Congresswoman Drafting Election Security Laws Is Invested In Chinese State-Owned Companies.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill – who spearheads House Democrat’s election reform initiatives – is invested in several companies with ties to the Chinese Communist Party and its military, The National Pulse can reveal.

The New Jersey congresswoman’s 2020 financial disclosure reveal investments in several Chinese tach firms flagged as “tools” of the Chinese Communist Party. She retains up to $50,000 in Alibaba shares and purchased up to $15,000 in Tencent shares on March 27th, 2019.

The U.S. State Department has flagged both firms as “tools” of the Chinese Communist Party that count powerful party members among their executive ranks.

Both companies have also been involved in the “research, production, and repair of weapons and equipment for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)” and have a “deep record of cooperation and collaboration” with China’s “state security bureaucracy,” former Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation Christopher Ford revealed.

The State Department has also linked Tencent and Alibaba to the regime’s build-up of “technology-facilitated surveillance and social control”:

Significantly, the modern “China Model” is built upon a foundation of technology-facilitated surveillance and social control. These techniques for ruling China have been – and continue to be – in critical ways developed, built, and maintained on behalf of the Party-State by technology firms such as Huawei, Tencent, ZTE, Alibaba, and Baidu. As these companies export their products and services to the rest of the world, the security and human rights problems associated with this “China Model” are progressively exported with them.

They “have no meaningful ability to tell the Chinese Communist Party “no” if officials decide to ask for their assistance – e.g., in the form of access to foreign technologies, access to foreign networks, useful information about foreign commercial counterparties, insight into patterns of foreign commerce, or specific information about the profiles, activity, or locations of foreign users of Chinese-hosted or -facilitated social media, computer or smartphone applications, or telecommunications,” the report adds.

Financial disclosures also reveal that Sherrill’s spouse retains up to a $50,000 investment in iShares MSCI China Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) that appear to have been purchased in 2019. Sherrill also has up $15,000 invested in the ETF, which is comprised primarily of Alibaba and Tencent shares in addition to state-owned entities such as China Construction Bank.

Sherrill introduced the Election Technology Research Act of 2019 which authorized robust evaluations and changes to U.S. election infrastructure.

update(5:40eastern): The State Department has ordered the US embassy in Kabul to begin shredding all sensitive and classified materials as the Taliban heads for the capital city:

A memo obtained by NPR lays out the emergency preparations underway by American diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul — including the destruction of sensitive documents and computers — as most of them prepare to leave the country.

…The embassy staffers were instructed to destroy important papers and desktop computers before they leave, according to the document.

It's a disastrous scene reminiscent of Tehran in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution, which saw the US embassy there attacked, resulting in fifty-two American diplomats and citizens being held hostage, kicking off the lengthy Iran hostage crisis.

Earlier in the day Friday it was widely reported that Washington has formally asked the Taliban to 'spare' the embassy from attack should Kabul fall.

Morgan Stanley: The Delta Wave Will Peak In 1-2 Weeks

In making his case for the bottom in yields and cyclical stocks, yesterday JPMorgan quant Marko Kolanovic yesterday echoed what we said earlier this week when we observed that the Delta wave may have just peaked, writing that "the US inflection is days away."

He's not the only one to piss into the Biden admin's hopes to extend the Delta crisis until the midterms, or maybe even until the next mail-in presidential election. As Morgan Stanley's resident in-house biotechnologist Matthew Harrison writes overnight, "with new cases in the US reaching ~120K/day, investor questions are centered around the timing of the new peak in cases. Based on the reproduction rate trajectory, US/UK hospitalization relationship, and previous peaks, we expect the next peak to occur in ~1-2 weeks."

As Harrison notes, the only question on investor minds is when will Delta be over?

To this his answer is that a peak would occur in late August / early September. Based on detailed data we now believe that US cases may be approaching a peak within the next 1-2 weeks (~August 15th-25th) for the following reasons:

(1) During the 5 major prior peaks in cases over the past 1+ year (Exhibit 1, blue dashed lines), the peak in reproduction rate (Rt)values

(Exhibit 1, middle panel) was consistently reached prior to the peak in new cases (Exhibit 1, top panel),and specifically ~9-21 days in advance (except from Jan 8th wherein new cases and Rt peaked on the same day). This may suggest that the next peak in cases could be predicted by the timing of the peak in Rt values and, therefore,given that the latest peak in Rt was on July 24th, the next peak in cases could be reached by ~Aug14th. Note that,unlike Rt, the doubling time (Exhibit 1, bottom panel) does not appear to be a leading factor of new cases

Huawei Accused of Spying on Pakistan & Stealing Intellectual Property

Chinese tech company Huawei, one the world's leading providers of telecom equipment, has been consistently accused of industrial espionage and technology theft by the US government, as the latter added the former to a blacklist in 2019 amid a trade war between Beijing and Washington.

California-based software company Business Efficiency Solutions LLC (BES) filed a lawsuit against Huawei on Wednesday, claiming that the Chinese tech giant stole classified data after the two companies worked together on a joint project for the Pakistani government.

Huawei has been accused of developing so-called 'backdoor' software as a means of accessing confidential information the company claims is "important to Pakistan's national security."

The “Safe City” project was launched by the Pakistani government in 2015 to renovate its police and security agencies and equip them with innovative technology, and Huawei was the general contractor. BES was invited as an exclusive subcontractor as it “had the capability, expertise, and knowledge that Huawei lacked to meet the technical and software requirements for the project.”

According to the legal complaint, Huawei gained possession of BES’ “most commercially valuable trade secrets,” specifically “proprietary, trade secret ‘low-level designs’ (‘LLDs’),” and afterward began “secretly procuring certain portions of BES’s software systems from other sources – including from vendors BES identified to Huawei.”

“After obtaining possession and access to BES’s trade secrets under the guise of contract, beginning in the fall of 2018, Huawei pursued contracts to develop other Safe City projects in Pakistan and around the world on its own – in violation of its agreement with BES and the limited license to BES’s technology provided therein,” the suit reads.

The plaintiff also noted that there have been numerous additional violations of intellectual property laws by Huawei.

The US previously accused Huawei of collaborating with the Chinese government in military and intelligence data gathering, as well as gaining access to personal user data in the systems it sells and leases worldwide.

Since May 2019, Huawei has been on a US blacklist and was prevented from accessing US production chains, technologies and software. Washington’s initiative to persuade other countries to avoid the use of Huawei 5G technology and equipment, prompted it to offer different countries its own infrastructure and tools.

The Chinese company claims the accusations are baseless, politically motivated and in violation of the so-called principles of market competition.
