Residents in many Wisconsin counties might hear sonic booms during the next two weeks as military units from across the country gather at Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center for training.

Volk Field is hosting about 60 aircraft and nearly 1,000 service members from the National Guard, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy from Aug. 9 to 20.

The event is part of the training center's annual Northern Lightning Counterland training exercise, according to the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs. A variety of the world's most advanced aircraft, including aircraft like the F-35, will participate in the exercise, which simulates air battles and surface-to-air battles, according to the Department of Military Affairs. It will be necessary for some of the aircraft to conduct supersonic travel at altitudes above 30,000 feet or while climbing in both the mornings and afternoons. The result is residents in multiple counties, including Adams, Clark, Marathon, Portage and Wood counties, will see increased air traffic and possible sonic booms during daily flying hours. Other counties that could be affected include Brown, Calumet, Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Jackson, Marquette, Monroe, Outagamie, Sauk, Sheboygan, Trempealeau, Waupaca and Winnebago.
