Its true that many who call themselves "Christians" today are hypocrites and Christ himself was not fond of hypocrisy, but the Gospels were all about subordination of state authority to the rise of the truthful Individual.
A truthful individual that challenged the false authorities of his day:
the moneychangers,
the Levites,
the Pharisees.
