One killed, one missing after plane crashes in Marion County lake

The Marion County Sheriff's Dive Team continues to search the waters of Lake Weir in Marion County after a small plane crashed into Lake Weir. A second body has not been recovered.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the small plane crashed into the lake around 1:30 p.m. and was fully submerged.

Officials said one person was found dead.

The Federal Aviation Administration told WESH 2 in a statement that the plane was a Pitts Model 12 and there were two people aboard. No information was released on the condition of the second person.

In a statement, FAA spokesperson Maria Njoku said, "The Federal Aviation Administration will release the tail number of the aircraft after investigators verify it at the accident site. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents or incidents."

Mandy and John Hires told WESH 2 they were in the middle of the lake when they saw a yellow plane in the sky.

"It looked like a stunt plane; it was a yellow double wing airplane," the Hires said. "We thought maybe that was what [the pilot] was doing."

The couple said they watched the plane spiral into the water, but one person jumped out with a parachute that didn't open before the plane nosedived into the lake.

"[The plane] was spiraling out of control and once it hit the water, we drove as fast as we could," the couple said.

When the couple drove their boat over to the plane, they said they found an undeployed parachute and a man's body.

"I just left my office and came out to see if I can help," said John Roman, whose been living on Lake Weir for 12 years.

Roman said he jumped on his boat as soon as he heard about the crash.

"You can smell burned debris when in the location and then you saw a bunch of just airplane parts floating on the surface," Roman said. "But the FWC and Marion County Sheriff's Office wouldn't let us get too close."

The dive team will be back on the lake Tuesday morning to continue searching. A spokesperson for the NTSB told WESH as soon as the plane is fully recovered, they will start examining it to determine the cause of the crash.
