that “the controller-general will be able to make them understand that such attitude should not be repeated.”

Only a group of 20 to 30 marched with the protesters, compared to the 3,800 firefighters in the region, Ginesy said.

French civil servants are typically bound by the ‘duty of reserve’, meaning they must show restraint and moderation when expressing person opinions.

The firefighters’ union spokesperson, Andre Goretti, meanwhile, defended his colleagues. “There are individual choices that are not put to question by our union,” he said. “It is an expression of a citizen. A firefighter – before being a professional firefighter – is a citizen.”

Authorities have made several concessions following the outrage, such as lowering the fines for businesses that do not check for health passes.

WHO pushes for global moratorium on Covid-19 booster shots, calls on influencers to spread the word

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on nations to not administer Covid booster shots until at least the end of September, in an effort to first ensure a base level of vaccine coverage across the globe.

Speaking on Wednesday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said vaccine producers need to “prioritize” the COVAX facility, the global Covid-19 shot sharing initiative. The UN health agency is one of the director organizations of the program.

He stated that there needs to be an “urgent reversal” of current trends so the majority of vaccines are rediverted from high-income countries to poorer nations.

“Accordingly, WHO is calling for a moratorium on boosters until at least the end of September, to enable at least 10% of the population of every country to be vaccinated,” he stated.

Tedros called on “everyone with influence,” including Olympic athletes, investors, business leaders, and faith leaders to support the WHO in their quest for a moratorium.

He noted that while there was concern about the Delta variant, which may reduce the effectiveness of some vaccines, there were multiple ways of slowing the spread of the virus.

The WHO chief noted that high-income countries have by now administered around 100 vaccine doses per 100 people, while low-income nations have only administered 1.5 doses per 100 people. He claimed that his previous warnings about vaccine inequality went unheeded.

Last week, Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, kicked off the state’s booster shot campaign for over-60s by receiving his own third dose of Covid vaccine. Other nations, including the UK and US, have announced plans for booster programs in the autumn.

British study shows children unlikely to contract severe Covid as UK reportedly set to begin vaccinating teens

A new study has found that prolonged illness from Covid among minors is uncommon, reaffirming data showing that the virus is rarely deadly for children. The findings come as the UK prepares to start giving teens the shot.

The research, conducted by King's College London scientists, revealed that children aged between 5 and 17 who test positive for coronavirus typically recover in less than a week.

Headaches and tiredness were the most common symptoms observed, according to their paper, which was published on Tuesday in the Lancet.

Using data provided by parents to a non-profit group that supports Covid research, the study examined medical information collected from 1,734 minors who developed symptoms and tested positive for the virus between September 2020 and February 2021.

The researchers said they were “reassured” to find that fewer than one in 20 of those with the virus exhibited symptoms for four weeks or more. Incidences in which children showed symptoms for more than eight weeks were even rarer, being recorded in one in 50 cases.

The scientists also examined cases where children had symptoms but tested negative for coronavirus. Only a handful of subjects remained symptomatic for 28 days or more.

The main takeaway from the study is that it’s uncommon for children to suffer from prolonged illness after getting Covid, Emma Duncan, professor of clinical endocrinology at King's College London, said. She also stressed that it would be ill-advised to focus only on Covid-linked sickness among children.

“We need to be looking after all children who have protracted illnesses, irrespective of whether that illness is Covid-19 or anything else,” the researcher noted.

Former UK defence official behind classified dossier bus stop leak was tipped to become NATO ambassador – reports

Media sources have identified the senior UK official who mislaid classified defence papers – detailing sensitive Crimean coast operations – as Angus Lapsley. He was apparently being groomed as the country’s next envoy to NATO.

The former Ministry of Defence (MoD) director general’s blunder led to a 50-page dossier being found in a “soggy heap” at a bus stop in Kent in June, prompting both fears of espionage by “adversaries” and ridicule of the UK’s intelligence and security establishment.

The documents – one of which was rated at the highest ‘Secret: UK Eyes Only’ classification – went public after a passerby handed them to the BBC, which published a report detailing some of their contents. Last month, an MoD probe had pinned the blame on a single public servant but did not identify the individual.

On Tuesday, The Guardian cited two anonymous government sources to reveal that Lapsley – who was director general strategy & international at the time of the incident – was responsible.

Despite the gaffe, the paper reported that his appointment as NATO ambassador was now “unlikely, but not definitely ruled out”. In his MoD position, he was responsible for “defence policy on NATO and the general Euro-Atlantic area.”

Facebook executive helped Cuomo smear sex-harassment accuser: AG report

A top communications manager at Facebook helped Gov. Andrew Cuomo fight sexual misconduct allegations — including by helping leak confidential files about accuser Lindsey Boylan and by participating in regular discussions about Cuomo’s communications strategy, according to the New York attorney general’s bombshell investigation.

