Oklahoma School Board Member Says Students Could ‘Commit Murder’ By Not Wearing Masks

An Oklahoma school board member is under fire for claiming that students could “commit murder” by not wearing masks when they return in the fall.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has prohibited school districts from requiring masks.

Norman Public Schools board member Linda Sexton made the controversial comments during a meeting on Monday night.

“It’s just not OK for kids to commit murder by coming to school without a mask,” Sexton said, according to a report from Fox News.

“And when it comes down to it, it’s possible. They will cause a death of another child because they come to school without a mask. That’s not OK.”

Sexton’s comments can be seen around the 1:35:00-1:37:00 mark in a video posted by the school district.

“I would like to try to find a way to stand up as a district,” Sexton said, “and get our surrounding superintendents to stand up with us, and protect our little kids. It’s insane to send 5- and 6- and 7- and 8- – all the way up through 11-year-olds – that don’t have a choice about vaccine.”

The report says that “Sexton called on her district and others to stand up against Gov. Kevin Stitt, who is reportedly refusing to allow mask mandates for schoolchildren. In May, he passed a law prohibiting school districts from imposing mandates unless the governor has at least declared a state of emergency that’s in effect for their area.”

The governor said last month that there is nothing prohibiting parents from sending their children to school in masks if they feel that is best for their family.

“This is about personal responsibility, this is about freedoms,” he said.

CDC Warns of Bacterial Disease That’s Caused 2 Deaths in U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed a new fatal case of the rare disease melioidosis in Georgia that is linked to three previous cases in different states. The cases have included adults and children. Two of the four patients had no known risk factors for melioidosis; two died.

Whole genome sequencing at CDC shows the bacterial strains that sickened the patients – one each in Georgia, Kansas, Texas and Minnesota – closely match each other, suggesting there is a common source for these cases. They appear most closely related to strains found in Asia, particularly South Asia, even though none of the patients had traveled internationally.

CDC has collected and tested more than 100 samples from products, soil, and water in and around the patients’ homes. No samples have yet been positive for the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei, which causes melioidosis. Currently, CDC believes the most likely cause is an imported product (such as a food or drink, personal care or cleaning products or medicine) or an ingredient in one of those types of products. The bacteria normally lives in moist soil and water. However, in rare cases, it has also been found to contaminate wet or moist products in the areas where the bacteria are common.

Identifying a single source of infection may be difficult because:

The patients are spread apart by geography and time their illness began.

Each could have been exposed to potentially hundreds of products before they became ill.

Unlike the germs that cause most foodborne outbreaks, the bacteria responsible for melioidosis can take two to three weeks to make someone sick. This expands the window of time that investigators need to explore and means people may be less likely to remember everything they were exposed to before becoming ill.

CDC is asking clinicians to watch for any acute bacterial infection that doesn’t respond to normal antibiotics and consider melioidosis – regardless of whether the patient traveled outside the United States. CDC also urges clinicians not to rule out melioidosis as a possible diagnosis in children and those who were previously healthy and without known risk factors for melioidosis.

Although healthy people may get melioidosis, underlying medical conditions may increase the risk of disease. The major risk factors are diabetes, liver or kidney disease, chronic lung disease, cancer or another condition that weakens the immune system. Most children who get melioidosis do not have risk factors. People experiencing cough, chest pain, high fever, headache or unexplained weight loss should see their doctor.

Family Court Corruption Scandal Explodes in Hollywood

The issue of family court corruption is finally getting the attention it deserves thanks to some high-profile celebrities who have been speaking out about the outrageous violations of civil rights and due process that happened to them in family courts. The most recent is Southern Charm’s Kathryn Dennis who says her parental rights have been stripped in favor of a known abuser, ex-boyfriend Thomas Ravenel. Dennis posted on Instagram a familiar sentiment among parents destroyed by family courts.

It can be exhausting to live two lives: one for your children and for the world (everything is fine) and the other, where you are beaten down by the family court system.⁣ We see you and we stand with you. You are not alone.⁣

Ravenel is a known convicted criminal, according to Post and Currier.

