Earthquake activity remains high. Another USGS designated significant quake of 6.9 (likely over a 7 if you know USGS math) just a few miles SE of the area of the previous 8.2 off of Perryville, Alaska on 7/29.
The 7.5 from the South Sandwich Islands a couple days ago has now been appended with a previously unreported 8.1 that occurred 14 seconds earlier and just SSW. Oops…we must've missed this gigantic earthquake…here, we'll slide it in overnight…no one will notice.
Of the nearly 190 or so earthquakes of over 4.5 in the past 7 days on Earth, over half 100+ have occured in the South Sandwich Islands area with almost all being in the 5 - 6 range.
Two 8+ pointers in two weeks. Multiple 7+ and concentrated 5+ activity seems to indicate that something is really applying some pressure and when it releases…who knows.
