On this day in 1940, the first official parachute jump was conducted by Fort Benning’s 29th Infantry Regiment Test Platoon from a Douglas B-18 over Benning’s Lawson Army Airfield.
Recognizing the bravery of all the elite paratroopers, past and present, then-President George W. Bush proclaimed August 16th as National Airborne Day in 2002.
