US imposes largest wave of sanctions on Lukashenko regime in Belarus, slams ‘brutal repression’

The Biden administration has slapped massive new sanctions on Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko over “transnational repression” and blatant attacks on democracy.

The United States has issued its largest ever round of sanctions on Belarus targeting President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime for its “ongoing assault” on democracy.

President Joe Biden announced the new sanctions on Monday (local time) one year after the Belarusian president, who has been dubbed “Europe’s last dictator”, claimed he won the country’s election by an 80 per cent majority.

Mr Biden said the 2020 election in Belarus saw Mr Lukashenko perpetrate election fraud “followed by a brutal campaign of repression to stifle dissent”.

The US President admonished the regime for imprisoning more than 500 activists, civil society leaders and journalists in an “illegitimate effort to hold on to power at any price”.

“It is the responsibility of all those who care about human rights, free and fair elections, and freedom of expression to stand against this oppression,” Mr Biden said.

As part of the new round of sanctions the US government will target individuals and entities in Belarus for participation in “attacks on democracy and human rights, transnational repression, and corruption”.

The sanctions will hit one of the country’s largest state-owned enterprises, Belaruskali OAO - one of the world’s largest producers of potash.

The Belarusian National Olympic Committee will also be subject to US sanctions after being accused of “facilitating money laundering, sanctions evasion, and the circumvention of visa bans”.

undefined

It comes days after the Lukashenko regime tried to detain Olympic athlete Kristina Timanovskaya who fled Belarusian persecution while in Tokyo for the Games.

The sanctions will cover more than 15 other companies linked to the Lukashenko regime including a private Belarusian bank and key sectors of the country’s economy such as the tobacco, construction, energy and transportation industries.

The Executive Order, which represents the United States’ largest sanctions program ever against Belarusian individuals and entities, will target 27 individuals who were reportedly involved in the “violent response” to protests last year as well as the forced landing of a passenger jet in May.

In May this year opposition activist Roman Protasevich was arrested at Minsk airport after Belarusian authorities forced the passenger Ryanair jet from Athens to Lithuania to land, under the guise of a fabricated bomb threat.

President Biden responded to the incident by pledging to develop “appropriate options” to hold those responsible accountable.

In a statement released by the administration on Monday, the White House said since the forced landing of the Ryanair jet, the Lukashenko regime had “further expanded its repression”.

The White House called for the Lukashenko government to permit an investigation into the flight diversion, release all political prisoners, and cease the targeting of activists against the regime.

“It must initiate a genuine and comprehensive political dialogue with democratic opposition and civil society figures that results in a free and fair presidential election under OSCE observation,” the statement said.

“Absent such steps, the U.S. government will continue to use this E.O. and other authorities to impose costs on the Lukashenka regime and its support network for enabling corruption, human rights abuses, transnational repression, and attacks against democratic freedoms and international norms.”

Canada joined its neighbour, imposing similar sanctions on Belarus in response to what it called "gross systematic violations of human rights", while the United Kingdom also slapped penalties on the Lukashenko regime.

The Belarusian President responded to claims of repression during a press conference on Monday in which he denied being a dictator and said Timanovskaya, who defected during the Olympic Games, had done so because she was "manipulated" by outside forces.

Mr Lukashenko also hit out at the British sanctions and said the UK would "choke" on the measures.

Devastating footage shows the toll wreaked by California's second largest-ever wildfire

Authorities have warned it will take weeks to contain the Dixie fire, an out-of-control blaze that has destroyed more than 600 structures across Northern California.

Residents have begun to return to Plumas County and Greenville, which has been completely devastated by the fire, which is officially the second largest fire in California history.

Firefighters are still battling the Dixie fire, 26 days after it ignited in the forest of Plumas County.

The Dixie wildfire has grown to more than 489,287 acres.

Local authorities in California said the blaze will not be contained until the end of the month.

Thousands of Californians under evacuation orders as Dixie Fire nears 500,000 acres

Over 12,000 people in eight California counties are under wildfire evacuation evacuation orders — most impacted by America's biggest blaze, the Dixie Fire.

The latest: The Dixie Fire, the second-largest in California's history, was threatening Indian Valley homes near the fire-ravaged town of Greenville Monday night. Images taken from the scene showed the blaze that's razed more than 482,000 acres creating its own weather overnight.

Threat level: Smoke from 108 large fires in the West has reduced air quality in the eastern U.S. this week, with places including New York City, Iowa and Minnesota experiencing hazy skies.

