Snowden joins battle against iPhone photo-scanning plan as Apple insults privacy activists as ‘screeching voices of the minority’

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has endorsed a petition against Apple’s plan to scan every iPhone user’s photos, calling it an assault on privacy. The company insisted its intention is only to root out child sexual abuse.

The letter, published on the platform Github on Friday is signed by security and privacy experts, cryptographers, researchers, academics, legal experts and ordinary consumers, united in condemnation of Apple’s “privacy-invasive content scanning technology.”

While acknowledging that efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse are “almost unquestionably well-intentioned,” the signers say that Apple’s proposal to constantly monitor and scan everyone’s photos – and alert authorities if its AI-driven algorithm tags them as criminal – “introduces a backdoor that threatens to undermine fundamental privacy protections for all users of Apple products.”

They warn that the technology has the potential to bypass any end-to-end encryption that would normally safeguard the user's privacy – something Apple has long been promoting as a major feature of its software ecosystem.

Apple’s plan to roll out the scanning program in the US was leaked on Thursday via Financial Times. It immediately raised eyebrows among cybersecurity researchers and privacy advocates – including Snowden, who became a household name in 2013 after blowing the whistle on the National Security Agency’s warrantless surveillance of Americans.

“No matter how well-intentioned [Apple] is rolling out mass surveillance to the entire world with this. Make no mistake: if they can scan for kiddie porn today, they can scan for anything tomorrow,” he tweeted on Thursday night. “They turned a trillion dollars of devices into iNarcs—without asking.

The letter he shared contains quotes from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) and the Open Privacy Research Society, as well as several prominent advocates and researchers.

They all urged Apple to halt the deployment of the proposed technology “immediately” and reaffirm their commitment to user privacy and encryption.

“We know that the days to come will be filled with the screeching voices of the minority. Our voices will be louder,” Rodriguez wrote, after saying that NCMEC is “SO PROUD” of everyone at Apple and “the incredible decisions you have made in the name of prioritizing child protection.”

Apple has previously defended the encrypted nature of its operating systems, famously going to court in 2016 to fight the FBI demand for a 'backdoor' to the iPhone of the suspect in the San Bernardino, California terrorist shooting rampage. In its legal briefs, the company said the US government was demanding something they didn’t have and would be “too dangerous” for them to create.

The FBI later managed to unlock the phone, reportedly using an Israeli spy tool, but found nothing of use. Last month, it emerged that another Israeli spy tool, Pegasus, has been used to hack tens of thousands of iPhones around the world – including journalists, dissidents and even heads of state.

Thousands protest Michigan vaccine mandates

Protesters’ message is ‘my body, my choice.’

About 3,000 people gathered at the Michigan Capitol on Friday to protest governments and employers mandating the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dressed in American flag clothing, Donald Trump flags, and back-the-blue shirts, they waved signs, saying, “my body, my choice.”

“2020: heroes. 2021: victims,” another said of frontline health care workers, many of whom must be vaccinated to continue work or quit.

“Imagine vaccines so safe you have to be threatened to take it for a pandemic so deadly, you have to be tested to know you have it,” another sign read.

About 63.9% of Michiganders ages 16 and older are vaccinated. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spent $5 million on a taxpayer-fueled lottery that failed to boost the state's rate by the nine percentage points needed to reach 70%.

Representatives from Stand Up Michigan, Let Them Play, Michigan Conservative Coalition, and several other conservative groups attended. The event featured Republican Reps. Matt Maddock of Milford, Sue Allor of Wolverine, Daire Rendon of Lake City, and Sen. Tom Barrett of Charlotte.

The four railed against what they call government overreach to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“We’ve been two years into the two weeks to flatten the curve, and enough is enough,” Maddock said.

“[Vice President] Kamala [Harris] said she didn’t trust the Trump vaccine,” Maddock said. “Are we supposed to trust theirs?”

The rally follows Michigan’s largest universities – Michigan State University Michigan, and Grand Valley State – requiringd students and staff be vaccinated, catching the criticism of Barrett.

“We have always protected informed consent as it relates to medical procedures,” he said during a speech. “Consent means the ability to decide for yourself without coercion from others, regardless of what they tell you you should or should not do.”

Barrett blamed obesity, fear and anxiety for exacerbating the COVID-19 pandemic in Michigan.

“We’re not afraid anymore,” he said. "We’re going to embrace our freedoms; we’re going to live our lives.”

Although some breakthrough COVID-19 infections occur once vaccinated, the vaccine aims to reduce symptoms, hospitalizations, and death so hospitals won’t again be overwhelmed by patients during the winter.

A recent British study found the COVID-19 vaccine sharply reduces the risk of infection and causes less severe symptoms compared to infected, non-vaccinated people.

The state says nearly 20,000 people have died of COVID-19 as a sole or contributing factor, most of whom were ages 60 and older.
