Mike Carey, a former coal executive, easily toppled a crowded field, taking over18,600 votes, according to a preliminary vote count late Tuesday.
State Rep. Jeff LaRe, backed by former Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), who vacated the seat earlier this year, was in second but had managed only6,724 votes.
