oom is out-of-memory. When a process spawns a bunch of child processes, it may run out of memory. Instead of crashing the whole system, the out-of-memory killer stops (kills) the child processes that are marked in various ways (like paused for a certain amount of time, too much memory or other resource utilization, etc.)
