Just a Drill: There is no active shooter at Syracuse University dorm

A police drill at a Syracuse University dormitory caused panic Wednesday morning when people listening to scanners heard about deaths and injuries.

Syracuse police confirmed to CNY Central this was just a training exercise and there was no active shooter or threat. They were doing a drill at Lawrinson Hall, which is a dorm near the Dome.

However, warnings were issued by the 911 center through the police scanner that the communications are a drill only, said Syracuse Police.

Syracuse Police said that the training communications may have inadvertently been heard over scanner traffic, but should be disregarded as it was only training and there was no actual threat.

It's unclear why police did not send out a warning or why this communication went over public scanners instead of a secure channel.
