Historically the Poodle has symbolized the upper class and those who were a breed apart
I think these are Russian prostitutes just before the Revolution and although I can't find an identical portrait, that woman in the oval seems to be the last Empress Aleksandra.
In searching for this image I realized that all over Europe they had engraved portraits of royalty in an oval frame. It's almost as if the royals were copying the Egyptian cartouche to give their subjects a kind of icon of devotion to display in their homes.
But look at the furnishings of that high-ceiling room. An imported German clock that keeps accurate time with the lead weights, gilded ornate frame around the portrait, expensive textured wallpaper, two extremely rare ostrich feathers and a mirror on the wall in perfectly flat glass with a sharp reflection indicating that it is silvered with mercury.
The prostitutes are a breed set apart, servicing the nobility because the only other way they would have such ostentatious wealth is if they were members of a boyar's household. Identifying the bust on the cupboard would help narrow this down. Is he a literary figure or someone in the arts? Or could he be a family member of the family who owned this house? So many questions.
Look at these women. They are completely at ease although they are naked and in a joyful mood. They are looked after and happy with their lot in life.