Dani Lever — who had worked in Cuomo’s press operation since 2014 but left in August 2020 to join Facebook as a communications manager — played a key role in Cuomo’s communications strategy even while working for Facebook, according to the investigation released Tuesday.

In December 2020, former Cuomo staffer Lindsey Boylan became the first of several women to accuse the governor of sexual harassment. Hours later, Cuomo communications director Rich Azzopardi decided to send Boylan’s confidential personnel files to several journalists in what investigators called an attempt to “discredit and disparage” her.

According to the attorney general’s report, Lever helped Cuomo’s staffers disseminate the files — even though she had already been working at Facebook for months.

“Ms. Lever coordinated with some of the reporters who received the documents to let them know that the Executive Chamber would be sending them,” reads the report.

The smear attempt came amid Lever’s broader participation in Cuomo’s defense as part of a “team of advisors from within and outside the Chamber [who] had ongoing and regular discussions about how to respond to the allegations publicly” that also included Cuomo’s CNN host brother Chris, according to the attorney general. Lever’s name appears 25 times in the attorney general’s report.

Reached by phone, Lever told The Post she could not talk because she had to attend a meeting. Lever and Facebook’s broader press team did not immediately reply to questions sent by email, including about whether Lever had Facebook’s permission to work with the governor.

Mainstream Media Outlet Actually Apologizes for Fear-Driven COVID Coverage

The editor-in-chief of Germany’s top newspaper Bild has apologized for the news outlet’s fear-driven coverage of COVID, specifically to children who were told “that they were going to murder their grandma.”

In a speech delivered to camera, Julian Reichelt said sorry for Bild’s coverage which was “like poison” and “made you feel like you were a mortal danger to society.”

Reichelt directed his main sentiment towards children who have been terrorized by fearmongering media coverage which has caused child depression and suicides to soar across the world.

“To the millions of children in this country for whom our society is responsible, I want to express here what neither our government nor our Chancellor dares to tell you. We ask you to forgive us,” he said.

“Forgive us for this policy which, for a year and a half, has made you victims of violence, neglect, isolation, and loneliness.”

“We persuaded our children that they were going to murder their grandma if they dared to be what they are, children. Or if they met their friends. None of this has been scientifically proven.”

Julian Reichelt, the editor-in-chief of @BILD – one of the largest newspapers in Germany, apologized to the children of Germany for the COVID-19 coverage in his newspaper that made them “victims of neglect, isolation and loneliness.”

“When a state steals the rights of a child, it must prove that by doing so it protects him against concrete and imminent danger. This proof has never been provided. It has been replaced by propaganda presenting the child as a vector of the pandemic.”

Reichelt noted how moderate voices who attempted to offer calmer perspectives on the pandemic “were never invited to the expert table” and urged viewers “don’t believe this lie,” when encountering alarmist proclamations from the government.

The journalist called on authorities to open schools and sports halls instead of polling stations, warning that those who imposed brutal lockdown measures, “will have on their conscience and will leave in the history books, a multitude of innocent souls.”

Bild has a daily circulation of 1.24 million copies and is the best-selling newspaper in Europe, adding even more weight to this story.

Pentagon Identifies Officer Slain in Attack as Officials Seek Clues

WASHINGTON—Federal investigators were digging Wednesday into the background of a Georgia man who officials say fatally stabbed a Pentagon police officer at a transit station outside the building before being shot and killed himself.

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency identified the slain officer as George Gonzalez, a New York native and Army veteran who served in Iraq and joined the police force three years ago. He died after being attacked Tuesday morning on a bus platform outside the Pentagon.

The burst of violence temporarily placed the U.S. military headquarters on lockdown and jangled the nerves of a region already primed to be on high alert for violence and potential intruders outside federal government buildings.

The FBI was leading the investigation into the violence and the suspect, identified by multiple law enforcement officials as Austin William Lanz, 27, of Georgia. The authorities were examining Lanz’s background, including his criminal history, jail records, financial information and any online accounts as they tried to identify a potential motive for the attack, a law enforcement official said.

Gonzalez was ambushed by Lanz, who ran at him and stabbed him in the neck, according to two law enforcement officials who could not discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Responding officers then shot and killed Lanz.

Lanz had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in October 2012 but was “administratively separated” less than a month later and never earned the title Marine, the Corps said in a statement.

He was arrested in April in Cobb County, Georgia, on criminal trespassing and burglary charges, according to online court records. The same day, a separate criminal case was filed against Lanz with six additional charges, including two counts of aggravated battery on police, a count of making a terrorist threat, and a charge for rioting in a penal institution, the records show.

