LONDON: The Taliban are in control of Afghanistan and British and NATO forces will not be returning to fight the insurgents, Britain's defence minister said on Monday (Aug 16).

"I acknowledge that the Taliban are in control of the country," Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told Sky News. "I mean, you don't have to be a political scientist to spot that's where we're at."

Wallace said it was not yet the right time to decide on whether to recognise the Taliban as the Afghan government.

Mobile phone explodes, burns house in Scotland

A Briton experienced a terrifying moment when his mobile phone blew up in his hand before setting fire to his home.

Andrew Granger, 34, from Glasgow, explained that his new mobile phone, Samsung Galaxy A02, which he bought three weeks ago, suddenly felt it burning his hand as he returned home from being out.

He dropped the phone to the ground as it made a loud bang and noticed that the battery exploded, with flames sparking from the device.

He quickly fetched water in a bid to extinguish the blaze, but it instantly spread to the curtains, before the firefighting team puts it out.

An Afghan military jet has crashed in Uzbekistan, an Uzbek news website reported on Monday, citing sources and images shared via messaging apps.

The Afghan government collapsed on Sunday and the Taliban insurgents were poised to take over after capturing the capital Kabul.

According to the Gazeta.uz report, the jet crashed late on Sunday in Uzbekistan's southernmost Surxondaryo province adjacent to Afghanistan. It published photographs of medics attending to a man in an air force uniform.

The website also said a source told it that two Afghan military servicemen believed to have also been on the plane were hospitalised in the provincial capital, Termez.

Russia's TASS news agency cited Uzbekistan's defence ministry as saying it was studying reports about the crash. Uzbek authorities could not immediately be reached for comment, according to Reuters.

On Sunday, Uzbekistan said it had detained 84 Afghan soldiers who had crossed the border and sought medical help.

The White House released a photo on Sunday of Biden sitting in a Camp David conference room as he discussed the ongoing situation in Afghanistan virtually with others, including Vice President Kamala Harris and the CIA.

Eagle-eyed social media users, however, soon noticed that the clocks on the wall were displaying the wrong times for international cities. Specifically, London and Moscow were shown to be three hours apart, despite the time difference between the two cities currently being just two hours.

London and Moscow have been two hours apart since March and will return to being three hours apart in November.
