Long post. Do not look for typos. Do not look for wording, do not over-interpret, see the post in the spirit it is meant.
Imagine you are a boss of a small village.
For the sake of the argument and for reasons of simplification just imagine this village without anything surrounding it.
Imagine you care for the people living there and you care for the village itself.
Imagine you want the village and everybody living in it to prosper and to have a good life.
Imagine you set up rules for living together that enable and ensure that everybody is treating each other well.
Imagine how great such a village can be and, over time, what great achivements and knowledge it can develop.
Imagine how easy life would become and - according to Maslow - once certain needs are taken care of how happy and fulfilled life can be.
(Just one example for "do not over-interpret": Of course there are prople who do not follow Maslow´s hierarchy of needs, e.g. monks, just to name one group.)
Now imagine this village and imagine you are a boss that does not care about the village and the people living in it but cares for himself only.
Obviously you would not say so, but would claim to care for everybody anyway.
You would set up rules that would look like they were made to help the village and its people, but you would make sure those rules would help yourself and the things you want.
You would want to profit from every business and every labor in this village and get a share of everything.
But because you would not want to store tons of grain you get from the farmers or 100 loafs of bread from the baker or herd 100 cows, pigs, sheep and chicken and by that actually do work yourself, you come up with the idea of currency. (Again: Do not overinterpret! Just read and think about it!)
You would collect taxes for the "great luck" of being able to live and work in this village, the village you consider your village.
Of course you would not say that it´s your goal to profit from others and you would claim that everything you get from others is needed to keep the village running.
You would give back a certain amount to the village and e.g. develop the infrastructure.
You would make your "job" (profiting of others) look hard and you would carefully try to spread the story that nobody else could do such an amazing job.
You would try to make your self look like a saint, maybe with the help of the local doctor or the local scientist or other people that you consider trusted by others in the village.
You would put pressure on the ones who still doubt you and just won´t understand how good and great you are.
You would come up with the idea to teach new born members of the village how great you are and how helpful your rules are and that without you or your rules the village life would not be nearly as good as it is.
Maybe you would first do that on Sunday campfire evenings when storys are told. Later you would come up with an institution that ensures people are being formed the way you want them to be formed.
You would want there to be a sherrif and a judge to make sure your rules are being followed.
Of course you would make sure that there is certain flexibility in applying those rules, making sure they are acting just in the way you want them to act.
Imagine such a village.
