Prisoner said he realized cellmate raped his sister, so he killed him, WA officials say

https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/nation-world/national/article253368358.html#storylink=mainstage_lead

A Washington man has been sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison after killing his cellmate, who he said raped his younger sister, according to officials and media reports.

The inmate, 26, told KHQ in an interview last year that he had been transferred to different correctional centers due to fights with officers but was transferred “out of the blue” to Airway Heights Correctional Center in Spokane County.

His cellmate was Robert Munger, 70, who was convicted of child molestation and sentenced to 43 years in prison, according to the station. The inmate said he realized that Munger was the man who raped his younger sister and requested to move cells at least twice but nobody listened.

A Washington State Patrol investigation found that “there is no evidence suggesting screening staff should have known about the conflict between (the inmate) …. and Munger,” according to The Washington Post.

WA announces vaccine mandate for state workers, health care

https://www.theolympian.com/news/state/washington/article253376473.html#storylink=mainstage

Most state workers in Washington, as well as private health care and long-term care employees, will be required to show proof of vaccination for COVID-19 by Oc. 18 or will lose their jobs, Gov. Jay Inslee announced Monday.

Weekly testing will not be an option for those who want to avoid vaccination and maintain their employment, and the only opt-out of the requirement is either a medical or religious exemption.

The order applies to about 60,000 employees of the 24 state agencies that are part of the governor's executive Cabinet, which includes the departments of corrections, social and health services, transportation and the Washington State Patrol. A fact sheet issued to employees notes that the order applies to employees who are currently working remotely, since they may need to go to a work site at some point. The governor's office said the overall number includes those who have already been vaccinated, so it was unclear how many within that group are unvaccinated.

RECURRENT NOVA RS OPHIUCHI JUST BLEW ITS TOP!

https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/recurrent-nova-rs-ophiuchi-just-blew-its-top/

A star that normally slumbers around 12th magnitude suddenly "woke up" seven magnitudes brighter this past weekend. Now you can see it with the naked eye!

Irish amateur Keith Geary was the first to report the surprise outburst of RS Ophiuchi, one of the few known recurrent novae. He captured photos of it glaring at magnitude 5.0 with his DSLR camera at 22:20 UT on August 8th and confirmed his observation in binoculars. Fellow AAVSO member Alexandre Amorim of Brazil also spotted the eruption 25 minutes earlier.

“Unprecedented’: Massive forest fire ravages Greek island

https://www.macon.com/news/business/article253364368.html#storylink=mainstage_card

Firefighters and residents battled into the night Monday for a seventh day against a massive fire on Greece's second-largest island as the nation endured what the prime minister described as “a natural disaster of unprecedented proportions.”

Smoke and ash from Evia, a rugged island of forests and coves close to the Greek mainland, blocked out the sun and turned the sky orange. The fire, which began Aug. 3, is the most severe of hundreds in the past week across Greece, gobbling up pristine pine forests as well as homes and businesses and forcing hundreds to quickly evacuate by sea to save their lives.

Greece has been baked by its worst heat wave in three decades, which sent temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) and turned its prized pine forests into bone-dry tinderboxes.

Des Moines' sewage is carrying more than its share of coronavirus, tests suggest

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/health/2021/08/09/covid-19-iowa-sewage-carries-more-coronavirus-test-delta-variant-symptoms-study/5543046001/

About 330 sewage treatment plants around the country are taking part in the federally financed program, Hutchens said. A recent lab report says Des Moines' samples have been trending higher than those from 77% of the other participating plants.

The results are standardized to account for differences in overall concentration of the sewage, the report says.

The Des Moines plant treats sewage from 17 communities. It has been sending in two samples per week to the national lab running the COVID surveillance project.

The sewage screening approach is increasingly common around the country. It's a way to check broadly for the presence of a type of virus or bacteria in a community, without having to test residents in person. It also has been used to check for such things as the presence of opioid painkillers in sewage.