Ravenel served as state treasurer in 2007 but resigned when he was indicted on a federal charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine. He was sentenced to 10 months behind bars in that case.

He also was arrested and pled guilty to assaulting his nanny.

Thomas Ravenel, the former state treasurer and “Southern Charm” reality TV star, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a lesser charge in connection with an attack on his former nanny, and will donate thousands to support other victims.

While Dennis has had her own problems with substance abuse, she sought treatment and has not been arrested or convicted of any violent crimes, unlike Ravenel. Yet the court recently stripped Dennis of her parental rights and she is only allowed to see her children on supervised visitation. Ravenel has been given full custody of the couple’s children and permission to move them over 100 miles away from their mother.

The case is under seal and Ravenel’s lawyer says the details of why the judge did this are a secret. The secrecy of family courts is one of the major stumbling blocks to cleaning up corruption. If the press cannot access the cases, court insiders and corrupt judges can do whatever they want. And a regular family without access to Hollywood money cannot file appeals because they are cost-prohibitive.

Due to the sensitive nature of the issues involved, all documents in this case have been sealed, meaning the public cannot access them, and neither Mr. Ravenel, Ms. Dennis, nor their respective attorneys are permitted to release them to third parties.

Angelina Jolie also went public recently, accusing the family court in her case of being in cahoots with Brad Pitt’s attorneys and refusing to hear her evidence during her divorce case. An appeals court agreed with her. The Guardian reported:

A California appeals court has disqualified a private judge being used by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in their divorce case, handing Jolie a major victory.

On Friday, the second district court of appeal agreed with Jolie that Judge John W Ouderkirk did not sufficiently disclose business relationships with Pitt’s attorneys.

“Judge Ouderkirk’s ethical breach, considered together with the information disclosed concerning his recent professional relationships with Pitt’s counsel, might cause an objective person, aware of all the facts, reasonably to entertain a doubt as to the judge’s ability to be impartial. Disqualification is required,” the court ruled.

Supreme Court Fines BJP, Other Parties For Not Complying With Order on Criminal Candidates

There are numerous parliamentarians in India with criminal records. The BJP’s Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, accused of the 2008 Malegaon blast, Congress's Karti P. Chidambaram, charged for corruption and murder framed the Samajwadi Party's Afzal Ansari are just a few names.

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday has fined nine political parties, including the federal ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for not complying with February 2020 directions, and has asked the Election Commission of India to make criminal records of the electoral candidates public.

In February 2020, the court ordered that details of criminal records of the poll candidates shall be published within 48 hours of the selection of the candidate. However, no political party has followed the instructions.

"All these appeals have fallen on deaf ears [by not following February 2020 order]. The political parties refuse to wake up from deep slumber," a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana said in its order.

The court also warned the parties be cautious about declaring candidates' criminal records in the future to ensure all information related to the candidates is on their website.

So far, no political parties have commented on the Supreme Court order.

Data suggests that the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has the most number of legislators (current and former) with criminal records.

"If we talk about current lawmakers of Uttar Pradesh, about 36 percent of them (143) have declared criminal cases, including rape and murder. But, these affidavits are not available to the public. Hence, nobody cares," Sanjay Kala, an election researcher with an international polling agency, C-voter, told Sputnik.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in early 2022 along with four other Indian states - Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa.

The Supreme Court also asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to create a mobile app that has the information for voters for easy access.

"It's too early to understand how this data will impact the voters, but I guess this will impact more on youths and urban voters compared to rural voters," Kala added.

In the recently-held election in four states and one Union Territory, over half of the newly-elected lawmakers of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry declared criminal cases against themselves in their election affidavits, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said in a report.

The Court also ordered that no prosecution against lawmakers shall be withdrawn without the permission of the state high courts which are monitoring the progress of cases pending against such elected lawmakers.

National Party MP George Christensen condemned for saying 'masks do not work'

Labor and the Coalition have united in condemning rogue National Party MP George Christensen for claiming lockdowns and masks "don't work".

