When I was in college I just regurgitated what my professors said back to them and it was easy to be an A student. Went from there to a fancy East Coast law school where I figured that wouldn’t cut it, tried to show original thinking and became a B student. I wised up after the first year and went back to my old habits, the bigwig TV law professors had even bigger egos than my college professors, and I went back to an A student. The educational system does not reward thinking for yourself as a general rule, even at (especially at) its upper eshelon.
