Andy Biggs Files Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) has filed articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for presiding “over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement” as the head of the agency.

On Tuesday, Biggs filed the articles of impeachment, accusing Mayorkas of being “a threat to the sovereignty and security of our nation” by putting the United States “more in danger today than when he began serving as Secretary” in a statement.

In article one of the impeachment, Biggs alleges that Mayorkas is violating his oath by “failing to maintain operational control of the border and releasing hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens into the interior of the United States.”

“Secretary Mayorkas has willfully refused to maintain operational control of the border as required by the Secure Fence Act of 2006,” Biggs continues in article one:

Secretary Mayorkas has willfully violated the Immigration and Nationality Act by releasing illegal aliens into the interior of the United States despite the plain language of the Act, which requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to detain inadmissible aliens arriving into the United States or aliens who are present in the United States without inspection while such aliens are processed under expedited removal or placed in removal proceedings. The Secretary of Homeland Security does not have the option of simply releasing those aliens into the interior of the United States. [Emphasis added]

Secretary Mayorkas reinstituted the catch and release policies of the Obama administration and has even released inadmissible aliens into the interior of the United States without issuing the aliens notices to appear for immigration proceedings. He is relying on the aliens to report on their own volition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices to be placed into removal proceedings, a practice that violates the law and defies logic and common sense. Department of Homeland Security data show that over 80 percent of these released illegal aliens are failing to report to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office. [Emphasis added]

On May 13, 2021, Secretary Mayorkas admitted during testimony before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs that U.S. Customs and Border Protection was releasing inadmissible aliens, whom the Department of Homeland Security is required to detain, into the interior of the United States. This was an admission that under his direction, the Department of Homeland Security is violating the law. [Emphasis added]

In article two of the impeachment, Biggs writes that Mayorkas has “placed departmental personnel and American citizens at risk of exposure to and contracting COVID-19, by refusing to take necessary steps to prevent potentially contagious illegal aliens from entering the United States.”

“Instead of detaining aliens as required by law, under Secretary Mayorkas’s direction, the Department of Homeland Security has released and transported hundreds of thousands of aliens into the interior of the United States without properly screening the aliens for COVID-19 to ensure that the aliens would not spread COVID-19,” Biggs writes:

In many other cases, aliens known by the Department of Homeland Security to have COVID-19 were released into the interior of the United States. These actions have subjected the American people to unnecessary and avoidable risks and have strained border communities’ limited health services and resources. [Emphasis added]

Track star Cameron Burrell, Carl Lewis’ godson, tragically dead at 26

Cameron Burrell, a former national champion 100-meter sprinter at University of Houston and the son of Olympic gold medal-winning parents, has died. He was 26.

No cause of death has been announced.

After claiming a state title at Ridge Point High School, Burrell won the NCAA individual national championship in the 100-meter dash in 2018, something his father Leroy Burrell did 28 years prior.

In that same season, the Atlanta native ran the anchor leg for the Cougars in their championship 4×100-meter relay. The team defended its NCAA national championship in that event.

Burrell — the 121st man to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m sprint — turned pro after his collegiate career. In May, he was pictured on the cover of Red Bull’s magazine Red Bulletin. Burrell shared the cover image on Instagram with the caption, “If you ain’t seen me lately just know I’ve been working. Now it’s time to show the world my gift.”

No One Enjoys ‘Fairer Hearing,’ Lawyer for Canadian Govt Says of Meng Wanzhou’s Extradition

No one had a “fairer hearing” than Meng Wanzhou, a lawyer for the Canadian attorney general told the court while arguing against a stay of proceedings, adding that no misconduct was involved in the Huawei executive’s extradition case.

Robert Frater told the British Columbia Supreme Court on Tuesday that no misconduct from either the United States or the Canadian border officials had occurred when they were handling the case.

Meng, the chief financial officer for China’s telecom giant Huawei Technologies, and daughter of the company’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, was arrested by the Canadian police on a U.S. warrant in December 2018, at the Vancouver airport while en route to Mexico.

Meng is wanted in the United States on charges of bank fraud, as she allegedly lied to multiple financial institutions about Huawei’s business dealings with Iran, leading them to violate U.S. sanctions against the Middle East country. Meng and Huawei have both denied these charges.

Defence lawyers have argued that Meng’s case should be tossed out as a remedy to the series of abuses she has suffered—which ranged from an alleged abuse of process by Canadian police and border officers, to the U.S. government’s alleged withholding of crucial details from Canada in an attempt to mislead the court.

Shortly after her arrest, Meng was released on bail and put under house arrest in one of her multimillion-dollar mansions in Vancouver. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in January, Immigration Canada granted Meng’s husband, Liu Xiaozong, and their two children travel exemptions to visit her in Vancouver.

Meng’s arrest soured the bilateral relationship between Canada and China, and led to serious repercussions for several Canadian citizens in China in a series of retaliatory arrests and trials that are widely seen as Beijing’s “hostage-diplomacy.”

On Monday, the Higher People’s Court of Liaoning Province in northeastern China rejected a death-sentence appeal by Robert Schellenberg, a Canadian convicted of drug offenses.

In November 2018, Schellenberg was given a 15-year person term for drug smuggling, but his sentence was abruptly increased to a death sentence a month after Meng’s arrest.

China stops issuing new passports, imposes exit and entry controls in major crackdown on freedom of movement

China has stopped issuing passports to its citizens and has imposed exit and entry controls on its nearly 1.4 billion population. The decision comes amid a recent surge in the Delta variant of COVID-19, but many commentators argue the move is instead the Chinese Communist Party using the pandemic as a pretext to curb freedom of movement.

Speaking to Radio Free Asia, Chinese officials living in mainland China say that authorities have gradually stopped issuing new passports and exit visas.

The Chinese Entry and Exit Bureau confirmed publicly that the rules are in place, saying exit permits will only be issued for “essential” travel.

Speaking in a news conference on July 30, spokesman Chen Jei said, “We will be implementing a strict approvals system with no permits for non-emergency or non-essential trips out of China, to ensure public safety during the pandemic.”

Many Chinese nationals living in the U.S. have been stranded in China after planning to renew their passports while visiting home, U.S.-based businessman Zhang Shengqi told Radio Free Asia.

“My friend … found he couldn’t get [a passport] after he got back, and his wife [in the U.S.] just gave birth to a child,” Zhang said.

“My friend even has contacts in the area, but even they can’t get it done for him; nobody is issuing them, so he is stuck there and can’t get out,” he said. “It’s pretty inhumane when families can’t be together.”

Current affairs commentator Fang Yuan claims the pandemic is not the main reason for the decision to increase restrictions, saying, "I think we can look at these new entry and exit restrictions in the context of the crackdown on Chinese companies listing in the U.S.," Fang said. "These choices are being made in line with the [Sino-U.S.] trade war."

"These actions may cause some harm to [Chinese interests], but they are also hurting the other side," he said.

U.S.-based legal scholar Teng Biao said Chinese nationals should be granted the freedom to enter and leave China at will.

"I think the Chinese Entry-Exit Bureau's actions are in violation of laws protecting the basic rights of citizens," Teng told RFA. "The pandemic is being used as a pretext."

"They want to … clamp down on the movement of their citizens and prevent Western ideological imports from influencing them," he said.