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese called the motion to condemn the Dawson MP, describing his views as "dangerous" and "insulting" to health professionals.

"The fact is when it comes to the rollout of the vaccine, our scientists have done a fabulous job," Mr Albanese said.

In his speech shortly before question time, Mr Christensen demanded an "end to the madness" of COVID lockdowns.

"It's time we stopped spreading fear and acknowledge some facts," he said.

"Masks do not work. Fact, it has been proven masks make no significant difference in stopping the spread of COVID-19, lockdowns don't work.

"Lockdowns don't destroy the virus, but they do destroy people's livelihoods and people's lives."

Labor MP Mike Freelander also slammed the comments.

"The Prime Minister was right, we have fantastic medical professionals, epidemiology, vaccines and we are very grateful to have them," he said.

"When I see people on any side of politics, doing active harm to our response to this crisis, this health crisis, it just makes me angry.

"They should not be ignored, they should be called out on every occasion because what they are doing is disgraceful.

"I think any sensible person would understand that the time has to come when they should be called out.

"To call this pandemic, this virus, "the flu", surely that is beyond any reason, beyond any acceptability."

Mr Christensen has also been encouraging Queensland voters to join him at freedom rallies, recently attending one in Mackay.

New “Glowworm attack” recovers audio from devices’ power LEDs

A new class of passive TEMPEST attack converts LED output into intelligible audio.

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have demonstrated a novel way to spy on electronic conversations. A new paper released today outlines a novel passive form of the TEMPEST attack called Glowworm, which converts minute fluctuations in the intensity of power LEDs on speakers and USB hubs back into the audio signals that caused those fluctuations.

The Cyber@BGU team—consisting of Ben Nassi, Yaron Pirutin, Tomer Gator, Boris Zadov, and Professor Yuval Elovici—analyzed a broad array of widely used consumer devices including smart speakers, simple PC speakers, and USB hubs. The team found that the devices' power indicator LEDs were generally influenced perceptibly by audio signals fed through the attached speakers.

Although the fluctuations in LED signal strength generally aren't perceptible to the naked eye, they're strong enough to be read with a photodiode coupled to a simple optical telescope. The slight flickering of power LED output due to changes in voltage as the speakers consume electrical current are converted into an electrical signal by the photodiode; the electrical signal can then be run through a simple Analog/Digital Converter (ADC) and played back directly.

With sufficient knowledge of electronics, the idea that a device's supposedly solidly lit LEDs will "leak" information about what it's doing is straightforward. But to the best of our knowledge, the Cyber@BGU team is the first to both publish the idea and prove that it works empirically.

The strongest features of the Glowworm attack are its novelty and its passivity. Since the approach requires absolutely no active signaling, it would be immune to any sort of electronic countermeasure sweep. And for the moment, a potential target seems unlikely to either expect or deliberately defend against Glowworm—although that might change once the team's paper is presented later this year at the CCS 21 security conference.

The attack's complete passivity distinguishes it from similar approaches—a laser microphone can pick up audio from the vibrations on a window pane. But defenders can potentially spot the attack using smoke or vapor—particularly if they know the likely frequency ranges an attacker might use.

Glowworm requires no unexpected signal leakage or intrusion even while actively in use, unlike "The Thing." The Thing was a Soviet gift to the US Ambassador in Moscow, which both required "illumination" and broadcast a clear signal while illuminated. It was a carved wooden copy of the US Great Seal, and it contained a resonator that, if lit up with a radio signal at a certain frequency ("illuminating" it), would then broadcast a clear audio signal via radio. The actual device was completely passive; it worked a lot like modern RFID chips (the things that squawk when you leave the electronics store with purchases the clerk forgot to mark as purchased).

Holy coming out, Batman: Robin is bisexual, new comic confirms

Holy coming out, Batman!

In the latest installment of “Batman: Urban Legends,” the DC comic book character Tim Drake — a k a the Caped Crusader’s sidekick Robin — accepts an invitation to go on a date with a man named Bernard Dowd — thereby confirming Robin’s LGBTQ status, TMZ has reported.