A judge reduced his bond in May to $30,000 and released him, imposing some conditions, including that he not ingest illegal drugs and that he undergo a mental health evaluation. The charges against him were still listed as pending. A spokesman for the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Lanz had been previously held at the agency’s detention center but referred all other questions to the FBI’s field office in Washington.

An attorney who represented Lanz in the Georgia cases didn’t immediately respond to a phone message and email seeking comment, and messages left with family members at Lanz’s home in the Atlanta suburb of Acworth, Georgia, were not immediately returned.

At a Pentagon news conference Tuesday, the PFPA chief, Woodrow Kusse declined to provide even basic information about how the violence had unfolded. He would only say that an officer had been attacked and that “gunfire was exchanged.”

Kusse and other officials declined to rule out terrorism or provide any other potential motive, saying they didn’t want to “compromise the ongoing investigation.” But Kusse said “we are not actively looking for another suspect at this time.”

Fauci: Biden Admin ‘Going to Need Local Mandates’ on COVID-19 Vaccines

Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the White House COVID-19 advisors, on Tuesday shifted the goalposts on herd immunity and said that he wants to see as many as 90 percent of American adults vaccinated against the virus in the near future.

About 70 percent of U.S. adults have received at least one shot, according to federal data. But Fauci suggested that when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants its final approval to COVID-19 vaccines, there will be more pressure to get people vaccinated.

Speaking during a news conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Fauci said that he would “settle for 70 percent or 80 percent, but I’d love to see 90 percent,” describing the likely FDA approval as a “game-changer.” Currently, the COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed and administered under the agency’s emergency use authorization.

Later in the news conference, Fauci said that the Biden administration will need to rely on vaccine mandates at the local level.

“To get to the 93 million unvaccinated people,” he said, “we are going to need local mandates.”

Fauci said that some “enterprises” are going to “[feel] much more confident in local mandates for the vaccines.”

When the FDA authorization is handed down, he said, “You’re going to see more universities … places of businesses, once they get the cover of the mandate … you’ll start seeing more vaccines. Because if you get the majority of the people vaccinated, we wouldn’t be having this conversation now.”

Over the past week or so, the administration has ramped up its rhetoric around vaccines, including a mandate that federal workers either get the shot or be tested regularly for COVID-19. Disney, Facebook, Google, and Walmart’s corporate office also said that employees need to receive them.

New York City, meanwhile, became the first city in the United States to announce a vaccine passport-type system for restaurants, gyms, and theaters. Starting in mid-September, those businesses will have to require that customers show whether they’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19 by either using their Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) card or a New York state or New York City app on their phones to show their vaccination status.

Vaccine mandates or passports have been criticized by civil liberties groups and some conservatives as a potential invasion of privacy, and may potentially create a segregated society of vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

Various officials and corporate executives said the vaccine requirements are due to the Delta COVID-19 variant, which researchers say is fast spreading.

Former Obama Official Demands ‘a No-Fly List for Unvaccinated Adults’

Former Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security under President Obama Juliette Kayyem called Tuesday for the Biden administration to restrict the unvaccinated from flying by placing them on a no-fly list.

Kayyem claimed in the Atlantic that “a no-fly list for unvaccinated adults is an obvious step that the federal government should take” due to TSA PreCheck, which “divide[s] passengers into categories according to how much of a threat the government thinks they pose.”

At the time of publication, the headline for the piece echoed this line, stating bluntly: “Unvaccinated People Belong on the No-Fly List.” The headline has since been changed to a more ambiguous sentence: “Unvaccinated People Need to Bear the Burden.”

“If you submit to heightened scrutiny in advance,” Kayyem said, “TSA PreCheck lets you go through security without taking off your shoes; a no-fly list keeps certain people off the plane entirely.”

Flying is not a right, and the case for restricting it to vaccinated people is straightforward: The federal government is the sole entity that can regulate the terms and conditions of airline safety. And although air-filtration systems and mask requirements make transmission of the coronavirus unlikely during any given passenger flight, infected people can spread it when they leave the airport and take off their mask. The whole point of international-travel bans is to curb infections in the destination country; to protect itself, the United States still has many such restrictions in place. Beyond limiting the virus’s flow from hot spots to the rest of the country, allowing only vaccinated people on domestic flights will change minds, too.

Kayyem also suggests the “holdouts” with “a variety of motivations” include 41 percent of the unvaccinated that said “a prohibition on airline travel would get them closer to their shots.”

Kayyem champions shaming the unvaccinated, who should “face scorn among their peer group” and “may even be happy to have an excuse to protect themselves,” along with celebrating Broadway, Disney, and Walmart for forcing the unvaccinated to give up “certain societal benefits” to practice their their individuality and freedom of choice.