Air quality in Denver has been particularly bad, with smoke from California's 11 large fires traveling some 1,000 miles. The Colorado city has this week recorded some of the worst air quality in the world.

Firefighters across the West also now face the threat of another extreme heat wave this week.

Context: A sweeping new report from the UN's IPCC concludes: "Human influence on the climate system is now an established fact."

For the record: The Dixie Fire has destroyed 873 buildings since igniting on July 14 and was 22% contained. Cal Fire doesn't expect containment until Aug. 30.

Heavy smoke from the blaze abated earlier Monday, enabling aircraft to help join firefighting efforts, AP notes. By Monday night, the wildfire was raging along the Moonlight fire burn scar.

Plumas County Sheriff's Office officials said at a Monday evening briefing that four people listed as unaccounted for had been found.

Trump's Call for Maricopa County to Turn Over Election Routers Made Into Catchy Rap Video

Some creative folks put together a rap video of former President Donald Trump calling out Maricopa County, Arizona, officials for not turning over the routers used in the November general election in defiance of state Senate subpoenas.

The video published Friday samples from Trump’s July 24 speech at the “Rally to Protect Our Elections” hosted by Turning Point Action in Phoenix.

“DJT’s Router Remix Ft. Lil’ KC” by The Remix Bros begins with Trump saying, “If I lost the election, I’m OK with it.” Then, he launches into the refrain, “The county has refused to produce the network routers. We want the routers, Sonny.”

Sonny refers to Republican state Sen. Sonny Borrelli, the Senate majority whip, who has been a strong supporter of the audit of the November election in Maricopa County. The county encompasses the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Other people Trump mentions in the video are state Sen. Wendy Rogers and Arizona Republican Party chairman Kelli Ward, who are also strongly behind the audit.

“Why are these commissioners fighting not to give the routers? How simple could it be? That will tell the truth. What are they trying to hide?” the 45 president later says.

“Knowing what happened in the election is a good thing, not a bad thing,” he adds.

Also making visual appearances throughout is Pastor Kenneth Copeland, whose Victory Channel news and commentary programs, like “Flashpoint,” have been closely following the Maricopa County audit.

Last week, Borrelli filed what’s known as a 1487 request with the Arizona attorney general’s office calling for an investigation into the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for their refusal to comply with a July 26 subpoena issued by Arizona Senate President Karen Fann and Senate Judiciary Chair Warren Petersen.

Among other items, the Senate subpoena sought access to the routers used during the November general election and the passwords for the Dominion Voting Systems ballot tabulation devices.

Access to the routers and tabulation device passwords were both listed in the original subpoena issued in December and reissued in January, but Maricopa County and Dominion have not complied.

The Arizona attorney general’s office sent a letter Friday to the county announcing it would be investigating the refusal to turn over the subpoenaed items and set an Aug. 20 deadline for a response.

Auditor Ben Cotton, the founder of CyFIR LLC, testified at a July 15 state Senate hearing overseen by Fann and Peterson he needs access to routers and the splunk logs to do his work.

Cotton emphasized to the senators that access to the routers is the most vital thing he needs to complete the audit.

The splunk logs show the activity through the routers and would be a means to determine if anything abnormal happened regarding the vote tabulators and other equipment on or around Election Day.

Maricopa County stated in May it would not be turning over or providing access to the routers out of concern for compromising information related to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office or other personal data of Maricopa County residents.

Cotton told Fann and Petersen at the time, “That data should not exist on that router, period. So to state that it could be compromised would be an inaccurate statement or an inaccurate portrayal of what the data is on the router.”

He addressed the issue again at the July 15 hearing, explaining that routers are like mail carriers delivering packets of information to addresses, but do not access what is inside.

“What you don’t have is the actual content or the letter that’s contained in the envelope within the router itself,” Cotton said.

Maricopa County communications director Fields Moseley wrote in an email last month to The Patriot Project the Senate auditors do not need access to the routers, citing audits of the Dominion voting equipment the County commissioned earlier this year.

“The County has provided all the items necessary to audit the 2020 General Election,” Moseley added. “If they are trying to prove or disprove that tabulation equipment was connected to the internet, they could review the certified auditors report that show Maricopa County’s tabulation equipment was never connected to the internet.”

President Joe Biden carried Arizona by just 0.3 percentage points, or approximately 10,500 votes, the closest of any of the swing states that went for the Democrat.
