Ghislaine Maxwell Loses Bid to Dismiss Sex Trafficking Charge

Ghislaine Maxwell, the former associate of Jeffrey Epstein, must face criminal charges that she helped the disgraced financier traffic girls for sex.

U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan on Friday denied Maxwell’s request that she throw out the charges against her, including a sex trafficking count and one of sex trafficking conspiracy. Nathan had rejected Maxwell’s request to dismiss an earlier version of the indictment that didn’t include those charges.

Nathan also denied Maxwell’s requests for additional information about the charges against her and to get an early look at statements made by an accuser she’s charged with trafficking.

The case is U.S. v. Maxwell, 20-cr-330, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan.).

WHO scientist wants closer look at Wuhan lab that moved days before COVID-19 outbreak

A Wuhan lab that was quietly moved by Chinese officials in December 2019 — drawing scrutiny from a World Health Organization scientist — operated under a mild safety level protocol where workers weren’t necessarily required to wear masks, officials said in reports.

At least one employee of the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention facility — different than the city’s much-discussed Wuhan Institute of Virology — tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies due to “a family cluster transmission,” though it’s unclear when the tests were conducted, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a World Health Organization report.

The lab, where Chinese scientists research mild human diseases with bats, was moved near the seafood market where the first COVID-19 cases were found just days before the outbreak, WHO investigators said.

Classified with a “Biosafety Level of 2,” the lab also has ventilation controls that aren’t as strict as other more secure facilities, according to the report.

COVID-19 lab leak theory a ‘probable hypothesis,’ WHO scientist says in stunning reversal

The first person infected with COVID-19 could have caught the virus from a bat while working at the controversial Wuhan virology lab — but Chinese officials pressured the World Health Organization to drop the theory during a probe into the pandemic’s origins, according to an astonishing admission from a WHO scientist.

In the stunning reversal, Dr. Peter Ben Embarek, who initially dismissed the lab leak theory as “extremely unlikely,” said he now considers the possibility a “probable hypothesis,” according to the Washington Post, which cites a documentary airing on Danish television channel TV2.

“An employee who was infected in the field by taking samples falls under one of the probable hypotheses,” Ben Embarek told the interviewers.

“This is where the virus jumps directly from a bat to a human. In that case, it would then be a laboratory worker instead of a random villager or other person who has regular contact with bats,” he explained.

“So it is actually in the probable category,” the Danish scientist reiterated.

Ben Embarek oversaw a team of international scientists on a WHO-led mission to China in January to work with local officials to uncover the origins of the deadly disease, which has killed more than 4.3 million people worldwide.

The team found no evidence a lab worker was patient zero during the joint fact-finding mission — but Chinese scientists and officials withheld information and pressured them to drop the theory, he said.

WHO scientists weren’t allowed to see proper data, and the theory wasn’t even discussed until two days before the team was scheduled to leave China, he told interviewers.

In new documentary, WHO scientist says Chinese officials pressured investigation to drop lab-leak hypothesis

The World Health Organization expert who led a controversial joint probe into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic says in a documentary airing Thursday night on Danish television that Chinese colleagues influenced the presentation of their findings.

Speaking to Danish documentarians, Peter Ben Embarek said Chinese researchers on the team had pushed back against linking the origins of the pandemic to a research laboratory in Wuhan in a report about the investigation.

“In the beginning, they didn’t want anything about the lab [in the report], because it was impossible, so there was no need to waste time on that,” Ben Embarek said during the interview. “We insisted on including it, because it was part of the whole issue about where the virus originated.”

In its report released earlier this year, the WHO-China team said it was “very unlikely” that the virus, officially named SARS-CoV-2, could have accidentally leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology or another facility in the Chinese city where infections were first found. The joint team of researchers said it would not recommend further investigation into the issue.