Robin’s bisexual narrative unfolds in what one fan calls a “lightbulb moment” as he and Bernard find themselves in a streetside brawl. After the hero ultimately rescues Bernard, Robin later pays him a visit at his apartment.

As Drake, the character can be seen psyching himself up for greeting Bernard: “It’s OK, Tim. You got this.”

At Bernard’s door, Drake stammers, “I’m really glad you got home okay. I was relieved. And I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, about that night. And I — I don’t know what it meant to me. Not yet. But I’d like to figure it out.”

Tim Drake finally coming out is so inspiring, DC never wanted a queer Robin but after years and years of campaigning from writers and fans it finally happened

A big thank you to Meghan Fitzmartin, Belén Ortega and Alejandro Sánchez for making this moment so beautiful ❤️ pic.twitter.com/xb5YugEYd9

— Neb | 🏳️‍🌈 (@NebsGoodTakes) August 10, 2021

Bernard responds, “I was hoping you would. Tim Drake … do you want to go on a date with me?”

“Yeah, I think I want that,” Robin answers — thus concluding the episode until the next, coming in December.

Fans have long speculated that Robin may be queer, though he has dated women in previous iterations. Said one such reader, “Crazy thing, I saw Tim DRAKE coming out, years ago.. congrats to DC for making it a reality.”

Comics have been increasingly representative of the LGBTQ community as of late. In March, Marvel unveiled they’re first gay Captain America character — a queer youth advocate named Aaron Fischer — to be included in the upcoming “United States of Captain America” comic book miniseries.

“Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders, and everyday folks pushing for a better life,” creator Aaron Trujillo told Entertainment Weekly at the time of that announcement.

“He stands for the oppressed, and the forgotten,” Trujillo added. “I hope his debut story resonates with readers, and helps inspire the next generation of heroes.”

Explosion At South Africa’s Largest Power Plant One Week After It Began Operation

On August 8th, an explosion took place in South Africa’s brand-new and largest coal-fired power plant.

It was forced to stop operation just a week after it initially began operating.

The state-owned power utility Eskom announced that an explosion occurred at the Medupi Power Station late in the evening for reasons that are still unknown.

Although there were reportedly no injuries, a total of seven employees had to be treated for shock.

“No injuries have been reported, and all employees and contractors have been accounted for. Emergency services attended to seven colleagues requiring treatment for shock,” Eskom said.

“Eskom will continue to provide support to the employees who might have been affected by the incident through its Employee Assistance Programme,” it said.

“Unit 4 was on a short-term outage (since August 6) when the incident occurred, and all work on the unit was suspended with immediate effect. This included the suspension of all permits to work on the plant until further notice.”

The power plant came online just one week ago, some 14 years after construction began, the delay due to multiple cost and deadline overruns.

“This explosion has resulted in extensive damage to the generator,” Eskom said.

“The incident occurred during the activity to displace hydrogen with carbon dioxide and air respectively, for the purposes of finding an external leak. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained by personnel who were on site during the unfortunate incidents.”

Eskom said that following a preliminary investigation, it appeared that while the activity was being performed, air was introduced into the generator when hydrogen was still present.

The power utility said the hydrogen was still present in sufficient quantities to create an explosive mixture, which ignited and resulted in the explosion.

“It also appears that there was a deviation from the procedure for carrying out this activity,” Eskom said.

“As such, Eskom has undertaken to place those employees who were responsible to manage and execute this work under precautionary suspension pending the conclusion of the major event investigation.”

Eskom said investigations were under way into the cause of the incident and to what extent it would affect the national electricity grid.

Medupi, which can generate up to 4,764 megawatts of electricity, is one of the world’s largest coal-fired power plants and cost 122 billion rand ($8.3 billion).

The plant is expected to be in service for 50 years.

Despite global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and invest in renewable energy sources, coal-rich South Africa continues to rely on the fossil fuel, which supplies 75% of the country’s energy supply.
