River Fire: Residents in Nevada, Placer counties ordered to evacuate

 

Evacuation orders have been issued for residents in Placer and Nevada counties because of a wildfire burning in the area, officials said.

 

Known as the River Fire, it has burned at least 1,000 acres, Cal Fire said. The fire is located north of Applegate and west of Colfax.

 

The fire is burning on both sides of the Bear River has extended into Nevada County, Cal Fire said.

 

Aircraft are in the area to assist in controlling the fire by dropping water and retardant, Cal Fire said. According to a tweet from Cal Fire's Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, the incident commander has asked for crews to protect homes and structures under immediate threat from the fire.

 

The plume of smoke can be seen from downtown Sacramento, which is at least 45 miles away.

The on and off ramps for both directions of Interstate 80 at the State Route 174 separation and Canyon Way/Placer Hills Road

EVACUATION POINTS

Nevada County

 

For those evacuating and heading north, residents can head to Nevada Union High School on 11761 Ridge Road.

 

For those evacuating and heading south, residents can head to Bear River High School 11130 Magnolia Road in Grass Valley.

 

Placer County

 

Evacuated residents who have pets can go to the Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall at 100 East Street in Auburn. The Gold Country Fairgrounds & Event Center at 209 Fairgate Road is also open for residents after 5 p.m., but they are not accepting pets.

 

AREAS ACCEPTING ANIMALS

Nevada County

 

The Nevada County Fairgrounds has opened to accept animals evacuated from the fire.
