Those cab over Ford vans from the 60s had the shift linkage behind the grill. A long drive in a snowstorm would freeze the shifter. An advantage to the design was the engine was inside between the seats. It was an alternative heat source and you could do a tuneup in a rainstorm and not get wet. You could adjust the points from the driver's seat.