“Amid a global health crisis,” Kayyem continues, “people who defy public-health guidance are not, and do not deserve to be, a protected class.”

The former assistant secretary’s diktats align with President Joe Biden’s shaming and punishing of those who refuse to become vaccinated.

For instance, Biden told churchgoers in April they were being ungodly if they did not receive a vaccine.

“I think this is the Godly thing to do. Protect your brother and sister,” he stated. “That’s what this is about. It’s about protecting people.”

On July 2, Biden indicated black Tuskegee airmen “were almost like guinea pigs,” when answering a question about vaccine hesitancy in the black community:

You know, you go back just to — even World War II, African-Americans were used as experimental — they were almost like guinea pigs in terms of — they were — anyway, it — and your mom and dad remember that and your grandparents remember that.

Ilhan Omar votes for bill to continue unconditional US aid to Israel

The failure of 'the Squad' to unite is seen as a missed opportunity to hold Israel accountable for its crimes against Palestinians

The vote to approve the annual US Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Funding Bill, which amongst other things green-lights Washington's yearly $3.3 billion unconditional aid to Israel, threw a major surprise this year.

Democrat representatives Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Presley, Lee Bowman and Pramila Jayapal split with fellow Democrats, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cori Bush in securing a narrow victory for the ruling party. All are members of a progressive group of lawmakers known as "The Squad", famed for their highly critical stance on Israel. They have previously called to end the many decades of America's unconditional aid to the occupation state.

With the bill passing narrowly – 217 for and 212 against – the "Squads" failure to vote as one is seen as a missed opportunity to strike what would have been seen as a major blow to Washington's unconditional support for Israel, especially as they have been part of a long campaign to align US foreign policy to progressive values and international law.

In April the likes of Omar and Tlaib were amongst several Democrat members of Congress to introduce a bill which conditions US aid to Israel on human rights. The bill specifically demanded that Israel should not be allowed to use American taxpayers' money to kill, torture, imprison, displace or otherwise harm Palestinian children and families.

Omar also joined fellow members of the progressive camp in seeking to block a $735 million emergency arms sale to Israel approved by the administration of US President Joe Biden days before Israel's 11-day bombardment of Gaza which killed more than 250 people including women and children. The sale should not be completed "while crimes against humanity are being committed with our backing," Omar said at the time.

Gene Splicing Pathogens to Make Biological Weapons Is Illegal — But Nobody Is Enforcing the Law

The 1972 Biological Weapons Convention prohibited bioengineering pathogens to create biological weapons, but because nations have been unable to agree on how to strengthen the treaty, some countries are still doing the research and stockpiling bioweapons.

Brandeis University scientists are making dramatic progress with techniques for “gene splicing” — modifying the genetic makeup of organisms.

This work includes bioengineering pathogens for medical research, techniques that also can be used to create deadly biological weapons. It’s an overlap that’s helped fuel speculation that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was bioengineered at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology and that it subsequently “escaped” through a lab accident to produce the COVID-19 pandemic.

The world already has a legal foundation to prevent gene splicing for warfare: the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention. Unfortunately, nations have been unable to agree on how to strengthen the treaty. Some countries have also pursued bioweapons research and stockpiling in violation of it.

As a member of President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council from 1996 to 2001, I had a firsthand view of the failure to strengthen the convention. From 2009 to 2013, as President Barack Obama’s White House coordinator for weapons of mass destruction, I led a team that grappled with the challenges of regulating potentially dangerous biological research in the absence of strong international rules and regulations.

The history of the Biological Weapons Convention reveals the limits of international attempts to control research and development of biological agents.

The UK first proposed a global biological weapons ban in 1968.

Reasoning that bioweapons had no useful military or strategic purpose given the awesome power of nuclear weapons, the U.K. had ended its offensive bioweapons program in 1956. But the risk remained that other countries might consider developing bioweapons as a poor man’s atomic bomb.

In the original British proposal, countries would have to identify facilities and activities with potential bioweapons applications. They would also need to accept on-site inspections by an international agency to verify these facilities were being used for peaceful purposes.

These negotiations gained steam in 1969 when the Nixon administration ended America’s offensive biological weapons program and supported the British proposal. In 1971, the Soviet Union announced its support — but only with the verification provisions stripped out. Since it was essential to get the USSR on board, the U.S. and UK agreed to drop those requirements.

In 1972 the treaty was finalized. After gaining the required signatures, it took effect in 1975.

Under the convention, 183 nations have agreed not to “develop, produce, stockpile or otherwise acquire or retain” biological materials that could be used as weapons. They also agreed not to stockpile or develop any “means of delivery” for using them. The treaty allows “prophylactic, protective or other peaceful” research and development — including medical research.

However, the treaty lacks any mechanism to verify that countries are complying with these obligations.
