Opium production during the Taliban government had dropped from 3,276 tons in 2000 to 185 tons in 2001. In 2002 warlords / drug lords "gift" Afghanistan, with the kind collaboration of the US / NATO military, the monopoly worldwide: 3,400 tons (United Nations data).

Production increases year by year, reaching a peak of 7,400 tons in 2007. In 2014, the world record is firmly in the hands of the Afghan drug lords with 6,400 tons. The decline recorded in 2015 does not represent a reversal of the trend, but only a setback due to a lower productivity of the plantations (which fell from 28.7 kg per hectare in 2014 to 18.3 kg in 2015; in 2009 it was 56 kg) caused by drought and land depletion after years of continuous intensive exploitation. Furthermore, excessive production had caused prices to drop to levels no longer convenient for producers. The consequence is today a new global drug addiction epidemic that silently claims 100,000 lives every year, especially in Europe and Russia.
