Former veteran NYPD Detective Tom Nerney has died, friends said. He was 77.
Nerney of Glendale, Queens, went to Jamaica Hospital on Saturday after waking up with chest pains, said a pal, retired Detective Dan Austin.
โHe was just a great guy,โ Austin said. โI just got an e-mail from him, and everything was fine. Then, the guy wakes up in the morning, heโs got chest pains, and then heโs gone.
โTommy had the NYPD โ that was his family.โ
Nerney retired in 2002 from the departmentโs Major Case Squad. He later ran his own investigative firm.
Austin recalled responding to a church in Midtown with Nerney in the 1990s after gang-bangers crashed a birthday party there.
He said the members had ditched their guns anywhere possible when cops showed up, including in speakers and toilets. There was also a large pot of chili on a table, he said.
โI said, โTommy, what do you think is in that pot?โโ Austin recalled. โHe said, โI donโt know. You wanna find out?โ He dumped the whole thing on the floor, and all these knives and guns were in there. It was amazing how many weapons they had.โ
Nerney lived in Glendale his whole life. He left no surviving family, said a worker with the Leo Kearns Funeral Home, which is handling his interment.
A viewing is scheduled for Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Leo Kearns, 6140 Woodhaven Blvd., Rego Park, Queens. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, 8317 78th Ave., Glendale, Queens.
