Bloodied St. Vincent PM hospitalized with head injury after rioter hurls rock amid chaotic protest against vaccine mandate

The prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was hospitalized after he was struck in the head by a stone during a protest against a proposed vaccine mandate, with images online showing him bloodied by the injury.

PM Ralph Gonsalves met hundreds of raucous demonstrators as he arrived at parliament on Thursday afternoon, with protesters gathering to denounce a bill that would compel Covid-19 shots for the Caribbean nation. Gonsalves’ office confirmed in a statement that he was “physically assaulted and wounded by opposition demonstrators while attempting to enter the House of Assembly.”

“Approximately 200 demonstrators, responding to a call to action from the Leader of the Opposition, picketed the parliament and blocked the entrance to the building,” it said, adding that when the PM was unable to enter parliament in his vehicle, he attempted to do so on foot.

An opposition demonstrator then hurled a projectile at the prime minister, which struck him in the head, inches above the temple. The prime minister, bleeding profusely, was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital with his security detail.

Videos from the protest have also made the rounds, with Gonsalves’ security team seen escorting him away from the parliament building amid a chaotic crowd. Other clips also showed protesters elsewhere on the island, some lighting fires in the streets.

Mass protests kick off in Paris after France’s constitutional court approves controversial Covid legislation

Reinvigorated mass protests kicked off in the French capital shortly after the country’s top court upheld controversial legislation which makes a coronavirus ‘health pass’ mandatory for the general public.

Hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of Paris on Thursday, heading towards the Constitutional Court. The judicial body ruled on the Covid legislation package earlier in the day.

The court rejected some parts of the proposed law, including a provision allowing French authorities to enforce mandatory quarantine on any person who tested positive for the virus. However, the court upheld the majority of the legislation, including the compulsory vaccination of caregivers and the ‘health pass’, as constitutional.

A large crowd of protesters gathered by the court, expressing their anger over the ruling. The court itself was cordoned off, with a heavy police presence in the area, as shown in footage from the scene shared on social media.

The protesters chanted various slogans, including “Macron, we don’t want your pass,” referring to one of the most-criticized provisions of the law. The legislation, expected to be enacted on Monday, is set to make the so-called ‘health passes’ mandatory in France, barring anyone without them from restaurants, bars and other public venues.

The measure, tabled by the government back in July, has triggered wide debates as well as mass protests that have rocked the country for three consecutive weekends. Its critics have accused the government of steering the country into a “dictatorship” and depriving people of their basic rights.

South Africa reshuffles government in response to riots: Health & Finance ministers out, Security placed under presidency

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced major changes to the government of South Africa in response to last month’s unrest, abolishing the Ministry of State Security and accepting the resignation of health and finance ministers.

Ramaphosa announced changes to the National Executive on Thursday evening, citing the need to effectively administer Covid-19 vaccination, rebuild the economy and “ensure peace and stability in the wake of the recent outbreak of violence and destruction in parts of the country.”

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has resigned, and will be replaced by Joe Phaahla, a Limpopo native who was involved in organizing the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Finance Minister Tito Mboweni was also “excused” from his job, which he took over in October 2018, and will be replaced by Enoch Godongwana.

Ramaphosa said Mboweni “effectively and ably steered National Treasury through extremely difficult economic times, providing stability and instilling confidence” and thanked him for his service.

In a major change, Ramaphosa abolished the Ministry of State Security and placed the State Security Agency under the presidency, “to ensure that the country’s domestic and foreign intelligence services more effectively enable the President to exercise his responsibility to safeguard the security and integrity of the nation.”

Ncediso Goodenough ‘Zizi’ Kodwa will serve as the deputy minister under the presidency, in charge of security and intelligence. A member of the leadership of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, Kodwa was previously deputy minister for State Security under Ayanda Dlodlo – who was reshuffled back into the Ministry of Public Service and Administration.

The reshuffle comes after the week-long riots in the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces last month, which claimed at least 337 lives and wrought widespread destruction to the economy and infrastructure of South Africa. More than 3,400 people have been arrested in connection with the unrest, sparked by the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma on charges of contempt of court.

A three-member panel has been tasked to conduct “a thorough and critical review of our preparedness and the shortcomings in our response” to the riots, Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa concluded Thursday night’s announcement by declaring that his government is “unwavering in our determination to build a capable state, one which is ably led and which effectively serves the needs of the people.”

Rebuilding the country’s economy and society “requires urgency and focus” as well as “cooperation among all sectors of society and the active involvement of all South Africans,” he added.

Twitter howls with laughter after Rep. Liz Cheney claims her father Dick Cheney is ‘troubled’ by direction of GOP

Liz Cheney, congresswoman and daughter of ex-VP Dick Cheney, has claimed her father is “troubled” by the Republican Party’s direction after four years of Donald Trump. Social media whipped out a tiny violin to serenade the pair.

“My dad is deeply troubled about where our party is, deeply troubled about where the country is,” the younger Cheney declared at the Aspen Institute on Wednesday.

Lest anyone’s stomach remain unturned, she continued that her father, whom many consider to be a driving force and key architect behind the War on Terror and all the atrocities that accompanied it, was also “just a tremendous source of advice and guidance and wisdom for me.”

Social media users were not amused at the apparent umbrage taken on behalf of the man they recalled as an unapologetic war criminal, reminding the newly virtuous ex-VP that he’d literally gotten away with murder during the George W. Bush administration.

Infectious diseases expert who predicted Sydney's slide into lockdown makes devastating claim city will NEVER have 'zero Covid cases' - and says NSW residents are in for a MASSIVE change

Epidemiologist Tony Blakely said Sydney, NSW will never have zero Covid days

He said the state would be the first in Australia to learn to 'live with the virus'

A record 291 new daily cases were detected in New South Wales on Friday

An infectious diseases expert who predicted Sydney would go into lockdown again fears Australia's biggest city will never achieve zero cases of Covid.

Until June, every state in Australia was able to have 28 days of no community transmission through lockdowns and contact tracing.

University of Melbourne epidemiologist Professor Tony Blakely said the more contagious Delta strain meant the elimination strategy was now virtually impossible in New South Wales, which on Friday had a record 291 daily cases.

So far, 79 people have died in NSW since the pandemic began last year.

An unvaccinated women in her sixties in south-west Sydney became the 22nd person to die in the state since the Delta outbreak began in June.

The virus has also spread to the regions, with eight council areas in Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens on Thursday plunged into a one-week lockdown.

'For New South Wales, the chance of them achieving zero transmission now I think is very small,' Professor Blakely told Nine's Today show on Friday.
